First PC Build, please check

I have been wanting to built a pc for a while and with the current ebay 20% off sale, I came up with this. I want a decent gaming pc that runs cool, as I work in Regional NSW where the temps can get hot. Everything listed is from the sale except the case which I will have to get from umart. With the sale the total comes to $1650. Things I'm not sure on are the motherboard and the graphics cards, should I get the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or Radeon RX 480 Gaming OC 8GB ?

I have a Samsung SDD already purchased.

Any comments would help, Thanks

I would ditch the CPU cooler and use that money to get a better GPU, water cooling might sound great but the benefits are negligible and if noise is the concern you will still have other fans with this build. And do yourself a massive favor and get an SSD for the OS install, the single best investment when building a new computer.

    • thanks, I have SSD that I already purchased. Completely forgot, I'll edit the post

  • Storage:
You need an SSD for your boot drive. Then get your currently chosen 2TB or the 3TB Seagate here if you need the storage.

    Video Card:
RX 480 8GB is better than GTX 1060 6GB according to this. I personally would get better GPU (i.e. GTX 1080) if money is not an issue. RX480 is fine too! Also see this GPU Hierarchy Table.

    Wireless Network Adapter:
Do you really need this? For maximum experience, I think LAN cable would suffice unless you cannot erect a LAN cable from the router to your PC.

    • GPUBoss is a shocking website, the literally pull numbers out of their ass. As it stands the 1060 6gb is faster than an 480 8gb. But with vulkan and dx12 and the 2gb extra vram the 480 is more future proof

  • Thanks for the table, i have been researching GTX 1080 but not sure if I should purchase one with the GTX 1080 ti coming out soon.

1080 ti hasnt even been announced. itll probly launch after amds line up

  • H100i is a great cooler if you plan on overclocking heavily. Otherwise you can get a decent OC out of a much cheaper (but somewhat more time consuming to install) Cooler Master 212, or a Cryorig H7.
Definitely need an SSD if you don't want it to feel like something out of 2005. 250GB seems to be the price sweet spot ATM. I'd prefer an M.2 drive like the Intel 600P or the Samsung 960 EVO to fit your mobo, but the SATA drive performance delta to like the Samsung 850 EVO is unnoticeable in most cases.
May as well spend and extra $30 for a 3TB drive if you plan on filling it up.
    3GB 1060s or 4GB 480s are better value GPUs for a 1080p build, consider a 1070/1080 for 2k/4k.
750W PSU is possibly overkill if you want to save a little money. Check this: http://www.techspot.com/review/1209-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060/… ~500W or even less would be better value unless you plan on dual GPU at some point. Aim for an 80 Plus Gold PSU with a good warranty.
Unless you have a dual band AC router that wireless card isn't worth the extra money over a basic one like the TP-Link WN881ND. Like others have said running a cable is better if you have the time and ability to do so.

  • Probably don't need CPU cooler.
Depending on what you're doing graphically it's worth considering a better graphics card. It's fine for full HD gaming but if you want to go down the path of VR or 1440 ultrawide get something better. At this stage AMD's best of this generation is the 480 which is slightly better than the 1060. 490 should be released sometime this year. Nvidia has the 1070 and 1080 with the 1080Ti coming eventually. If you're going VR you'll want a different case as some have the VR headset connections on the front for better access.
Get an SSD, I'd recommend 500gb but 240gb will be fine. Also get a bigger HDD, 3TB is best value for money locally. Amazon usually has sales for bigger drives but I think they're more suited for servers/NAS.

  • Just a few questions:

    • What is your budget?
    • You're missing a monitor in your setup, do you have a current monitor that you can use?
    • What kind of performance are you looking for? Gaming at 1080p, 1440p or 4k? This gives us a better idea of what kind of graphics card we should recommend to you.
    • Will you be overclocking? If not, would you be open to overclocking in the future?
    • Is aesthetics important to your build?

Also, since you're in regional NSW you might have to get some of these parts shipped to you. It might be cheaper (if you factor in shipping) to get most of your parts from the same place.

    • -What is your budget?
Original budget was 1.5k, but don't mind spending a bit more to future proofing. I'm going to the change the psu to:Corsair CS Series Modular CS550M 550W 80 Plus Gold Certified Power Supply and the adapter:TP-Link WN881ND as people suggested above. Which should bring down the cost to $1560. I'm looking to move houses so not sure if I'll be able erect a LAN cable, therefore being safe and getting an an adapter.
-You're missing a monitor in your setup, do you have a current monitor that you can use?
ASUS VS248H-P 24" Full HD 1920x1080 2ms HDMI DVI VGA Back-lit LED Monitor, should I look to get a new one?
-What kind of performance are you looking for? Gaming at 1080p, 1440p or 4k? This gives us a better idea of what kind of graphics card we should recommend to you.
1080p currently, might upgrade the monitor when I get back to Sydney full time. I was trying to get the best possible graphics card for $400ish. Plan to play overwatch and battlefield.
-Will you be overclocking? If not, would you be open to overclocking in the future?
It's the future proofing again, leaving it open to do in the future.
-Is aesthetics important to your build?
I think I'm spending to much on the case, but I really like it. I guess I'm spending this much money so I want to be aesthetic.
-Also, since you're in regional NSW you might have to get some of these parts shipped to you. It might be cheaper (if you factor in shipping) to get most of your parts from the same place.
Ebay sale is convenient in that way, free shipping but I go back to sydney regularly so I can go msy or umart as other options

      Some extra notes:
Current setup overheats to the point I can't use it during the day (very old) plus with k processor, thats why I was looking at Liquid cooling. Researching
fan coolers now but not sure yet

      • What are the specs of your old PC? Assuming it's not too old, fix the heating issues (new cooler?), pick up a nice GPU and you might not even need a new PC.

        • Dad uses old one so leave it for him, but if you know how to fix heating I'll take suggestions
PCU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T
          GPU: Nvidia Geforece GTX 465
          MB: asus M4a89TD PRO USB3
          RAM: 8GB
          PSU: Not Sure

        • @naka6423:

Oh when you said "(very old) plus with k processor" I thought you had an older intel processor (which hold up really well). I'm not sure how well that AMD will hold up, so maybe an upgrade is due.

As for fixing the heating problems, I would suggest installing a program that monitors CPU temperature (HWmonitor?) just to confirm the issue. If it's getting close to 100 then something needs to be done.

I'd suggest taking the fan off, blowing the dust out and reapplying the thermal paste. If that doesn't solve it, then pick up a cheap CPU air cooler and that should solve it.

Here's what I recommend if you're not going to overclock, if you do decide to overclock you might see around a 10% increase in performance. So I think it's better off putting that money towards a graphics card as games are more reliant on a graphics card to perform.

        Type Item Price
        CPU Intel Core i5-7600 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor $329.00 @ MSY
CPU Cooler Stock Intel Cooler FREE with i5-7600
        Motherboard ASUS PRIME B250M-K $119.00 @ MSY
        Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory $129.00 @ MSY
        Storage Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $98.00 @ MSY
Case NZXT S340 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case $109.00 @ Mwave Australia
        Power Supply Corsair 80+ Gold Semi-Modular CS550M $119.00 @ MSY
        Wireless Network Adapter TP-LINK TL-WN881ND 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Express Adapter $19.00 @ MSY
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
        Total $922.00 without GPU

This leaves about $578.00 in your $1500 budget for a graphics card and peripherals. You can probably squeeze a GTX 1070 into this build if you're able to get it close to $500 through sales, otherwise you can find a GTX 1060 6GB or RX 480 8GB (these two cards will be perfect for playing Overwatch and Battlefield @ 60 fps on 1080p at max settings, which is what your current monitor is capable of doing) on sale for around $350-400 and have some money left over for a mechanical keyboard. You also might to find the other parts for cheaper through sales as well, as these are all the standard prices from MSY.

Might also need to put around $100 aside for a copy of Windows 10, unless you're able to get a free copy somewhere.

        • Thanks man, really appreciate your effort. Your right, might get the Intel Core i5-7600 to reduce costs and spend more on the graphics card.

        • Thanks moneybaby, i think ill do this, what is the best GFX card to match for 1440p gaming?

        • +1

@tuzii: I'd recommend getting a GTX 1070 if you're looking to game at 1440p. You'll also need to find a monitor that has a 2560x1440 resolution.

I'd also recommend getting an SSD with the build and installing Windows on that.
