  • I have one of the Bakerstone ones like this from Bunnings…not sure if theres much difference 'inside'
If you have a bbq that can put out a decent amount of heat these things work pretty well. Need to protect the opening from any breeze/wind though as it loses radiating heat pretty easily..

Have used it a few times and it definitely works better than just a pizza stone by itself, though you could probably DIY a similar/better setup if you were so inclined

    • To circumvent the loss of heat out the front could you close the BBQ hood or will that bake the oven?

      • i close the lid down on top and then hang a towel over my hoods rail to stop air blowing in the front

Instructions say not to close the hood on it, but i havent seen any negatives and it means a higher temperature is reached for the couple of attempts I've done

We have a stone base, bought for around 10bux or something. Actually we have 2, used them again yesterday.

Last minute decision to have pizza for dinner so we went off to Foodland and brought some of their dough and it wasnt long before we were eating some pizza for din-dins (cooked on BBQ)

The stone bases work really well

    • so we went off to Foodland and brought some of their dough

You know you cam whip the base up from scratch pretty quickly ? My parter does all the time. Probably not much longer than a return trip to Foodland

      • yeh, sometimes though you just couldnt be bothered no matter how easy.

      • Care to post the recipe? I'm looking for a good thin base one that had been tried and tested.

        • let it rise three times, and be gentle.

We don't measure really but this recipe looks like what we use:
          http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/14433/pizza+dough

Notes: Woolworths sell a big tube of yeast which would make 50 or more bases.
We normally just combine all the dry ingredients including yeast and sugar together then add the warm water and oil. takes less than 5 min to make.
If we have time we let it rise, even 10 min is enough, 30 is better. You can use it straight away if in a hurry, will still make a decent base.

If you are using your regular oven, put it on as hot as it goes.

          @Duff5000:

and if you dont mind making it a few days out, you can get a better dough/flavour from a recipe like this
          http://feelingfoodish.com/the-best-new-york-style-pizza-doug…

I find the 'quick' dough recipes always taste more 'bread' like than 'pizza base' like

        • @SBOB:
Using enough oil and salt then getting the dough thin enough seems to be the key.

Edit: Your link has some good tips, might give it a go one day. The quick dough we have been making already tastes better than most bought shops so i am not too worried but if i have the time ill give it a go.

        • Thanks all - greatly appreciated.

What's the point of this? Why not use your kitchen oven?

higher heat, pizza stone in close proximity all round

aim is to replicate a proper pizza oven.. it doesnt, but its definitely a step up from a normal household oven or plain old pizza stone in the oven/on a bbq

      • Worth trying your regular oven first. Our AEG does a good job of pizza on fan forced at hottest temp. Not all ovens are equal though.

I wouldnt mind making a wood fired pizza oven though. Not sure i could be bothered with the prep time to use it.
