I really don't get events like these. Same as the colour fun runs.

The proceeds and the charities are questionable at best. More like a commercial money making activity for the organisers.

FYI, I do donate to charities, but only ones I'm certain only a small % is going to admin fees. Sorry Warnie.

I understand the cynicism somewhat, but Bicycle Network is a not for profit who do pretty good work advocating and advancing cycling, and the fundraising is going to the Youth Support and Advocacy Service, so all money is going to good causes. Both organisations doing good work.

      No warnie in sight

PS I'm unaffiliated, but think they are both decent organisations

      • As someone who just completed a diploma in youth work, I had a fair bit of interaction with YSAS and they're definitely one of the better groups I did placement with. Some of them, I'm not saying Beyond Blue or anything, were absolute assholes and on several occasions denied services to people for no apparent reason other than laziness.

If you're worried about a charity, you can search for them here: http://www.acnc.gov.au/

They are required to do annual reporting, including reporting of revenues. If you're interested in what the money goes to, search for them, and you'll find their financial reports (or see if they're overdue).

  • I hate being pedantic, but at $84 entry, the light is more of an inclusion than free. That aside it should be a fun event.
