How I Made Money from an EB Games Trade-in

Ok so I was down at my local Cash Converts and they had a copy of Wii Sports + Resort for $10. I bought it because I thought It was cheap before realising that they were about $10 for just Wii Sports Resort. Out of curiosity, I rang up EB Games and they offered $14 for it! I went in and handed it over the next day and received $14 back. Making a grand total of $4 profit!

Have you ever profited on EBGames trade-ins?

  • Yes, but do remember that they'll give out store credit - which is not good for those who don't want anything from there at the time - like me.

I am aware you can get cash instead for sacrificing 20% of the original trade-in value, but that's a lot taken away - especially for games that have so little value (which applies to most games these days).

'Profited'? No. But saved a bundle of money? Sure have! Several years ago, over several months, I purchased games from Big W (Those $10 sales) as well as when WOW Sight and Sound went bust, and would trade them in for anywhere from $12 to $18 credit. After months of doing this, I bought my ps3 with the saved up credit and $11 cash. Still have all the receipts saved from that memorable adventure. Good times.

I hope you invested that wisely…

He did. It allowed him to call up EB Games, then travel to EA games to make the transfer. He has never been so happy to work for $4 an hour.

  • Purchased a lot of knock off games for my gamyboy sp and traded them in at eb making 100% profit from them and traded my sp for a direct swap for a psp.

  • Yeah. I bought like 6 Spider-Man for wiiu and cod for vita from Aldi and traded it into jb and got double moneys. Then jb banned me from trading in.

This use to be a big thing around 2009-2010.

JB use to have a trade 3 for 1 new release game. Back than they had an exclusion list, not an inclusion, so there was a lot of stuff you could pick up cheap.

Could get 3 games for around $40.

EB than had a deal in the first week of a new release where you could trade in and get about $110 of credit.

If I recall, I had an initial outlay of about $80-$100 and got about $1k worth of stuff.

    • Yeah, I used to do this too. Always had to keep changing stores with each trade though, but being close to the city meant you could hit 4-5 pretty quickly.

More recently, I took them up on the 50% extra trade around Christmas (+20% for L4 EB World). Made a boatload on old games that I found in a box after I'd finished moving house. (Only catch was I couldn't gift-card it. Had to spend it in store that day.)

    • I did this once back then when a local video rental store was closing and clearing their PS3 games for $5. Got a dozen or so and "price matched" JB's trade in deal at EB, turning $60 into $400 credit. Good times.

    • I did this a lot also, but I went a step further. I would put $90 on a preorder and when the game came out I would pay the remainder in cash then return the game and get $100 back all in cash, because the new receipt had payment type as cash instead trade in.

  • Seems like a lot of "work" for $4 dollars
I guess it takes out the time wastage factor of scumtree / ebay and their horrible fees on postage and final value

I bought up around 60 $5 games from HN when they went out of gaming and traded most of them for $1k~ store credit which bought me a PS4 mega pack preorder and other stuff.

    • Where did you trade it in? That's fantastic

      • EB Games

  • I did when i bought my PS3, they let me trade in the preowned games that came with it i got a game i was buying Free and $8 off the Console

  • A lot of the cheap games you can get from Target for $10/$20 will usually get you a small profit, especially if you're level 4 and trade to a pre order during a promotion

  • Reminds me of when I bought crappy Kinect games for $10 back when it was new (2010 - 2011) and abused the JB Hi Fi trade in deals to get multiple copies of Gears of War 3, Halo 4, Resident Evil 6, etc. Good times.

the petrol you used going from Cash Converters to EB games was probably more then $4, no profit there mate

  • Once bought a random bag of 15 or so loose N64 carts at a thrift store for $15. EB gave $7.50 for each game.
