There is a fair degree of irony in this post…

      • Your posts are about your own issue with a product / your own experience, mine might be very different

I have bought numerous items with negative outlooks and reviews and had nothing but a positive experience, just remember society is self entitled and people tend to rant and rave when something goes wrong without looking at the big picture

I am pretty sure you're the poster with that Kogan monitor issue, so there is plenty of irony here

    do you own Ozbargain now?

    • -1

Nope, but it is out there, it is a real problem here I want the people that were driven away by bullying to come back.

      • how is a neg vote bullying!!! seriously

        • +1

how is a neg vote bullying!!! seriously

It's related to negative voting due to personal reasons:
          -"I don't like this deal"
-"This doesn't seem like a deal to me"

The above reasons aren't valid for a negative vote.
The only reasons that are valid for negative votes are when major issues with the deal need to be highlighted:
          - The deal is not the cheapest available
          - Defective product [Dangerous item? Doesn't work as described]
          - Major issues with retailer [Fraud? No delivery? Counterfeit seller? Untrustworthy?]

The deal is not the cheapest available - needs to be supported by evidence of other places being better than the deal posted up.
Same as the other two reasons, there should be some supporting comments as to why the negative vote was cast.
If a deal is the market leader, then a negative vote isn't warranted.
Whether it leads the market by a lot or not, that's up to ozbargain members to decide by upvotes, not negative votes, it's not a youtube dislike button.

@cwongtech: It is not the votes that are the problem, if you don't like for a valid reason, then neg it/ Things like the comment at the top of the page, a deliberate misinterpretation of my message to start a witch hunt, the neg raving about the user, the people going of their way to make people feel unwelcome and chastised for try to do something they thought would be helpful. Starting flame wars based on false facts and unqualified opinions (ie: never owned/used a product or store), the writing a paragraph full of innuendo and vitriol intended to belittle not to inform anyone of anything.

Nah, neg votes are for rare occasions.
A deal with less than 10 votes can either be a bad deal or a deal no one has recognised yet.
The way to determine if it's a bad deal is by the comments.

    • +9

So the culture of dogpiling newbies is part of that? Driving away new people means all we see is same old deals. Personally I love nothing better than seeing a new store or website I never knew existed is having a sale, and if others are like me they are subscribed to the same mailing lists and already knew about mosts the daily posts.

  • Can you offer some actual examples of the behaviour you see as problematic?
I see occasional empty vessel comments (and probably make plenty of them) but it seems you are unhappy with a specific type of neg or something?
A lot of unfair negs disappear very quickly as the comment itself is neg voted and others upvote.

b*****g on a deal without a valid reason to neg is just b*****g, not constructive or even useful

As long as it conforms to the OzBargain Voting Guidelines it's permissible. If not, it will be removed.

    Simple enough.

  • I read the post title. Here I am. Ok bye.

    • You contributed a funny, thankyou :)

If I understand you correctly, you are displeased with people neging and not providing a valid reason, or any reason at all, as to why the deal/product was down voted. And or with harsh comments that serve nothing but stop new people from contributing to this site. If so I agree with you competently.

Or is it the pointless, useless, waste of space, waste of bandwidth, waste of storage on the server that's doing nothing but increasing the running cost for Scotty that's displeasing you?

I hope it's not the later cause that's the category that I fall in to :(

    • It is most definitely the first one, but now you mention it, poor Scotty.

Or is it the pointless, useless CHIT CHAT/JOKES COMMENTS THAT CAUSE waste of space, waste of bandwidth, waste of storage on the server that's doing nothing but increasing the running cost for Scotty that's displeasing you?

Personally I have no problem with the "banter" as long as it is informative and/or amusing. It is when it is derogatory that I have an issue. After all, writing to Ozbargain is what some posters consider to be their contribution to social interaction :)

        • Yes, most of my social interaction is done through Ozbargain :)

I agree with the OP. I lurk on this site a fair bit, and add comments on occasions, but I am very reluctant to put up a post for deals I have seen; it just isn't worth the hassle of trying to justify myself. I'm not interested in a $5 piece of plastic tat, but I am interested in getting good deals on quality products. It seems if people do put posts up here like that they have to justify why an item from Coles, that does a completely different function, is just as good, or deal with people who say "this isn't a good deal" without even bothering to explain why they think so. I know a lot of people think that this is just the site "auditing" itself but if this means I miss out on deals I would like to see because people feel bullied for going to the effort of putting something up here, then I find that sad. I do think we need to ensure the site isn't just used for free advertising that "dodgy" products are identified quickly, that genuinely cheaper alternatives are identified and that witty rejoinders are not stemmed; but people should be more supportive of each other.

If we are worried about Scotty's server storage then he can bring in a rule that anything that doesn't get a certain number of "up" votes is automatically deleted after a short time. If people aren't interested in a deal they won't click on it so bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. I'm not sure why anyone bothers to click on something they aren't interested in just to leave a negative comment; after all, generally the titles are pretty explicit.

    • I am very reluctant to put up a post for deals I have seen

You can post via Anonymous Deal Submission

In regards to good deals on quality products, yes it is annoying. Just because something may be cheaper, won't make it a bargain.

Thanks for providing me with the link, but I'm not really concerned about my psuedomyn being on a posting; just that I've taken the effort to find the deal, check no one else has put it up, type the whole thing up, put the links up, edit my spelling mistakes, and then someone complains because the deal isn't perfect for them. My real gripe is there might be deals I'm missing out on because people are put off publishing. I know I've not bothered publishing deals, because I couldn't go through the hassle, so I'm sure there are lot of other people doing the same. However, it does make me happy when people give me positive feedback or something constructive comes from my posts.

My view to comments is they should make a genuine contribution, or be amusing in a non nasty way. A deal might not be someones cup of tea, but it may well be someone elses. Publishing a deal should be something we feel happy about because we are helping others, not something we dread because we are concerned at the reception it will receive.

A bargain is only a bargain if it is good value; not because it is cheap.

Funny enough I raised this exact point with Scotty the other day

I think the whole voting system should be on the deal only
Comments don't need to have voting enabled to be honest

Reputation is built on a community working together

The ironic part is on this website some deals have been borderline fraudulent and I can only imagine the issues it causes retailers who may not want to deal with "ozbargain" in future due to this, the amazon deal recently was one really dodgy bargain (scamming almost) and the drink beer and demand a refund taking advantage of goodwill

thats not what this site is about, its about finding honest bargains, not loopholing stores and creating a complete scene when a store doesn't honour a $1.00 iphone (officeworks) etc

Common sense should apply to posts before they are made public and actually checked

    • Check the deal is valid and not illegal or cause for concern
    • Ensure the deal meets the posting criteria
    • Ensure the deal has enough minimum stock before posting

If a deal is too good to be true then its at the shops discretion if they want to "honour it", the amount of off topic / raging posts going off because a store didn't honour the sale price due to an error etc

I tend to find a lot of the deals here are good but the majority lately have been pretty poor form for rorting small businesses but thats the discretion of the owner of ozbargain

Overall the community is good here but yeah, there needs to be a better system

    Bitches gonna bitch

  • Good feedback from all. Aggressive and angry comments seem to be a common issue for people so as of today we are implementing a new strategy to improve the environment. Have a look at our post.
