I Want to Buy a Car to Use for a Year

Hi,

I want to buy a car to use for a year, selling at the end of the year (at which point I move abroad) aiming for minimal financial loss.

I'm thinking of spending no more than 10K. I have no particular requirements. It will be used to carry kayaks, but light as they are I can't see this being much of a determining factor. I'd prefer efficiency over power and warranty. I have come across a couple late hatchbacks, still under warranty which seems like a good choice. Any suggestions, recommendations welcome, not so much on models.

Thanks.

  • When it comes to strong resale, don't go past the Swift. Just check yourself, they drop only about $1-$1.5k/yr. Economical and you won't (shouldn't) need to do anything over that time

      For carrying Kayaks?

      • To carry 1 yeah ;) OP said hatchbacks, can't think of many 'hatchbacks' that could take 2 side-by-side

Though I also don't know how wide a kayak is lol

        • You can measure them with a piece of string…

Just go for the most pedestrian, easy to find car you can. Something like a Toyota Camry would probably not be too bad. I know of a friend who bought an '07 Camry in 2013 for $10,000 and just sold out for around $7,000 after 4 years, so not too bad at all. They're reliable, a good and practical size and will be fine for carrying your kayaks.

    • Seems about right for me. Bought an 06 Camry in 2010, sold it about a year or so later for $500 less than I bought it for.

  • Thanks for the tips. Kayaks side by side should fit easily, the kayaks being about 65cm. I've also been recommended Corolla and Mazda 2 (the later seems a bit pricey)
