NBN planned? How to connect ASAP?

As my ADSL stuggled to even get max ADSL2 (not 2+) speeds of 500k/s(5000/900) last night, I did an idle check of my address in the NBN finder like I do every 6 months when I need a kick-me-down.

What shocked me was that the message actually gave a planned time - APR-JUN 2017!

I was hoping to get some advice from others who might have been in a similar position. Particularly the following two questions which I couldn't find here or on whirlpool.

  1. Are these planned dates anywhere near reliable? The fact that it's close fills me with a bit more confidence.

  2. Is there any way to establish what is proposed - i.e. FTTH,MTM, etc. (I don't have cable but I think it is in the street)

  3. What's the best way to find out when it's ready and can be utilised? I believe the NBNCO site and some ISPs have 'let me know' buttons. Is this the best way to keep informed? Are all ISPs on the same page?

Thanks for the help!

  • My area went "ready for sale" on 13 January and my ISP (Internodde) sent me an email 2 days ago saying they're ready to switch me over to the NBN.

I'm in an HFC area, but the new website doesn't tell you what technology you're getting, and this only changed in the last one month or so.

Your ISP would probably know though if you can't figure it out.

  • They're skipping over our area for the time being because we've got HFC, but going by the previous properties I've been in: Once you've got an advertised start-time, they're usually pretty good at sticking to it.

Once the work is complete it'll go "ready for sale" as above, which will allow you to contact a provider of your choice to start the sign-up procedure. (Or allow for the ISP you're with to begin to move you across.)

  • I don't have cable but I think it is in the street

How come you're using ADSL, when you have cable in the street?

Is there any way to establish what is proposed

I would guess that you'll get NBN via HFC.

If you have optus cable, I would expect delays (just speculating). Telstra cable will probably be converted sooner.

  • 1) They're relatively correct, although I'd check with ISP as to the actual RFS date. The ISP gets more information regarding this.

    2) NBNCo used to give out this information but I believe they stopped doing that at the end of last year (IIRC). If you are not in a greenfield area, not a brand new house during the laying of fibre, do not have access to cable than you are most likely FTTN. However, this is still a guess, I know Optus was able to tell me what kind of service I had when I asked (go in store… the telephone and online team didn't know what was happening… they said I was getting FTTH at one point)

    3) To be honest with you, I believe most ISP will transfer you over to NBN as soon as you are RFS. Talk to your ISP or your future ISP about it.

  • We had target dates of June 2016 (and nearby areas went active then), followed by October, followed by 'no date available' followed by April 2017.
Last week I got a "To the householder" letter from TPG saying you can now get NBN, and the NBN website confirms it, so I have ordered.

If you type your address in here, it will tell you what technology will be on offer:
    https://www.finder.com.au/nbn-tracker

Not a single one of the "Let me know" forms I filled out on the NBN's site, MyNBNinfo, iiNET, Internode, TPG, Belong, Telstra or Nuskope notified me that I could now order (yes, that was a lot of notifications, but I was punting they might have a better offer than the public ones for keen customers).

So I conclude the NBN doesn't care about accuracy in regards to install date, it is all about managing expectations, and the rest of the world doesn't know what is going on in the network building department anyway.
The best course is to regularly check on the NBN site itself:
    http://www.nbnco.com.au/connect-home-or-business/check-your-…

I ordered with Belong, who make you schedule a cut over appointment, presumably to get your line patched to the NBN instead of the Telstra exchange. Their appointment system online doesn't seem to work properly but when I called the call centre they seemed to know what they were doing. I'll find out next week.

    • got a letterbox drop a few weeks ago saying mid 2017

so I tried the links hoping to confirm or see more detail
      nbnco link states Jul 2017
finder link says not for 3+ years…..

      • Finder seems to update periodically, and has some info not displayed on the NBN site itself (like what technology!) so it is a useful supplementary site.

  • Are these planned dates anywhere near reliable?

So far, not for me. NBN says that Rye Victoria was available on Jan 1st 2017, and Telstra even had a caravan out spruiking their plans. There are NBN FTTN cabinets every couple of streets, and they've been there for ages, but as far as I can tell, it's impossible to get connected.

Maybe they just got the year wrong.
