One Person Won $55 Million in The Powerball Tonight

Can everyone please keep an eye out on neighbours, friends or family who disappear all of a sudden?

I need a new MRI machine. Government said no.

Don't ask why.

P.S. How would you invest/spend $55,000,000?

See thread How to Invest $500,000? and scale up 110 times?

While you're at it, if you notice someone's OzBargain activity dropping off that's also a dead-giveaway sign.

Hmmm, haven't seen a post from JV in a while now, could it be….?

    • +1

Doubt it's JV who just posted here :-)

  • So now we know where Broden has been

    • Nah, he probably got rich just from 'Brodening' activities :-)

      • +2

But he grabs everything, there are no limits, so next will be the US megamillions

That's a lot of halal snack packs and pork rolls

If i won fifty million dollars that's a lot of enneloops for everyone FULL PRICE!

I'm a big believer in helping women get into the workforce.

If I won $55m, I would build a big brothel.

    • +1

You. I like you. Getting them females employed.

    • Would have been fine if the women want to work. But many of the women and girls in this trade are typically abused, kidnapped, sold and trafficked into the commercial sex industry (prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation) (See Human Trafficking Facts | Sex Slavery and Trafficking).

In I was sold into sexual slavery (Jan 2015)

According to the United Nations, she was one of an estimated 2.4 million people around the globe who are victims of human trafficking at any one time, 80% of whom are being exploited as sexual slaves.

Maybe find another way? E.g. helping girls in third-world countries get an education. That would get them participating in the workforce, without the attendant human suffering.

    • You first customer :)

      Kidding.

Buy an $80,000 car, and then get some good financial advice from Westpac.

    • Lol!

    • +2

buy a fleet of $80,000 cars obviously?

Honestly I wouldn't invest it other than sticking it in the bank.

$55M @ 3% interest = 1.65M annual salary (less tax). I could handle that. Near 0% risk unless the bank collapses. The biggest risk would be spending it…. so perhaps lock most of it away for 5 year term deposits.

Oh and the other big risk is family you didn't know you had suddenly making contact…..

Actually prob not, thats too boring….I'd do something like this:

    Buy a new mansion: ~$5M
    Buy beach house: ~$2M
    Couple of new cars: $1M
Pay off other family's mortgages: $2M
$45M left to invest and earn interest or dividends.

    Retire.

I am with you. If I had $55m I wouldn't be too fussed about investing and trying to earn above 3% interest, I would already be set for life. Why take on risk if you really don't need to.

    • Oh and the other big risk is family you didn't know you had suddenly making contact….

Maybe keep it very quiet and low key? Oh, you can't, not with the mansion/beach house and all … But with the initial strategy - just cash in the bank - you can.

    • That's nearly 50% of your salary to tax.

      • +1

        So? :)

If you invested it in property you'd have to pay CGT tax and tax on rental income. Or in shares you pay tax on dividends (unless franked) and CGT.

Everything is taxed…… :P THERES NO ESCAPING THE TAXES!!! :D

It's still 871k income after tax. I think I could just survive on that salary ;)

    • +1

The biggest risk would be spending it…

This. If i lived survived the first 12 months, without a lengthily jail term, seriously injuring myself, contracting a nasty venereal disease or suffer some sort of organ failure, I'd be fine. But it'd be touch and go for a LOT of those first 12 months.

    • The Queensland Department of Education could be on the lookout for new staff soon after 21 members of a 35-strong departmental team shared in a $55 million Powerball jackpot.

      The other 14 missed out

      • Sucks to be them.

        • No, it doesn't.

99% of people will never win the 1st division prize. THis is better than never winning.

  • I can finally afford to buy popcorn and drinks at the cinema.

    • I have had to refinance my property everytime i go to the cinema.

  • How would you keep it safe?
I was thinking split it up across different banks in case one goes under.
What else could you do? Some USD, bitcoin?

    • Under the matress.
