Australia - Hanoi Airlines Opinions??

Hi All

Looking at airlines that go to Hanoi - looks like Air Asia, Malaysian etc -has anyone flown on them lately?

We are going in November.

I am aware the airlines have sales and assume they would be 3-6 months before November.

Or would we be better to fly with say, Cathay to HCM City and get an internal flight from there?

Vietnam airlines would USD$228 each which seems a bit pricey.

Thanks in anticipation.

  • Hi,

I just flew AirAsiaX to HCM from Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur and can recommend the airline. The seats are good, the cost of food is reasonable - although I found the selection to be not to my liking - but that is just me. The only negative was that the flight from MEL to KUL had no entertainment systems available.

The positive was that AirAsia uses OptionTown and I bid for a Empty Seat Option (~$50) and was successful in getting a complete set of three seats on the way back (overnight flight). That made the flight back very comfortable. They were also giving full flat bed option for about $350 - which I decided not to use.

The service was efficient, friendly and easy at all airports.

I also flew VietJet from KUL to HCM for like $20 and can not fault that service either.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers.

    • Hi

Thanks v much appreciated and will look up VietJet as i had not heard of them.

  • Yes, you can get internal fight in HCM but to make sure you have enough time for changing flight at HCM.

  • If you want to visit HN, just choose the flight to HN. Transit to HCM to HN is just an option when you fly with VNairlines from AUs to VN

  • Hi,

I noticed China Southern are taking bookings for flights ex Adelaide.
So you could cost Adelaide-Guangzhou-Hanoi… against your other options.

    • hi holdenmg

Just checked their site and fare was anywhere between $1800 to $3500 which is too much.

  • we did CP to HCM and then used a combination of vietjet and jetstar

Both were about the same (VJ and JS) on price and timeliness. Advantage of Jetstar was to collect the QFF/status. Very cheap and we booked 3 months out

    • Hi basl
The CP you noted was Cathay P I presume?

Do they have sales as we are about 10 months out at this stage.

An alternative would be Jetstar to HCM then Jetstar Pacific from there??

  • Recently travelled to Vietnam (HCMC and Hanoi) in Nov 2016. Flew with Air Asia from Syd to HCMC(stopover in Kuala Lumpur for a few hours). From HCMC, we flew one-way to Hanoi with Jetstar Pacific - total for 2 people (one person with 30kg checked baggage) was approx. $155 AUD.

    • Hi What was Air asia like??

      • +1

Flown with them plenty of times (and did so to Vietnam a couple of years ago). They're my go to international airline now.

Cheap and cheerful. Food and drink are cheap too ($5 for a meal). The seats are fairly comfortable.

The only downside is you wont fly direct and will need to fly via KL.

      • Hi, I've flown with AirAsia multiple times - I recall majority of my flights with them being on time with no delays.

Agree with SirFibbled that food/drinks/seat selection are affordable. It's also my go-to airline when I'm going to anywhere in Asia!

Re: stopover in Kuala Lumpur - some stopovers are long but you might manage to find some flights with short stopovers. E.g. my flight from Sydney departed in the evening (around 10pm) and arrived in Kuala Lumpur around 4am - so my stopover was only 3-4 hours before my 8am flight from Kuala Lumpur to HCMC. [I'm sure there's also flights from Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi direct] My ticket was a fly-thru ticket so there was no need to collect my check-in luggage/go through immigration at Kuala Lumpur. The airport has food outlets which were opened at that time when I was there and there's plenty of other travelers around at that time waiting for their connecting flights

  • As an alternative, you could Fly Royal Brunei. There are occasionally deals on ozbargain, if you don't mind the stopover. We also stopped over but found there wasn't much in Brunei to do. Flew with them over Christmas 15 to HCM. From HCM flew VietJet to Hanoi. If you ain't on a tight schedule VietJet/Jetstar are ok; else choose Vietnam Air instead. Out flight from Hanoi to HCM was detailed on the way back. Not a major problem but just something to keep in mind.
