Sony Noise MDR-1000x Cancelling Headphones $499 @ Sony Kiosk (Chatswood NSW)

150

Saw this good deal at the Sony Kiosk Chatswood NSW. Almost as good as the JB Hifi special from last year.

Hopefully some stores price match this (can't find deal online).

These can be tried on and tested at the Sony Kiosks using your own phone/music which is not the case at JB where they are (stupidly) locked down to play very bad (IMO) music samples and you can't test making a call.

That's an incredibly good price for these newly released headphones.

I better book a flight overseas so I can claim 1/11 of the price as TRS. In before someone said it.

    • Yup it's a good price. I paid $493 previously less TRS.

Why such a high price? Is there something exceptional about the noise cancelling?
Sony don't have much of a name for high quality audio from headphones, and for that price you would be able to find some 'real' headphones?

You're paying for the noise cancelling technology not only the audio quality for music! Rule of thumb is the equivalent audio quality from Normal headphones should be available for approx half the price of the NC models. If you don't need NC by all means save money and get better regular cans…

        • Yes I paid that premium over QC35 for these features:

          • Better NC as I travel a lot
          • Better sound quality
          • NC can be turned off completely
          • NC can be turned off temporarily by placing my hand over the right ear cup
          • NC ambient voice mode - allows you to hear boarding announcements, or conversations
          • NC ambient sound mode - allows you to hear the traffic when walking outside
          • Swipe gestures - up/down for volume, left/right to change tracks, double tap to play/pause/answer calls, etc. Seems gimmicky at first but I ended up using them quite a fair bit.

I only use NC headphones in noisy environments to drown out the background clutter. At home where it's nice and quiet I use my DT880 600Ω and TH-X00 Purpleheart. Unfortunately there's no one product that can do both NC and great SQ as they are two very different products designed for different usages and environments.

        • @m9:

Sound quality is subjective…they both sound very good to me.

I actually ended up going with the Bose as phone calls are handled much better by the Bose than the Sony…and I make/receive a lot of calls.

        • Why such a high price? Is there something exceptional about the noise cancelling?

Yes. They beat the Bose QC35 in ANC.

Also have more features than the Bose, such as touch controls and covering one cup to hear when someone is trying to talk to you.

Sony don't have much of a name for high quality audio from headphones

MA900s are very highly regarded. As for ANC BT headphones, this is the one to beat right now.

and for that price you would be able to find some 'real' headphones?

I'm not sure what you mean.

Are the MDR100 on special as well?

These type of headphones are useless for pop music.

    • +1

Why would they be useless? Do you really think headphones are specifically designed for an individual music genre?
What about blues, classical or heavy metal? How do u tell? Is it on the box? Are there separate models for your music taste?

      • +4

        Well, they are noise cancelling.
