In the event you do take up this offer, just drive around the block of the dealer. Less walking when it decideds to transform into a road block.

Would you like asbestos to go with it?

These cars are no worse then the original kia cars. They always had issues usually head gaskets.
Hyundai where okay at the start but they where using Mitsubishi engines.had issues with other stuff and still do.

Lol people giving German cars praise when the Mercedes where made by Ssangyong?

    • Lol people giving German cars praise when the Mercedes where made by Ssangyong?

Pretty sure Mercedes weren't made by Ssangyong but rather used old platforms from MB. Which was sold thru MB dealerships as a different badge.

      • They designed and build the car for Mercedes it was a partnership Ssangyong got to use the Mercedes dealerships and Mercedes got a SUV range out of it.

    • Lol and to think the problem engine in the Great walls / Haval (petrols) was the 4G69 Mitsubishi engine. To be fair the engine is fair, Haval had the Gaskets that failed. The only fault with the engine was the cooling lines for the block and the piston are close, meaning a high quality Gasket is require. GW / Haval missed that meeting I guess

These cars are just as good as beamers and Merc"s stick with Japanese cars, most reliable.

That they are not.. Yet. The engines/ drive train are under powered, yet use up too much fuel. The electronics arent refined and either too bright, too dull, or dont work every time (door locks). The panels rust faster than average etc.. But they are half the cost.

Toyota started with some entry level tin box es. Now they have a thing called a 'Hilux'. The first Hyundai Excels were a real POS. Future generations became car of the year. A company called Samsung made some cheap ordinary cameras and phones not that long ago (I owned one and was ridiculed accordingly) Many people now proudly own a "Great Wall esq" Samsung phone.

Back to the car in question, They probably belong as cheap starter farmer, tradie cars that can be bought new so can be depreciated to nothing via tax deductions and then moved on as soon as the warranty is just about up.

Keep an eye on em, at this point they aren't there just yet.

A lot of comments here from people have never driven or owned a great wall. Mate has one and has put 250,000km on it, I use it often to carry fruit and other stuff.. Sure it might not ride like a BMW but its pretty good value if you want a simple car.

We are talking china from today, not 10 years ago.

oh look an article from 5 years ago

youd be surprised how many cars are still driving around with drum brakes with asbesto shoes lol

        • A leopard can't change its spots.

I will be more likely to purchase a chinese made car, under a jap or european design/QA

        • @googleyahoo69:

asbestos used in Australian production cars was only banned in early 2000s

there is probably a few million cars running around doing school runs every day that have asbestos parts (think of the children!)

article is purely fear mongering, was only an asbestos gasket, not exactly brake pads/shoes that make it airborn etc

          @Lenny Pepperidge:

Yes, understand your comment. This is one of the many examples. (May not be the best one). Plenty other ones.

Sometime ago… The trains delivered by the Chinese to Kiwiland were also found with asbestos.

It was recently been discovered that Chinese construction firms have been using imported materials containing asbestos.

Until the next (or maybe two) generation of Chinese studied overseas, and bring that mentality back to China, (not sure if it will take longer, looking at the Chinese students from mainland living in AU just like asif they are in China) China is still China.

This comment is contraversal, and prob not permitted by the ozb site rules.

        • @googleyahoo69:
German is better…but not Japan. And, when those companies which joint ventured to get in China…it become much more complicated… the made in China is actually designed by your "High Quality" companies, and passed by the QA they have deployed. Well, just saying, next time when you blame made in China is cheap shit, u have a better idea who to blame.

Just plan urself a buz trip to the Chinese factories, believe me, you could get everything there, from the the top high end stuffs to the total trash but still profitable, just…you got what you paid for.

          @OZen:

Who has said that made it China is no good? That person is not me. The phone I am typing from is made in China.

People in general are too caught up with "made in China".

Ooooh, btw, you could always get urself a heart attack by browsing the productsafety.gov.au, when u look at how many quality cars are getting recall…airbag time bomb or asbestos, guess which one could kill you first? LoL

guess which one could kill you first?

I'll take a guess at The New Mustang thanks!

Lol @ the movie, hated by both side (Chinese and the Hollywood)
But the GW and Aus market is like a downward spiral atm, I have witness how GW sell its SUV brand in the Chinese domestic market, call Havval or Haval in Aus, tbh it's on good price with better gears than Hyundai's SF and kluger, but just our mind keep telling us that Made in China is 120% cheap shit and it should be cheap, and those Chinese don't like the Korea have to rely on the foreign market to survive, maybe Aus market not even a spot in their market radar, so just "sell them the cheapest shit they wanted", maybe both sides change their mindset could bring some hope, but right now the downward spiral is strong…

Btw, the SUV that GW trying to push into Aus market, it is called Haval, I have went for a test drive last year, almost bought one, the only thing I don't like is they have put a 2L 4cyl diesel on a 7seat large SUV then advertising its 4WD off-road capability….

Anyway, give them some time, and we should also keep an open-mind. Then later, we could always have the more the better options when we are picking our new cars, and other goods too. This is the bargain we should make for ourselves, I reckon.

  • Say what you want about them……..Still safer than a new mustang!

    • Is it safe in the sense that it cant get up to dangerous speeds fast?

      • It's not the speed, it's the stopping!
Depending on the model, some have an ancap safety rating double that of the ford.

  • I drive it once, the clutch was not very good, the engine was underpowered, otherwise fine. GW are not as bad as people expected. While Au people are generous rich and would not mind paying extra money for more reliable brands.

  • I know the 1st gen turbo diesel was a bosch 2l with bosch 6 speed manual behind it and i have seen some footage of the great walls doing some 4wding and seemed to stand their ground.

Bloke i worked with had the 2 seater ute and seemed to be good when loaded with about a tonne of gear in the back, sure it didn't break the land speed record but did its job for the 3 years i was there.

  • Hmm I wonder if any OzB people have scored the tix yet.
