    Quality post, thank you!

    • Perfect description.

  • +1

Good post. Very tempted with the Marantz NR1607 but only gotten the NR1604 3 years ago. Maybe wait another year.

  • +8

Please let people know that no local warranty

Also Marantz Aust (AKA Qualifi) wont even sell you spare parts even if you wanted to pay for them out of warranty as they check the serial numbers for grey imports

Making an informed decision is important before spending $673

    • +3

I asked Amazon before when I bought my Marantz 3 years ago and they said no issue with the manufacturer's warranty. They will cover it including postage to U.K.

My Marantz is still going strong else I have pulled the trigger to get this model.

    • +1

My Marantz SR6007 got hit by a storm recently. All the HDMI ports stopped working. I called Qualify and was quoted around 400-600 forthe HDMI board with around a 6 week wait if they can get it.

Just not sure if I should get it repaired, Buy new one cheaper imported or get new one locally with full warranty? SR5011 includes all the features of the older SR6007 except phono so probably don't need the SR6011.

Haven't really shopped around but the best price I have found locally is $1400 for SR5011 and $1900 for SR6011.

    • +2

Well the parts prices are probably way out of reach anyhow, even if you could meet the vendor's customer criteria.

Try sourcing the parts from Marantz distributors in europe, japan or the us. Probably cheaper than the local lot anyhow. Let others on OzB know the arrangement so the grey market can get the support it so richly deserves!

  • +1

You have to dig deep to get basic info like dimensions:
    Maximum Dimensions (W x D x H) in mm 440 x 376 x 105
Looking for something like this but max 300mm depth to fit :(

    • +3

been there, tried that. This and the denons are as shallow as you'll find. The solution I've used twice now is to cut the back out of the entertainment unit with jigsaw. another issue: just make sure there is at least 10cm of open air above the receiver as well, or it may over heat.

      • +3

Its a converted fireplace cutting the back out will upset some people.

        • +1

Hmmm, ok. Place the receiver in another room and run some long cords through wall or ceiling? Harmony one remote to control it.

Trying to think, because there are no decent receivers that shallow.

    • "Looking for something like this but max 300mm depth to fit"

There's no such thing, I've looked too just like Andrew above ! You'll need to either move your receiver, or remove material from the back of your fireplace to make it deeper.

      • I kind of find it odd that these devices are still as big as they are (I'm looking at a slim line tower PC on my work desk that is smaller then this receiver). I'm sure most of it is just for stature/appearance, and I guess 'compatibility' with existing equipment 'stacking'. With flat panel tv's being basically all people buy and less need for a deep table /stand below it you would think there would be a market for a slimmer design.. heck the same size box but oriented vertically would be more workable for me (could have a bigger e-ink screen on the front and ports on the back could be more spaced out).

Still no DAB as standard on these things. Come on Marantz and others, it's 2017!

    • +3

I always assumed DAB was dead in the water and streaming stations was going to be the future for radio.

    • +5

I'm also disappointed with no dab ….. have the denon 1300 from Amazon germany and the internet radio is great, but DAB would have been nice so I could get rid of my DAB tuner.

Not everyone streams internet radio just like not everybody streams TV.

  • Thanks OP. Was waiting to buy the Denon 1300W for the last 6 months but couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the Marantz NR1607 for this price. Hi Rez Audio, Stereo PreOuts, 7.2 Sweet Deal!

  • +2

I have previously bought an Onkyo from amazon.de. The manufacturer did a "voluntary" recall (i.e. would have had a class action on their hands if they didn't) but amazon wouldnt assist with return shipping. luckily, i have a brother in law in london and sent it back with him at christmas… next christmas i got it back. I bought an older model Integra while it was away on ebay for $80.

You do lose local support completely. The local distys know they're (profanity) you, so they won't assist at all if your unit fails, even at your cost. As soon as they know its a grey import they will tell you to take a long walk off a short pier.

Given most ONKYO units have shitty hdmi boards, i'd be giving them a wide berth. AFAIK, they're still producing them using the same boards they always have which end up faulty eventually

    • +1

Some older Onkyo receivers were effected by faulty HDMI chips supplied by the chip manufacturer. This issue was rectified (chips replaced in product design) several years ago. Impacted units have extended warranty coverage through the local distributor, supported by the manufacturer. Current products are not affected by the issue caused by faulty HDMI chips.

      • I must admit i'm not up to date on the current lineup, but the local disty wouldn't touch grey imports for this issue.

I do recall when the issue first came to light, they were still selling units that had the same board

  • Thanks OP, I've been pining for a deal on the NR1607. And I got Amazon to refund shipping so got it even cheaper!

    • +1

How were you able to get them to refund shipping? thats 52GBP that you got them to refund, Amazing!

    • Yes, how did you get them to refund shipping?

  • Got one. Amazing unit and amazing price. Needed a slimline and I purchased this as soon as it came out locally. Around $1000.

  • +5

Many of them marked "can't be posted to Australia", how do you post them to Australia then?

    • same question

      • +2

Usually there are multiple sellers on Amazon for the same product. Only Amazon.com/uk post to Australia.

This item when it had limited stock posted to Australia when Amazon.uk was selected as the seller. Now the Marantz is on Pre-Order.

See right of the page, where it shows other sellers, select amazon.co.uk and you should be able to place the order (when its available)

        • +1

Thanks, I just ordered marantz cd6006+ pm6006 instead, they are nearly out of stock too,960 aud in total, maybe enough to buy one of them in local stores,if there is a sale.

        • Thanks, sk280. I had been looking at the same amp as hsinking and couldn't work out how to order it from amazon.

  • +2

Warranty question is important. Worth noting that local distributors are not subsidiaries of the manufacturer companies (Denon/Marantz/Onkyo/Pioneer. In all these cases, cost of providing warranty on goods sold locally is borne by the distributor - and must be factored into sale price (when selling to dealers). Servicing grey-imported product is not provided for by the distributors, who have contracts with the manufacturers to support what they have sold. It's commercially necessary to refer un-funded warranty/support issues back to the place where the warranty responsibility has been provided for.

    • +4

with the price differences you could easily afford to send back for repairs and return postage back to Australia or buy a second unit as spare,

      these aren't 10-15% savings …… its 40%.

my denon AVR1300 came from Germany VERY fast shipping

  • +1

Excellent prices. I bought an Onkyo TX-NR636 about 12 months ago, refurbished, for $739 thinking it was a great deal.

An amazing receiver, no issues. I would definitely recommend getting the TX-NR656 at this price.

A word of advice: Do not buy the cheapest, nastiest quality hdmi cables. Don't spend a bunch, just don't get terrible quality cables as you may end up with drop outs and tearing your hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with your new receiver.

    • +2

Not to worry you, but I'd steer clear of Onkyo. Their HDMI boards fail frequently and they run very hot. From what I read, This still has not changed with the current line up of Onkyo as well.

      • Had a Denon 2100 HDMI board fail on me, luckily in warranty, Receivers aren't like they once were.

      • I agree 200% (two units gone) . Have a denon now and it is so much better in every way

        • +1

Yep. Back when FULL HD came out many years ago, I got the Onkyo TX-SR578 and had for around 6 months. Whilst I had no issues with my HDMI, the unit would run SO HOT that you could fry an egg. It heated up fast too. So its not surprising that those components give up after being constantly cooked. Back then, I still remember contemplating a FAN mod at the back before coming to my senses and flogging it off on the bay. I lost only $50 after 6 months of use, so was okay with that.

        • @sk280:
"Whilst I had no issues with my HDMI, the unit would run SO HOT that you could fry an egg."

Yep. I'm glad I replaced mine with a Yammy.

To be fair, it was nice to have it running in winter. :p

        • @sk280: yeah my old unit was enclosed so had quite a few pc fans back there. Actually worked great.

      • Onkyo's HDMI boards since the TX-NRx2x series have been fine (former owner of a TX-NR636 here; I upgraded to the Denon X1300W in the last Amazon.de deal) and have not suffered the widespread systemic failures that plagued earlier series.

The bigger issue with Onkyo is that their EQ software, while getting better with each generation of receivers, is still not as good as Audyssey.

        • Have not had any issues with the TX-NR636. I had an issue with dropouts but this was due to a 50c HDMI cable, replaced and all is well.

The unit doesn't get very hot either. So far so good!

        • Thats good to hear about Onkyo. X1300w is amazing value for money. It has Audyessey MultiEQ XT over the Marantz NR1607 which has only MultiEQ. I wanted to get the Denon 1300W but saw that the Marantz NR1607 has front pre-outs (although not documented) which I'm hoping I can connect my fronts to the Power Amp via the NR1607.

    1. What kind of adapter is required to get this working in AUS?
eg Transformer or just a travel plug?

    2. are there any regional limitations on the device? i.e will all radio stations work etc?>

    3. How long do you think it will take to receive unit after back order?

    • the denon uses a PC / kettle cord …… so for a $3.50 cord you are set to go.

      • Yep, the same with the Marantz. Just use a spare PC power cord or get a HQ from the bay for cheap.

        See the back here: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61wnVm57AgL.SL1280.jpg

        Like this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-3-Pin-to-IEC-Kettle-Cord-Plug-…

Seller has 100% feedback and its $7.55 shipped.

  • If purchased through amazon with a CBA mastercard will the price be the same, how do I find out the conversion fees if any?

    • On a pre-order you are locked to CBA's exchange rate at time of shipping, plus an international transaction free.

  • For everyone worried about local warranty, YES there is no local warranty. However Amazon do refund for DOA units. From then on though, you roll the dice.

From what I have seen and heard, in this day and age, due to improved manufacturing techniques, the risk of failure when not DOA, is markedly low, when the unit is used with some common sense, and the nature gods don't interfere (although local warranty does not cover lightening strikes as well).

    • When you're paying half local retail, a failure outside of warranty might just mean you go back and buy another one ;)

There is a small market for failed modern recievers from people who know how to fix and resell for profit.

The above assumes you were going to buy one anyway though ;)

      • Yep, I was implying exactly that in not as many words :D Yep I got one too (one of those rare lucky days, I saw OZB going to bed putting my phone on charge. Jumped on the opportunity, Thanks again OP.

    • +1

Having previously worked in the electronic industry (not now) I beg to differ. All receivers regardless of brand tend to have a higher than average fail rate due to the heat they generate and people usually cramp them in tight tv cabinets with poor ventilation.
Also it's worth noting that Marantz dealers cannot sell Marantz online due to their dealer agreements. They can only be advertised online but sold in store or over the phone. Similar to meile brand. so it's worth calling the store and get the "true" sale price. Comparing one company RRP to Amazon's grey import price will not give you the full picture especially when you miss out on easy DOA protection and a 3 year warranty. A false saving IMO

  • Wondering how are these compare with this -
    Pioneer VSX-1131 7.2 Network AV Receiver £351 / AU$570 Delivered @ Amazon UK

    • The Marantz, no brainer. Next preference would the Denon 1300W due to its Audessey room correction, Yamahas would the third in the list followed by the Pioneer and Onkyo at the bottom of the list. That'd be my preference.

  • Not sure about the others but the denon receivers have a removable plug. If you head to msy you can buy a standard pc power supply cable and plug it in and you're set to go. Bought mine locally and it came with European and au cables. That being said, this is significantly cheaper.

  • I'm very tempted …… I got the denon AVR1300 at the last deal but the bigger AVR2200 or AVR3300 would be nice and I've already had an offer for the AVR1300 for what I paid and it still has new amp smell hmmmmmm

  • How can I read these Web pages in English? Is there a browser addon that will translate it automatically?

  • Been waiting for this. Thanks OP!

  • All major Electronic companies will now try to get rid of their high end amplifiers to make way for DOLBY ATMOS amps, which are now coming into the market.

    • +1

the NR1607 is Dolby Atmos compatible. But yeh there should be a flood of older receivers going on sale soon

  • great receiver, the NR's. Couldnt be happier with mine. Awesome price

    • Could you please let me know if the front pre-outs can be connected to an external power amp (or an integrated amp) with the front speakers connected to the external amp (instead of the NR)?

The documentation/manual seems to be sparse: http://manuals.marantz.com/NR1607/NA/EN/download.php?filenam…

      • I'd help you but I have a pretty basic understanding of it all. I just connect the front speakers directly into the NR. Is there a way I can find out?

  • What is the best way to offload an old receiver when you buy a new one?

Ebay - postage (and deal with somehow packing the thing/couriering without breakage)
    Ebay - cash only?
    Gumtree?
    Other?

    • eBay if you can afford the 10% else gumtree. Local pickup with Cash only.

    • +1

Sold two on Gumtree. Fair bit of interest pretty quickly.

  • Does this down-convert digital inputs to Zone 2 ?

My Pioneer can only output analog sources to Zone 2

    Thanks

    • You will find all that receivers only output Analog sources to Zone 2. I would be very surprised if this has changed recently and can convert digital to analog.

    • I'm trying to work this out too.
The manual implies that it does because it says you can select any of the input sources for Zone 2. Only 3 of the 7 inputs have analog as an option.

      • Yes, I checked the manual too and got that impression.

My Pioneer manual specifically states that it cannot down mix the HDMI or Optical and Coaxial Digital Inputs. I noticed it after pulling my hair out for half an hour.

      • The remote control graphic also shows all inputs available.
        http://manuals.marantz.com/NR1607/EU/EN/fig/Ope%20ZONE2%20RC…

  • Are Sony as arseholey regarding grey import repairs as Marantz?

    • the larger the company the more likely you get a repair either at your cost or theirs. That said, you really shouldn't expect a freebie repair. If you have a rather ethnic sounding name you could spin a story about moving to Australia to perhaps get some clemency

      • How ethnic? Boaty McBoatface?

I'm more concerned with being able to have it repaired in Australia - even at cost.. seems like hard to source replacement parts for grey imports with Marantz, etc

        • unless you go to a 3rd party repairer, it probably won't happen. People capable of teh repair that aren't the distributor are few and far between.

That said, its amazing what you can find on youtube/interwebs. Try and diagnose yourself, understand what needs to be replaced and then approach an electronics tech

  • Can anyone suggest an AVR that has XLR outputs?

  • Ive got this Yamaha AVR at the moment which I am looking to upgrade as it does not sound very nice in the 2 channel stereo mode. FOr movies its ok.
    http://au.yamaha.com/en/product_archive/audio-visual/htr-606…

Would the Marantz NR1607 be much of an upgrade?? Or any others I should be looking?

  • Hi
Anyone have problem processing the payment with Marantz NR1607 £414 / A$673 @ Amazon UK
me and my brother try to buy 2 with separate account and separate cc always ask to revise the payment after 4 hours
also spoke to amazon and look ok in is side

  • I received my amplifier today from Amazon Uk. Tested and it works ok.

Bloody Fastway left it outside my front door, so I'm amazed I got it at all. At least aus post leave a card when you're not home… or home lol

    • -1

      How long it tooks?

      • Ordered 26/2. Arrived 8/3.

  • Ordered.
They had 5 in stock but that has quickly dropped to 1 left.

I asked QualiFi a prepurchase question but they wouldn't help unless I provided a serial number

    • Ask Marantz UK instead, they are much more helpful.

      • They said to ask my local distributor lol

    • prepurchase question … serial number…

How does this suppose to work? :)

      • +1

        Just unhelpful I guess

  • Been trying to resist buying then noticed on the weekend my amp suddenly switched itself off half way through a movie. Time to buy a new amp…. wait back order WTF! Ahh ordered anyway

  • +1

I had mine left at the door while out of town for work. Complained to Amazon as it was meant to be signed for so they refunded my postage.

    • What was the name of the company that delivered it?
