Car hire - Budget or Hertz, what's the general recommendation and why?

Titles pretty much self explanatory.
Require a hire car in the near future for about two weeks.
Have a limit of $50 a day.
Want to be covered for unlimited km and no excess for anythings (don't trust hire companies, so rather eliminate slight of hand from the onset).

So which is recommended and why?

Whatever is cheapest after all possible discounts.

And in the event of an accident, travel insurance covers the excess

  • I should mention, it's not for a holiday, yet for whilst my car is being repaired.
That's another debacle, apparently you're not supposed to overtake stationary cars according to insurance companies, as you're unable to ascertain their intentions!
Yep, appealing that sucker, as I KNOW I'm in the right :)

    • Ooh, nasty. Was it a double lane road? Or you crossed into the oncoming lane to overtake?

      • Suburban two way, single lane back street, with no line markings or divider.
        Following an elderly lady.
She slowwd down for no apparent reason, I braked accordingly.
She stopped, I braked accordingly once again.
Approached her at a crawl as checking for the reason she had stopped.
Saw none, she still had not indicated or shower any other sogns of anyrhing beyond just stipping.
Checked for hazards, oncomming traffic, habib in his P plate ricermobile going for a suocide overtake from behond etc.
Just us two and no hazards, so indicsted, checked agsin and startrd to qccelerate to overtake.
Half way passing her, she takes off and turns right without indicating, hitting my left side and pushing my right side into a parked car on the other side of the road.
Despite her changing direction and speed whilst being overtaken and not indicating before or even during turning, insurance wants to blame me!

I know a copper from one of my social activities, so asked him under the guise it's a mate in the situation, so as to not artificially pollute his advise.
He stated she is in the wrong.

Be careful of those parked cars folks, as you don't know their intentions according to insurance companies, thus shouldn't overtake them!

        • Fair enough.

It's a tough one if there's no witnesses, but I hope you have success.

    • single lane road? multi lane road? did the idiot have his indicator on? :D

      Need back story !

Are you sure you can't organise a hire car through the repairers?

Otherwise all the major companies are much of a muchness. Go with the cheapest.

https://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au will compare them for you.

Why are you limiting yourself to just two companies?

    • That's the options I was given from the insurance company.

      • has the insurance co shown you the T&C's of the car insurance benefit.
(I assume your policy has this - the insurance co regards you at fault).
does $50 per day cover a similar car to what you drive (unlimited km and no excess)?

  • For the cheapest car rental, go for http://www.rentabomb.com.au/

  • I often find Qantas has great deals on rentals, I suspect they subsidise some of the cost as a trade off for the advertising? Not sure why rentals are sometimes cheaper on qantas.com….
