I've got an Annke POE NVR system with 4 x 2.5K cameras and it is brilliant. I'd suggest that the 720p is fine if you only need to identify people pretty close to the camera (no more than about 4-5m) or you are using it to simply observe an area. What willl you be connecting the cameras to?

    • Will be connected to our network ideally, through a router of sorts. Exact way I'm not sure as our IT guy will take over when he's back from holiday. This is more his forte, I'm just doing some ground work. Open to any suggestions though and thanks for weighing in!

You really should get POE (power over ethernet) cameras which only require ethernet cable to the cameras (the ethernet cable contains the power). Have a look at the links in the threads below.

  • I am looking at building a system for my home. These are 12 volt powered. I am leaning towards Power Over Ethernet cameras as i can run a single cable for the video and power to them directly from my office.

  • Guys Annke, HikVision or something else recommended for say 8 channel DVR with 4x 4mp cameras?

    Also bullet cameras or dome?

We highly recommended Annke coz Annke has AU Warehouse and Local Service and Its 8CH DVR With 4X4MP Camera made with top quality.

    • HikVision all the way based on positive feedback for them in most of the forums. Aus ones are expensive. Getting from China will be very cheap, but you cannot update firmware. Most people dont update firmware anyway.

      • Thanks Gaggy.

        Bullet or dome cameras?

        • Personal choice, but I like are turret ones for ceiling and Bullet ones are more suited for walls. Remember, red light at night for night vision attracts insects or bugs on cameras unless you go for cameras with Passive Infrared (PIR) detector.

As labour for putting cameras is much more compared to the cameras, I would stay away from these 720p analog cameras. IP cameras are quite affordable and have much better quality. You just need to run ethernet cable for them which will provide power and network for them via NVR or POE switch.

  • Hi Guys,
Can anyone recommend a poe camera that is compatible with my qnap nas surveillance station? Thanks in advance.

  • Might have to look into this brand some more.
