HTC Vive from Microsoft Store for $1299 with Free Delivery

190

A bit cheaper than last time when it went on sale in November on the Microsoft store and at least $50-$100 cheaper than retail stores. I believe the 5 free games is still available as seen here.

Remember to use a foreign transaction fee free card even though it is charged in AUD, as suggested here

Maybe someone can make the ozbargain website vr friendly…

CES next week.. i'll wait to see what happens there first…

    • We'll probably see the wireless 4K to each eye HTC Vive and other things that graphics cards cannot handle!

      • GTX 1080ti prob too…

Higher resolution displays for VR is a good thing regardless of what resolution you actually display at, as it helps with the screen door effect.

        • Yeah, I'm fairly sure just about any form of scaling up to fill a higher res screen is better than displaying at the awful native resolution those headsets currently have. They look very, very grainy.

I think game engines and drivers will get better too, as they figure out more tricks (checkerboard rendering and such) to render for VR.

        • @MrMcHairyHead: The res really isn't that bad. On paper, sure. But I completely forget about the low res after using it for a couple of minutes, and I'm a resolution nut.

That said, a higher resolution unit would of course be great.

      • HTC have said this will not debut at this CES, but they have not denied that dual 4K / 120 HZ display is coming to the Vive 2. I will wait for that, or equivalent to emerge as the fidelity will be a huge improvement over current technology and would be better even for virtual cinema and the like.

        • That's a massive improvement over the current model. This one has a screen door effect.

      • I want a holographic projection in front of your eyes.

This one from Lenovo looked interesting.

      • Hate Lenovo as a brand, but i'm guessing more of these will be announced next week.

        • +1

Probably, I am hoping this sets a standard for the next generation VR headsets (especially the price line, which makes it more affordable than the current generation models).

        • +2

Agree. I've tried the current gen VR headsets and I like them but I can't justify the purchase at the price point - even for 1st gen tech it feels far too high.

        • @Killix: Agreed with the exception of PSVR. Also appears to easily be the best designed HMD by a country mile in terms of comfort and not wearing a sweaty pancake on your face.

    does it work with eyephone?

    • Wow, tough crowd.

  • so keen for one of these bad boys- but seriously lacking in any where to set it up properly :(

    • some guy on reddit set up in yard with sensors on small stands
i played in 2.5m square but wanted a 5m square for some games
also the wires are a real pain for some games but there is a wireless attachment available
i recommend 1080 or 1080ti or sli for supersampling which greatly improves the gfx to a next gen level

Be very careful using these things (Oculus Rift and HTC Vive) if used outside. It does not take much sunlight at the right angle on the fresnel lenses to burn the LCD display.

        • Amazing I had no idea of this

      • It sounds cumbersome to set it up outside. Especially if you have to do it every time you play and pack it away afterwards.

This is something I will look to when I'm swimming in money and buy a big house where I can dedicate one room to VR.

  • How much is the PS4 VR?
    Why is this more expensive?

    • +4

I'm not even going to go on the complete massive differences between the two, google them, but even with your comparison..

      $550 psvr
      $90 camera
      $120 move controllers

$760. That's still a hefty investment for something nowhere near the resolution, doesn't track movement around the play area, etc..

      • ok thanks. I'll do some research.

      • +1

You can get a Move controller dirt cheap. 120$ isn't fair. The PSVR does track movement in the play area.

        • I got my Move controllers for $10 each.

They have a bundle that includes all of that stuff for cheaper than buying separately. In the US it's $500.

        • @lostn: Not here they don't.

      • doesn't track movement around the play area,

Honestly for me I haven't seen a compelling reason to want that. It's amazing, don't get me wrong, but in terms of a feature I'll use in games it still looks like a be amazed for 60 minutes as a I walk around something … and then what?

        • +2

After spending some decent time with a Vive, I can't imagine VR without the ability to move around the play area. It would be pretty boring and pointless.

        • @theguyrules: No matter which headset you buy, it's still non-final tech. The next revision will blow it out of the water. They will address the complaints with the current headsets.

So unless this is going to be your unit you keep for years, I don't think it's a good idea to spring for the most expensive one.

If I was doing it, I'd get the cheapest one now, which would be either Gear VR or PSVR just to get a taster. When a proper headset like Vive 2 or Rift 3 comes along and perfects the tech, that's when I invest at enthusiast level. For the time being I see all of these becoming obsolete in a year, even the most expensive one, which right now is Vive. If I bought the Vive now, I'd be kicking myself for buying it when Vive 2 releases and wish I waited for that instead. I'm expecting big improvements. Not like with smart phone tech where all you're getting that's new each year is a faster CPU. I expect functionality and convenience to improve, cut down on wires and ports needed, improved tracking, easier to set up, require less space, better screen, more comfortable fit, etc.

If I'm buying something now, it's going to be temporary and I don't need all the best stuff like room scale, because I will get that with a better revision later. For now I just want to save money. I also don't have the space for it, so being seated is the only viable experience for me right now.

        • +1

@lostn: Yeah, of course, it's like literally any first-gen tech.
This sort of stuff is driven by early adopters.
          Someones gotta buy them now.

Not saying you do, that's fine. But people have chosen to, and it's cause of them that there will be a revision 2.

        • @theguyrules: That's fair. Someone's got to buy them for there to be a revision 2. It will have to be the tech heads who are willing to pay a lot for the latest and greatest.

There's already a new strap coming for it. It gets rid of the elastic and fastens it the same way PS VR does (which most agree is the most comfortable of the 3 headsets).

Just like the Oculus Touch controllers with the two extra sensors required for full room scale was a later release. They will wish it was able to be packed in at launch, and for a future revision, I'm certain they will be included. Just means the tech is still missing some pretty essential features (room scale for Rift and proper controllers).

        • @lostn: Yeah, it's a lot to pay for "gaming" but for a hobby it could be much worse.

That strap looks really cool. I'm not surprised they imitated the PS VR system for that.

        • @theguyrules:

          Here we go..

A Look at the Wireless Future of the HTC Vive - CES 2017

HTC shores up the Vive's deficiencies by introducing a more ergonomic design, wireless VR, and a sophisticated motion-tracked ecosystem.

          http://www.gamespot.com/videos/a-look-at-the-wireless-futureā€¦

Already talking about future versions that will be improved. The biggest improvement in new tech usually comes between Gen 1 and Gen 2, so it's not a bad idea to wait a bit.

It's good to know that they consider it successful enough so far that there will be more revisions. I thought it might be priced beyond most people.

        • @lostn: More accessories

This can turn any object into a VR accessory (weapon for example).

One day this will be a very amazing and complete experience and will be affordable. At the moment it's just a good experience that's expensive.
