nothing compared to the good old days of JBHIFI east keilor with their LP giveaways. one box everyday for weeks on end. it was rubbish, but it was free.

    • +5

I miss that cramped little store. :(

      • +3

The original store, after he moved his business from out of his garage! One then two then three shopfronts. Takeaway from than Chinese place a couple of doors away (BYO containers), playing on the swings across the road…. 1982!

    • I remember picking up 'Never Mind the Bollocks' on CD there for just $2. Still possibly the best bargain I've ever nabbed.

  • Can anyone confirm if this sale or similar is going on at any other JB Hi-Fi's?

    • I was told this was the only one, at least around Brisbane.

      • Thanks mate

        • Saw the same price and setup in Chadstone (VIC) this evening, so have a look at your nearest store

        • @tekkrohnz: thanks tekkrohnz. I've updated the description to reflect that others may indeed be running the promo.

    • I saw a 2.99 clearance/sale at chatswood.

    • +1

the Geelong Vic store had the same sale today

    • Belconnen ACT has one stand as well

    • Carindale are setup with a big 99c sign.

    • Bourke St store had a similar sale when I visited 3 days ago

      Doncaster SC, Vic has them.

A dying format… I still don't mind cds in the car though. (Old school I know but my Spotify Bluetooth link up doesn't sound as good.)

    • Yes sadly. For some reason people are moving away from CDs that literally cannot get any better in audio quality to vinyl which is equivalent to 12 bits of fidelity and claiming they sound better :p

Then there's the 24 192 download crowd that believe they getting a better sound even though they're usually getting an equivalent or slightly inferior sound :) (Meaning some of them may experience audio artifacts due to playback equipment not that it's capable of bettering CD sound).

      • +4

The vast majority of people don't own sound equipment good enough to tell the difference. Those $300 jbl bluetooth speakers are as good as its going to be played through or the stock sound system in their Mazda 3.

heck, i have an integra/klipsch setup in my dining room and i'm not sure that even qualifies

      • No there is a difference, and it comes down to the mastering.

The CD mix is (usually) mastered to be compressed as loud as possible. So even though they have 96dB of dynamic range for a CD, it's all smashed to the top.

That doesn't work so well for cutting vinyl so the vinyl mixes are usually not compressed as hard. so even though the dynamic range available is less, more is used than for CDs.

      True, but…
      1) You got yourself a very nice quality (technically!) music - uncompressed. Do what ever you want with it
      2) You own it. And you can pass it on. And it will not die with you. And you can still listen to it even if you will not pay any more money.
      3) It legalizes your rights to the music - i.e. despite the ambiguity of the copyright law, Apple will allow you to use that to provide you with your the most favorite format (crappy MP3) of the music you own on a CD.

So I think it is a great deal as long as you can find CDs with music you like.

      • Another negative of digital downloads are the injections of audible watermarks by record labels. On a high quality sound system, or even a low quality one if you listen for it, you can recognise these and they become really annoying. CDs usually don't have these. Read more about it here with some examples: http://www.mattmontag.com/music/universals-audible-watermark

I would've thought the weird resurgence of demand for "vintage" stuff like LPs and NES Classics convinced people that these will also one day magically be $99 rather than 99 cents :P

  • +1

I'm busy ripping my CD collection so I can put it some of it on my iPhone. I rarely listen to CDs anymore.

  • +1

I was in the Geelong store today and they had the same deal "CDs from 99c"

    • +2

@rep, please change your title to "from $0.99¢" as per uploaded photo.

Browns plains jb only had Nana Mouskori and Tom Jones @.99

      • +3

Thanks - notified mod and should be updated shortly

  • As I have slightly obscure tastes the only new CD's I ever buy these days are from JB's clearance section. In recent times I've picked up albums from Jeff Martin, Eyvind Kang and Circus Devils for $5 each and a Com Truise synthwave album for $6.70 when JB had a 20% off CD's sale too.

    • +1

Do they still have their clearance sections? I remember years ago they would have them in every category and would get some really good deals but haven't seen them in ages

  • +7

Nothing beats the feeling of going to record store and browsing stacks and stacks of CDs.

  • Whats a CD?

    • +2

      Coaster for your Drink

  • I want to listen to music on the go. Is there a deal for a decent discman? One with skip protection? Also, looking for an adaptor when in the car.

    • +2

I think you should check the 90s/early 00s section.

      why>> is this a prank..?

  • -8

    spotify

  • Also at Warringah Mall NSW - includes multiple copies of Green Day 21st Century Breakdown special edition

    • Green Day 21st Century Breakdown special edition

      Were they $0.99 each?

      • +1

yes. 5 or 6 copies on Saturday afternoon

        • Cheers, got one at my local!

FYI, the limited edition is presented in a hardcover book with the disc in the back.

    • That's a bloody good deal those limited edition CD book versions were about $30-$35 when I bought it from JB when the album first came out same as the American Idiot ones. I didn't bother with the trilogy album ones which incidentally JB decided not to stock and weren't available here.

  • Carindale is heaps of stock too at 99c

    who wants cds anymore? :/

  • +2

I still buy CD's all the time. Great to have a physical collection.

  • Got CDs, but Where to find my CD player

    • Got a relatively modern DVD player or even better BluRay player? Modern DVD/BD players are much better than old redbrick cd players. Try it out. CD Players are one of the most (after expensive cables) marked up pieces of hifi with people justifying their purchases on super duper HQ DAC and some such..

      • I reckon this aint true. A good Hifi CD player like a Denon or Marantz (or better) will sound better than a cheap nobrand dvd or bluray (assuming you decode in the device).

        • I didn't say cheap nobrand dvd/bd. I said a modern dvd/bd player (sony, panasonic, samsung) made in the recent years will sound the same if not better than old redbook players. I have tried this myself and currently using my Sony BD player (can also play SACD) that sounded better than an old Marantz cd player. In fact the only old cd player that I really liked was an Akai (Japan made) cd player from the 90s. It sounded great. I'm speaking based on my experience and also have read this view in forums where this myth is dispelled. My pet peeves are $300+ cables (so called interconnect) that somehow brings the system alive.

  • CDs last forever hard river don't.

    • +2

      Well…what's a "hard river" though?

  • Couldn't pass up to opportunity to buy "Cum On Feel the Boyz" by the Torpedo Boyz.

  • No 99c section at Elizabeth, SA just the standard clearance section and picked up Devo's Greatest Hits for $5.

    • No 99c section at Munno Para, SA either, figures really.

  • Picked up "Ministry of Sound: Addicted To Bass 2013" today for 99c! 3 discs! 66 songs for 99c! Not bad!

  • Just saw that there is a 99c rack at the Parramatta Westfield branch. About 6 rows of CDs.

  • FWIW, this 99c deal is going at JB in Adelaide CBD.

    For 99c each picked up:

    311 - From Chaos
Buried Inside - Spoils of Failure
Dead Shape Figure - The Grand Karoshi
The Devil Rock Four - First In Line
All Ends - A Road To Depression
