Points are worth on average 0.66c per point. It's rarely more than 1c, and can be as low as half a cent. It depends entirely on what you spend your points on.

    • +2

If you buy first class tickets, they're worth a LOT. If you never buy tickets (even economy), then this is a fair item to spend em on.

      • +8

You're on Ozbargain and buying "First class tickets"?

        • +3

Actually, if you buy the ticket outright with points, it becomes a very affordable matter.

        • +10

For sure. Nothing like a suite at 35000 feet, asking the flight attendant to make your bed and bring a hot choc while you go change into ya PJs and then get a good sleep before walking up and puffing out before landing.

          Bargain does mean stingy

        • @sydboy007:
          I'd expect more than that…

        • +2

          @Jamesx:

I normally recommend business class tbh, better value for points. Points spend is much lower, you get off the 14+ hour flight feeling refreshed (flat bed w/ massage, noise cancelling headphones, the wake up warm towel, shorter/no queue at the toilet), real food, better baggage allowance, etc.

        • +1

@sydboy007: PJ's? You mean strip down to your jocks surely.

        • +1

@kwchaz: depends. With Alaskaair the different for a flight TOK to USA is 60K Business and 70K first. I'd quite happily pay an extra 10K points

Similar with United. SYD - BKK in Business is 30K and F is 40K

Singapore Airlines SYD - TOK is 65K in business and 80K in F

In general I'd agree business class that provides direct access is pretty good these days, but the cost difference when using miles is not as ridiculous as when you're using $$$$

        • Convenient does cost

      • I used to calculate the trip to UK with first/business class with Qantas point.

        It require over 1m points…. lol…

Not sure will I able to save up 1m points in my life…

        • +1

That's why you do a Oneworld QF Award (effectively an around-the-world) in Business class for 280,000 QF points (plus around $1,000AUD in taxes and charges). For an approx. $12k air fare, that puts your points value (say $11k) at almost 4c per point of value.

They have a First fare too, but at 420,000 points (and a similar $1k additional) it's not as good a value as First is around a $3-4k premium over Business (for a 50% increase in points). Business is the sweet spot.

        • @drewbles:
Silly question but How do you choose one world qf over classic award?

        • +3

@Peanut money: You have to use the multi-city planner, and fly at least 3 oneworld airlines (can't all be on Qantas). The calculator will keep incrementing points and eventually fall back to 280,000.

Often requires use of other tools and phoning them and paying the assisted booking fee (unless you can convince them to waive it as some partners don't have availability online; you have a better chance if you're Platinum).

        • @drewbles: Too late now, I cash out all my 350K points last year…. :(

        • @drewbles:
          Thanks champ

        • @GundamZeta: how much did you sell them for?
          Gumtree? Or Oz bargain classifier?

        • @congngo:

I cash them to gifts cars and I used it all

  • +5

    42,580 pts or 17,032 pts + $196.72

So not bad given the lowest Oz price seems to be about $600.

As a guide 8000pts gets you a flight between SYD to MEL

    • +2

      8000 pts + taxes*

      • +1

        …of like $30

anyone serious about points does not redeem them for MEL-SYD :)

        • +3

It's worth it when it's last minute and the minimum price is $240 one way!

        • @kingmw: There's always Tiger or Jetstar ;)

        • +3

@drewbles: They can usually sense the desperation as well….

        • +1

          @kingmw:

Yes, that's exactly what I save my FF points for….. pay cash for cheap seats, and FF seats during peak times.

Hmmm very tempting, given this review and others like it putting it on similar footing to the Sony MDR1000X's

Awesome deal thanks OP just bought a pair with points.

  • Thanks OP. Got myself a pair with points that were sitting idle

  • OzBargain saves money? šŸ˜€
Good deal… Tempted to use a few points.

  • Price in title please.

  • in my rough calc, it works out to be about $275 worth of points…man i'm so so tempted…

  • This has been on for a few weeks now, placed my order before Christmas, hopefully delivery next week. I have the Bose QC 35 which I'm very satisfied with but the Sennheiser supports Blutooth aptX codec for better audio quality which my LG V20 supports.

  • +6

How I value points is the gift card redemption rates, using wish card for example 16,600 points or so is a $100 giftcard which is practically cash. So using that system it's worth ~$256 which I'm sure is cheaper that what you can buy anywhere else

    • +2

I usually go by the largest DJs gift card which tends to be the cheapest gift card but it keeps on getting more points expensive every time I check…anyways going by this it would currently set it at $263ish … ah same same really :)

  • +3

thanks op. just got one. i hope it is better than my 48000+ points for a high chair decision which made two years ago.

Momentum 2.0 wireless is on sale (50% off) as well.
    Which is better?

These were $400 in the past, same price as the Momentum 2.0
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/278114

    • Momentum has better audio quality, but noise cancelling isn't in the same league as PXC550, noise is muffled but still quite audible when compare to PXC550. And PXC550 is slightly better for long period usage comfort. So all depends on which you values more.

    • picked up the momentum 2.0 wireless :)

      • +1

        Thats wired and no ANC.
It is also On-ear which is cheaper.

The Over ears wired are also 50% off in Qantas store at 30K points.

The wireless is ANC and is 50K. I assume that the sound quality is the same as the wired, but with ANC?

The PXC550 is 42K, approx between the wired and wireless. Better ANC than the above, but Sound Quality not as good?

Looks like Over ears wired is best value if ANC is not important.

        • Thanks! I couldnt see the BT on the ad. :)

I fly weekly and havent know what to get.

        • @pickpals: I used to fly weekly (long flight) and I use the Bose in ear. Bose have the best ANC.
I find them to be the most comfortable. I find these over ears get hot after hours of use. They are great for short interstate trips however.

        • @pickpals: Get the Bose QC35s. They are the current gold standard for noise cancelling, audio performance, and comfort. If you're flying weekly, just take my advice and do it. I promise you a thousand times over you won't regret it.

  • thanks just bought with points. Seems like good value judging from comments based on gift card value of $256

    • so these equate to roughly $256 using FF points?

  • Can't you also get 15% off on your birthday?

  • Showing as sold out for me.

    • still available to me while posting.

      • Weird… Working for me again too!

    • Did you even read those previous ANZ credit card deals

    • +1

      Allrigghty you special snowflake princess!

  • damn, ~1000pts short on a points+cash option

    good deal though

    • Wait for the next Woolworths 2000 points offer, shouldn't be too far off.

  • Nice deal for those unsure how to use QF pts.
    Got the Momentums

  • Thanks OP. Finally can put those credit card bonus points to use

  • Thanks OP! I can finally replace my Sennheiser MM400s!

Still going to keep my Bose QC20s for short travel.

  • thanks, bought one, had just enough points to make this purchase.

  • Bought a set from this same deal after intending to get the Momentum and then seeing the reviews of this one. As I want to use them on flights reviews mostly said that the Momentum headband got uncomfortable after an hour, so make sure you decide what's important. I much prefer the style of the Momentum but I think I would have regretted it on long haul flights, and whilst I value great sound quality, these are still likely to be a big step up from my Audiotechnica's.

Have an email for an unexpected delivery today, hopefully it's them and I can give more feedback later.

    • +1

I wear Momentum 2.0 Wireless over-ear cans for eight hours a day, never a hint of discomfort. (The momentum ON-ears, however, feel like they're clamping my ears onto my skull and give me a headache within 30 minutes.)

Headphone discomfort is an extremely personal thing.

      • Great, good to hear. Unfortunately I couldn't find any to try and the majority of negative comments complained about the headstrong - but otherwise they sound like awesome cans.

Unfortunately my parcel wasn't my headphones, but some other random Oz bargain purchase I'd forgotten about. Shame, as the eta was by the 27th of Jan (purchased before this was posted too).

    • I was in the same boat. I also read that the momentum 2.0 don't offer as much NC. So I think for flights these are the way to go. Still deciding if I should claim the 2.0s to compare but they seem to go for as low as 250 on sale so don't it's as good value as the 550s.

  • Bummer, need a minimum of 17,032 points to do points + pay
    I have 13,257.
Anyone know how to get around this?

I was looking to get the qc35's but these have aptx.

    • I just logged into Qantas for the first time in ages. Looks like you can earn points from their affiliate inks similarly to how cashrewards.com.au works. Eg 5 points for every $1 spent at DJs. That would cost you around ~$800 though. perhaps have an iPad you need to buy? I'm sure there are more ingenious ways to accumulate points quickly though.

      • -1

I think the Woolworths 2,000 points deals are better..? It's my understanding they convert 1:1.

        • No, Woolworths points to Qantas ratio is 2,000 points to 870 points. https://www.qantaspoints.com/earn-points/shopping/woolworths

So you'd need roughly 39,154 Woolworths points. Unless you've got some major supermarket purchases coming up, you'll probably need another approach to get those headphones before the sale ends.

Credit card applications with bonus points are probably your best bet if you want a fairly large chunk of points in one go (and don't already have too many credit cards and/or aren't super worried about your credit rating). Otherwise - there's always flying =)

        • @hayne:

I meant for the sake of getting the extra few points. Didn't realize 2000 points is only 870…? I assumed as 2000 points is $10, it should be $10 worth of Qantas points too.

      • I have spoken to Qantas, they have a buy-points options where you can buy points in blocks of 500, Link: https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/program/usingPoints/topupPā€¦

so in my situation, I need 3300 points to bring me to the minimum points + extra payment which ends up around $350 total.
Which is still a pretty good deal, given it is half price at Qantas.

  • I got one

  • How are these vs qc35

    • This video covers it pretty well
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8stmOTI9uc
Bose a little nicer looking, comfy and lighter, better ANC, but the sennheisers have more features like a touch pad for control gestures, better wireless range and possibly better sound quality

      • PXC550 is lighter. Also one huge deal for me with the Bose QC35 is the "vacuum" feeling I get with it, reports/reviews says the Sennheisers doesn't exhibit the same feeling.

      • Some reviews say ANC is better on PXC but passive is better on QC35

  • Thanks OP, just got one for the Missus. Scrap that- after a bit of looking around, got Seiko Ladies Coutura Solar Diamond Dress Watch (SUT242P-9) for the Missus.
Now the headphones are mine < Muhaa>

  • DJ Gift Card = 16,160 pts

With 20% discount = 12,928 (usually 10% discount for gift cards)

    So
    Sennheiser Momentum Over-Ear 2.0 Wireless ANC = $380
    Sennheiser PXC550 Noise Cancelling Wireless = $330
    Sennheiser Momentum Over-Ear 2.0 Wired = $240

    • What do you mean by 20% off gift cards

      • During some sale you can get 10% off gift cards from the QS. I worked out the above based on 20% as there is a premium for using points versus flight upgrades.

  • Thanks a lot! Awesome deal!

  • Damn only if virgin had the same deal with all the points received from the Samsung deal a while ago!!!

    • I would happily trade my QFF for Velocity points. Much prefer to fly with Virgin so I end up "wasting" my QFF on supermarket cards

  • Nice one, grabbed one of these myself!

  • Great post for a first post. Keep them coming. I purchased - all my points plus $26.

  • Great deal! Was about to get gift cards but this is much better value.

  • +1

Correct me if I'm wrong, but point+pay give you more value for your points.
    Let's say PXC550 cost $629 at JB

    42580 = 1.477c per point
    17032 + $196.72 = 2.54c per point

    • seems like the sweet spot

    • Possibly, but when you have 220k FFP then I'm happy to spend some :)

    • Yes you're right, the more dollars you opt to pay the more the points are worth.

  • Thanks OP, splurged. Now I have:
    Bragi Dash
    2x Plantronics BackBeat Pro
    Sennheiser RS220
    Sennheiser RS180
    AudioTechnica M50x
    AudioTechnica M50
Plus a variety of other cheaper headphones. Hmm so is there a "Headphones Anonymous" I can join?

  • I have 475,000 points sitting around

    Might as well

    • Interested in selling them :-D ?

      • lol, sorry nope

i'm waiting for our new baby to settle before we go on our next holiday..

so just racking up points for now

      • I have a lot of points too.
But wouldn't want to risk losing them, if I get caught.

  • Does anyone know how the 15% off birthday code is deducted from FF points? Would it be 15% of 42,580?
