this is still cheaper per gb.

      • +5

Someone might not have the extra $50 to spend to get the space, I just put this comment up for anyone who needed the info

      • and its more expensive if you dont need that much space.

        • +1

There is no such thing as not needing storage space my good sir.

  • +1

WHat do you guys use external SSD for?

    • +3

Boot disk personally. Anytime I use a computer that's not my own I'll boot from an SSD so I have my own programs and files, etc.

    • My wife's work is pretty strict with their filtering and currently don't allow the use of cloud storage. She likes to keep copies of her essential files on a external drive to use with various computers. Non SSD external drives tend to die more quickly. USB sticks are expensive for larger capacities and easier to lose.

      • +5

currently don't allow the use of cloud storage.

Of course, no one has ever been pwned by plugging in a USB drive, what could go wrong. I'm sure the Cloud is more less secure than that!

        • +1

It's not the cloud! It's just somebody else's computer!

    • +1

      Uni, transferring virtual machines.

    • backing up photos while travelling. mostly for the durability of an SSD over mechanical, and the benefit of ssd transfer speeds for RAW files / video every night adds up during longer trips

    • +2

Emergency disk with Sardu, Acronis, Hirens.

Excellent use of these things is as a secure live boot for online banking or Tor Browser to escape Malcom Turdbull's police gaze.

Unsure how well it works, but one could instead get a cheap 240GB drive for ~$100 (ie Intel 535 and an m.2 to USB adaptor for ~$15 to save a little cash… And as an added bonus it's a (slightly) higher rated drive.

Personally went with this (as it ticks all the boxes for me), but for others the above is an option.

    • +7

And as an added bonus it's a (slightly) higher rated drive.

      That's an understatement…

That Intel may not be a perfect alternative for everybody, but as a comparison; the sequential read speed of the Intel (540MB/s) is almost double the Sony "speed" (290MB/s), and Sony doesn't even bother mentioning what exactly their "speed" refers to (eg; random/sequential/etc.)
Sony also specifies a "transfer rate" of "Max. 5Gbps(USB 3.0)", which is basically meaningless to me, because it refers to the USB interface, and in reality has nothing to do with the what the drive will realistically achieve.

Additionally, Sony neglects to quote WRITE speed (and latency, etc), which is a warning sign for me… Do they even know and/or is it embarrassingly slow ?!? I have had some frustratingly slow Sony flash-based products in the past.

Also note that the Intel product has a 5 year warranty and many of the other big players like Sandisk, Samsung, Toshiba, Crucial, etc offer 5 or even 10 year warranties on some of their products - since Sony doesn't specify a warranty period, you would have to assume 1 year.

A lot of el-cheapo drives give vague or missing figures, because if you knew the real ones you wouldn't buy them ;-)

      • +2

Thought the same at first but benchmarks of it show average results for a lower tier SSD - it's not just cheap flash.

        http://en.ocworkbench.com/tech/review-of-sony-256gb-usb-3-0-…

As with warranty, all listings I find state 3 years. Sony doesn't really list it anywhere I can see though…

        • +1

Interesting read - The Sony is still a bit slower than the Intel with a (probably) worse warranty, but the drive is perhaps not as bad as Sony seems to indicate it is ;-)

I wonder why Sony is sometimes so bad at promoting it's products?
It concerns me, because I have been burnt a few times, when they drop support for underperforming products, they have done a mediocre job of promoting.
(It just goes to show why Sony could be considered more of a "consumer" seller in the SSD market, rather than one of the "big names")

I would interested to hear your opinions on it.
…and hopefully the associated software isn't too intrusive, and doesn't install a rootkit - hehehe

      • AFAIK TRIM command is not supported over USB with 99% of chipsets which would result in an eventually slow drive with limited life span.

How important is wear leveling with M2 SSDs? I know with very few SSDs the drive itself is able perform this however most not-for-purpose drives require the OS to to handle "TRIMming" which doesn't work over USB.

  • Very interested in getting something like this, or building a 240gb one, but for my Wii U. I'm currently running a rather overkill 3tb my book and hardly use anything. I was using the portable drives but despite a y cable adapter they caused issues eventually. Would I be safe to assume something like this powered off a single usb Port would draw less power than your typical 2.5 mechanical? I don't care for speed. It's more reliability I'm after. Don't want to download my games again… Who knows how long Nintendo will leave that option open too.

DO people still buy Sony IT products?

  • +1

Buy a 2.5" enclosure and create your own external SSD with an older drive you no longer use.

  • +1

Those password requirements are absolutely revolting.

    • Yeah. I wasn't a fan either. There's no way I'll remember mine.

      • +1

At work we have just as tough password requirements, except it is required to be changed every 28 days. And you can't reuse a password you've already used before.

This is meant to make passwords more secure, except it leads to people writing down their passwords on post it notes, ironically having the reverse effect and making it very unsecure.

    • I feel like the last thing you want is a weak password for a Sony-related account…

      • +2

Doesn't matter how strong it is if all of Sony's records get hacked again.

        • +1

Surely Sony wouldn't be allowing raw passwords to exist on file. They would be hashed these days, which is why they're probably asking for obscene requirements - trying to stop would-be teenagers brute forcing accounts.

          Anywho, no matter. Solid deal

        • @fleetfeather:

You don't need brute force, it would appear you just need to wait for their website to glitch again - name, address, CC details, order history, you name it - last time it happened a few months back, the phrase "leaking like a sieve" comes to mind…

  • +1

Is the lack of TRIM likely to adversely affect the drive over time?

  • My order from the 2/02 arrived yesterday to North QLD.
