    Old TVs with old tech.

    • -1

Prove it is old tech? Compare the ram and processor then. It’s the same as competitors latest models in the same price range.

      • +2

I suspect it's the Full Array LED vs Mini-LED debate in terms of tech and price being paid for.

        • TCL have taken the market share in the LED segment. It no longer makes any sense buying LED from any other manufacturer, especially when it's FALD.

          • @Maths Debater: Yes that's true.
I was originally in the market for the X90L 75" but the price vs the new TCL C8K (with the massive deals recently) made the TCL a no brainer.

In saying that the X90L even with the older FALD setup - apparently it compares and competes very well against the TCL mini-leds even if its the new tech on some comparison videos and websites i've seen; each year though TCL is moving further away.

Sony's Bravia 3-5-7 apparently aren't as good in their entry of the mini-LEDs as well from what I've seen and bravia 9 is OLED territory.

If the X90L was selling for ~1.7k for 75" and TCL C7/8K was the same price - i'd very likely end up with the Sony honestly.

            • @atimuslol: Personally I prefer Sony TV's…but TCL owns too much of the supply chain for anyone else really to be competitive. The new C8K models firmly trounce the X90L (in testing/paper) from a panel perspective.

            • @atimuslol: How’s the build quality on the Chinese TCL?

              • @msjb: To be honest, mines still sitting in the box since i'm moving houses in hopefully a month - did not want to take it out and deal with transport and potentially smashing it. I bought it early because it was a deal too good to be missed. (2080 with 500 gift card).

I did check them out in store and I think they look quite good and feels nice for TV's in this price range. I won't be able to confidently comment on it for the time being though.

Reviewers rave on about the C8K though so fingers crossed I can trust those reviewers.

            • @atimuslol: The current Bravia 3 & 5 are generally considered pretty lacklustre, yes. The Bravia 7 however is quite well regarded and oft considered a better price/performance ratio than the Bravia 9.

              • +1

@Cyan9: I did look into some comparisons and look at the Bravia 7 in person - while I do like it i'm not too much of an expert to be able to make a structured comparison - however side by side with the TCL in stores - they look remarkably similar (though in stores they don't run fair demo videos across the board) - the price though had me wondering.

I definitely prefer Sony's software with googleTV - my brother has the older X90K and it's rock solid across the board even after all this time.

My friend has the C6k and software has a few hiccups - albeit the C6k is quite older (I haven't looked into C6K vs C8K though).

My older Samsung QLED (not QLED Neo) TizenOS makes me vomit.

      • You can get Samsung/LG OLED, especially 55", even cheaper than this.

      • +4

I'm the type of person that would pay the Sony TV premium as I believe their processing and smart TV features are far superior without having to deal with third party dongles, but agree the X90 series is now old tech and you really shouldn't be paying thousands for regular LED tech anymore.

    • Sony golden days are long gone, no creativity, too conservative, and dodgy business practices.

What are you talking about? Please elaborate with evidence to back up your statements. Otherwise it’s simply fake news and scare tactics.

        • -6

I don’t have to prove anything, and many agree with my statement. People know what to do with their money. Period.

Great TV. Our second one was a 75" refurb on eBay and has been flawless for the ~3 months we've had it so far. Looks and seems brand new.

    • They are seriously underrated televisions.

    • On Sony's Ebay (I'm not sure about some reviews because its a hit or miss as they shared sony support is basically non-existent but I heard otherwise in my family situation with Sony TV where they've been really helpful) you can get the "box damaged" X90Ls for a very good deal especially when they kick of 15/17 (or 20/22 if lucky) off TV deals.

I had a 75" X90L in my cart for ~1750 before but was on the fence due to some peoples comments on Sony eBay support - many reported getting basically new TVs so it's a punt for anyone interested.

  • +4

There’s a limited number of the 75” and 85” versions of these “box damaged” on Sony ebay for approx $1000 less, if you’re into that.

+1 for "box damaged" Sony TVs. I bought a 55 inch X90L for the bedroom and it arrived in perfect condition (box wasnt even damaged) and has been working flawlessly for over a year now.

  • How is there still stock of this model? Is this like an infinite glitch or something?

  • I didnt realise there were so many Sony haters on OzB.

    • -2

They hate it because they can't afford it.

      • They hate it because they can't afford it.

Or could it be that it is stupid to pay at these prices when you can get better deals + newer tech for much more cheaper prices..

    • +1

it cos Sony no longer as good of brand for electronics/TVs compared to their older glory days
and their prices are not that good value for money (what you pay and what you get) compared to competitors

      • theyre still better value for money than samsung & LG

        • -1

theyre still better value for money than samsung & LG

          not really

there was a previous deal for LG OLED C5 55" $1690
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/924727

Even current LG B5 OLED is better than these LCDs

TCL is also a much better brand in terms of value for money + newer tech…
I have seen TCL MiniLED TVs in store and they look really good (close to OLED quality)

Sony glory days are long gone when there is better value for money competitors nowadays..
Sony also continuous keeping their PS5 close to same price (and also increased prices) since launch of their console is ridiculous…

    • +3

I didnt realise there were so many Sony haters on OzB.

There’s now a whole new club of haters because their price error XM6 headphones orders got cancelled LOL.
Disclaimer: my XM6 order got cancelled too but that won’t stop me from buying Sony in the future… when the right deals come along.

Might be plenty of social media bots slagging brands to promote their own brand? I always have said do your own research. Look at multiple independent reviews online and on YouTube. Check prices online. And most importantly: trust your own judgment, not the salespersons.

    • +2

Check prices online. And most importantly: trust your own judgment, not the salespersons.

You sound like a saleperson for Sony …

This is ozbargain (not Sony Website) where people have seen better deals posted for other brands and newer tech (not LCD)

Paying for LCD TV at these prices is stupid

      • -2

I’m no salesperson. But I am sure surprised how delusional people are thinking the other brands provide better picture processing technologies. Sony is still the best in the business and the benchmark all other brands are trying to reach. Watch Vincentt on his YouTube HDTV Test channel. I’m actually excited for Sony’s upcoming RGB LED technology they’re working on. Please enjoy: https://youtu.be/axP1nZwHErU?si=vtFVyAfgH3OMopRR

And the ram and processor is the same size as current televisions in the same price point. I recommended it to my sister, she bought the 75”. The picture is excellent and the apps and interface is snappy and quick loading. These are still fantastic televisions and still very relevant for those that want excellent picture, colour reproduction and all Google TV apps operating fast and seamlessly - within an extremely competitive price point.

    • Wow had no idea how bad their TVs are now.

Calm down mate, read the reviews

          • @KirKoloft: They're not all related to their TVs.

            • @Maths Debater: Didn't you read the ones related to their shitty TVs and customer service?

              • @KirKoloft: Check out the shitty feedback regarding LG, Samsung, Hisense, TCL, Toshiba, JVC, Kogan, Ffalcon, etc.. ALL TV’s on Product Reviews have shitty feedback. It is NOT isolated on one single brand.

Now go read LG and Samsung reviews. Just as bad.

I don't think Product Reviews is a good gauge for a brand.

      • Exactly. Imagine basing your purchase off Product Review of all websites.

  • My biggest issue with this TV is how reflective the screen is. Any lights remotely close, or even not close are clearly visible on the screen. Dark scenes particularly bad.

    • This is completely false. I have spent plenty of time viewing the 75” model at my sisters and it does not have any of the issues you’re suggesting.

      • I have the 85 on my wall in my family room and watch it every day. Picks up light reflections from the kitchen quite badly.

Rtings rating for reflected light/direct reflections is 5.4/10 with the description:

"The Sony X90L has poor direct reflection handling. It barely reduces the intensity of lamps, wall lights, or windows opposite the screen when watching content or playing video games, which is distracting."

I'm sure your sister's works better though …..

    • I have the X90J and the reflections are awful. That's pretty bad if they haven't rectified this issue by now.

  • +3

I have an old 75" X95J, and the motion processing and picture quality blows my 55" S90D (QD-OLED) out of the water.

Better tech doesn't always equate to a better experience.

    • but doesn't OLED gives better picture quality (true black) than your old TV?

Post some pics of comparison in same lighting condition

    • The motion processing I can believe but there's no reality where a FALD panel can ever look better than a QD-OLED.

      • +1

Unless you're viewing static images, motion processing rules above all else in terms of the user experience and perceived picture quality. Blacker blacks are not the only metric for "better picture quality".

The X95J doesn't provide the same true black as an OLED, but the overall picture quality is more natural, cinematic and appeases me far more than the OLED. Even the colour is nicer on the Sony FALD.

I also use an AW3425DW QD-OLED for my work and gaming monitor.

I still prefer the FALD Sony.

  • +3

I bought the 75-inch X90L about two months ago. All up it cost me around $1830. It was $2199 on Sony's website. I left it in the cart for a while so I got an offer for 10% off, and then CashRewards had 10% cashback as well. Luckily for me, CashRewards closed soon after and the cashback balance has already been paid.

The TV had been ~$2000 a couple of times last year, and I missed an opportunity where JB HiFi and The Good Guys were clearing them out at the same as doing 15% off TVs which would have been sub-$2000.

I also considered the TCL C7K/C8K and the Sony Bravia 7. Read reviews. Looked at TVs in stores. None of them are "bad" TVs. What swayed me in the end was that I am not sure about TCLs reliability at this stage and I have had good past experiences with Sony TVs (as have other people I know).

    I'm happy with the purchase.

The summary here is that it is a good TV but I wouldn't be paying for $2350 + delivery for it. It pays to wait.

    • How is it with dealing with reflections? I have the X90J and it's really bad. I love the picture quality and motion processing etc but the reflective screen is a real pain.

      • -1

My sister has this tv in 75” and it’s in a bright room. Reflections are minimal and being full array it’s quite bright with excellent viewing angles.

      • +1

It is awful with reflections. My 85 is poor at best. I think the Rtings review says it all, but you need to scroll down to the section on 'direct reflections' and scores it 5.4 out of 10.

I would not buy again in hindsight.

      • +2

No issues but that may be because there are no direct light sources on it. All the downlights in the room are recessed. There are windows/sliding doors in the room but they lead to an alfresco.
