Decent "Lifetime" VPN

Hey guys so…

I consider myself fairly tech savvy but how do VPNs work exactly? Aren't you redirecting ALL your traffic through the VPN, meaning you can only get information as fast as the VPN can send/receive it? I ask because I can no longer use the pirate bay and would quite like to again, hence I figure I'll need a VPN.

All net traffic goes through a VPN.. Once connected (you typically run a client program on your PC and you connect to a server), all web requests are sent thru that network but the data is encrypted before it is sent. Typically with a VPN service, the speeds are usually limited because the VPN server usually serves not just you but also everybody else who happens to be a customer.
the other factors for slow down would be overheads, and the time taken to encrypt and decrypt. These processes take time and CPU power.

Though some people do use a VPN just for the sole purpose of torrenting. And there are a couple of dozen VPN's that do support P2p but some do not protect you when it comes to privacy. To see which is best, you can use https://thatoneprivacysite.net/ which is a site that rates and reviews all the VPN providers available.

I can no longer use the pirate bay

The solution to this is trivial.. Just use a different dns.

But I'd be wary of torrenting your linux iso's without some form of protection though

I sent you a PM in regards to another means, but for everyone else: You can use a free VPN service such as TunnelBear, as you only need to redirect traffic to browse the site and grab the .torrent files you require before switching it off to download on your regular web. (Unless you're using the VPN for privacy in regards to committing piracy, then by all means.)

  • Private Internet Access is who I use when acquiring my viewing material.

I have ADSL 2+ and do not notice any loss of speed while downloading (around 13 mbps max)

I also read a great motto the other week.

'If you are not paying, you are the product.'

I would never use a free service to protect my privacy.

    • "I would never use a free service to protect my privacy"

I'd have to agree with this with a great big "especially for lifetime services" with the addition "that you haven't confirmed has a no log policy and allows torrenting".

A confirmation site is listed on this thread (not known to me so trusting commenter knows what's what) also (bit it is a year old now)

      https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-anonymous-review-160220/

Googling will supply other review sites.

I've found Windscribe's lifetime offering to be quite inexpensive and effective. I prefer their program for Mac as opposed to PIA which crashed a lot!

  • Try this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/286176 I've signed up, and seem decent. Haven't used the service much yet.

Also I'd suggest alternate source than PirateBay anyways.

    • …Also I'd suggest alternate source than PirateBay anyways….

      For example???

      • RARbg for one, but it's depends on the content you're after. I wouldn't trust most of the current versions of PirateBay

        • Wish they had a plugin for vuze. Kat was great and I could search straight with vuze if I wanted.
Any other suggestions feel free to PM me thanks.

    • Why….and as PVA says "example".

Having said the above it's also a case of "what do you want" and "where can you get it" as well.

    • I got the same deal (VPNSecure) and they block PirateBay, but if you really need PirateBay you could always use one of their proxy servers (just search "piratebay" on google).

      • You're saying VPNSecure blocks PirateBay? I'm using Google DNS, but I doubt they would, even on the Australian proxies. It's tunneled connections.

        • I mean it is an Australian VPN, so it can't just magically avoid Australian censorship, can it?

        • Sorry, I read a review saying that they blocked it and never tried it myself. I tried it just then using a US West server and it does work. One random website which seems to not load for me using the Australian servers is azlyrics for some reason? I have not tried it using other locations.

  • Private Internet Access. I don't think it's lifetime but it's very fast and reliable.
Also I've found that the openvpn program works WAY FASTER than their program.
