Ballantine's Scotch Whisky 700mL $34 (Click & Collect) @ First Choice Liquor

550
FREEDEL

Lots of favourable reviews at Dan Murphy's where it's selling for $41.

"One of our favourites here at first Choice Liquor. Ballantine's Finest is one of the world's best and is blended with 50 single malt and 4 single grain whiskies. The most important of these are the signature malts of Miltonduff & Glenburgie that give the whisky its distinct characteristics. Ballantines Finest was Jim Murray's No Age Statement Blend of the Year with a whopping 96 points."

Reasonable deal, but a terrible scotch (IMO).

    • I agree

    • Yep - horrible stuff.

      What makes you say that?

Throw in some coke, and presto, cheap mixer.

+1. My best go to whisky when nothing I prefer is on sale.

  • Ballantines "Finest" Scotch

  • you get what you pay for with Scotch.

    • agree….

the bottle with $200 will have big difference than those $30 a bottle.

However, I'm not sure the 50YO will have much difference with 30YO. and I can't afford to buy it and try it.. lol…

      • The price difference of the 50YO is hard to justify. I'm happy with my lowly $200 Scotches.

My favourite bottle of blended scotch, but I wouldn't pay more than $32. You could go a lot worse, like Black Douglas for $33.49 delivered

Have you tried monkey shoulder? Thats my fav blended and go to in sub $45 pricerange

      • I don't think so, definitely not at that price range.
I did just finish enjoying a $36 bottle of Label 5 Gold using $10 AmEx cashback.

      • Lot's of bars are keeping Monkey Shoulder, I might try sometime before buying myself. But I was curious about what both Monkey Shoulder and Ballantine's taste like.

    • I looked up Black Douglas reviews and
      Dan Murphy's have a 74% from 32 reviews,
BWS have 100% but from only 1 review.

Seems a typical un-aged mixer scotch. I like the naming from James Douglas, but what's wrong with Black Douglas?

I prefer to ignore all reviews and make up my own mind. I find Black Douglas a bit heavy going. To me, Ballantine's is a smooth cheap mixer, second to none. Sometimes my local bottle shop has the 12yo cheaper than normal one. I wouldn't normally waste money on the 12yo, unless the power of price compels you me.

        • Thanks for the heads up. I'll go get something to mix these with. I went to try the Black Douglas and the taste is a bit sharp because hasn't been aged. Although I only mixed with 1 measure of dry vermouth to 3 measures of whisky and generous splashes of bitters. Anyone recommend a decent mixer?

I thought 12yo was already quite good haha! I wonder what comes out of the barrels from 12-15y that makes the taste and price go up? If the same compound, then I'm interested in double barrel whiskies. Now I wanna learn wood work haha

  • Well I like this scotch as a cheap mixer, but the price isn't amazing.

Delivered it's pretty damn good of a price. As for the product itself sure it's a bit meh but still way ahead of a lot the other stuff in this price range. Or just go spend 2x on a decent bottle and be happy.

Please don't put yourself drinking this tripe. Johnny Walker Black is really good and only costs $50.

        • Personally I would not touch either, I was only commenting on the price and for people who use the stuff with mixers who cares, it's cheap scotch. I love proper single malt scotch straight up or with a drop or two of water depending on ABV to get more taste out of it. It's a rare occasion and prices start from $70 (which is not a deal) so none of this "tripe" for me.

        • Are there any carcinogens with the smoky whiskies? Do the Islay varieties get aged in charred barrels or burnt with peat?

        • Personally just not understanding these 'deals' which basically occur every day of the week in most shops. This is cheap Scotch. I don't drink it, but if I did, JW Black is what I'd drink.

        • You might want to look into carcinogenic properties of alcohol before you delve too deep into the worm hole of burnt peat.

  • Why I never see Rice Wine on special ?

Worth checking your email to see if you were sent this offer: 1000 bonus flybuys points for $30+ spend at First Choice Liquor.

    • I have $60+ spend at First Choice Liquor http://i.imgur.com/YvSEmPG.jpg

      • I got spen $30 for 500. Based on normal spend most likely.

  • I remember drinking this when I was 18 cause it was cheap (circa 2004).

  • Dirt cheap ordered 2 bottles :)

    • Legit isn't great whiskey though.

I wish whisky had zero alcohol so I coud drink it purely for the taste. This horrible stuff has 40% alcohol- yuck.
