Hi Sam, we do not condone taking a knife around unless you have an explicit reason to do so. The "everyday carry" thing is marketing from the US that the products come with.
Carrying a knife in public is perfectly legal provided you have a good reason to have it.
I would love to hear the good reason to carry a Japanese type sword in public….
@LowCostTraveller: swords are not knives and are prohibited weapons as opposed to controlled weapons here in Vic. Best to check your state laws as in Vic you need a permit or a letter from the chief commissioner.

There are classes to teach you how to use japanese swords where you basically cut paper and bamboo and learn discipline etc. Not much different to other martial arts and is an extension to kendo.
It is also fun to cut paper, bottles of water, etc.
