It is essentially piracy, and thats not a valid option when deals on software or movies is posted

Based on last year, there was a big discount come All-Stars weekend, so I would be hesitant to sign up at the moment

you only need the VPN/Proxy for the sign up process (i've used the getflix one in the past)
after that you can watch without it
I've got a lifetime PureVPN subscription. Cost $70 or something but I use it for everything including piratebay on my Synology NAS 8-)
With the VPN, do you have to use that all the time - for normal surfing, and for watching games … or do you only need it for buying the actual initial pass??

That's right. Only needed for the buying. I watch it like normal on Apple TV, Phone or wherever I am on a computer.. no need for a VPN.
I have a lifetime VPN subscription because it's handy for things like blocked websites at work (not just Facebook, things I actually need), pirateBay and torrents and when prices for things are cheaper if you buy from a different country like NBA leauge passes, Origin games, etc.
