HP Desktop Computer 280G2 SFF i5-6500 128G SDD 8.0g RAM for $710 Plus Delivery at Warehouse 1 or Price Match at HP

90

Been looking for a new desktop computer for a while and finally bought the following:

HP 280 G2 (part number Z1Z43PA):
- Intel® Core™ i5-6500 Processor (3.2 GHz, up to 3.6 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost, 6 MB cache, 4 cores)
- Windows 10 Pro 64
- Intel® HD Graphics 530
- 8 GB DDR4-2133 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB)
- 128 GB SATA SSD
- 3 year HP warranty

Not sure if Warehouse 1 have it on the ebay store, if so you might be able to get an extra 10% off with C10 code.

After reading all the terrible reviews about Warehouse 1, I decided to call HP direct and got them to price match. FYI HP's normal price is $894 (http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?…).

Really happy with the purchase!!!

  • I suspect the computer scene will be fairly turbulent over the next few weeks/months with the launch of AMD's new CPU on the 2nd of March (at least the high end, more to follow later).

This may not seem significant to most people, and big retailers of prebuild machines will be somewhat buffered from the effects, but Intel has just started slashing prices on their CPUs. Buying now is perhaps the worst time in many years, or it's the best if you catch a deal; I'm not psychic so who knows?

  • Good price for a general purpose desktop PC. I just built an i3 NUC for a new employee and it came out more expensive than this and obviously didn't have the optical drive, plus this is an i5.

The 3 times that I bought from warehouse1 have all been great, although I did go in store so I can't comment on their delivery performance.

    • I agree. For a pre-built branded computer I think this is a pretty good price, especially when similar spec computers from Dell and Lenovo are typically around $1,000.00.

I actually rang around for the same computer and most other stores were around $850.00 but had no or limited stock and needed to order from HP.

So was even more impressed that HP direct were prepared to price match!!!

Not simply i3 vs i5. The i3 in the NUC is a mobile chip vs this i5 desktop chip. There is no comparison between the two series.

      • Yep, which makes this an even better deal

    • Optical drive = 20 bucks retail

  • I was just trying to spec up a pc
    I5 7500
    Asrock h170m pro4
    Samsung evo 850 250gb
    Corsair 8gb
Slim micro atx case with 300w
(Will reuse wd 1tb black from old pc)
Came up to $724 combining from bricks and mortar store and ebay 10% off.

Is that good? Or should i wait or buy prebuilt?

    • +1

Is yours built? Does it include an OS license? Do you get 3 year manufacturer warranty on the entire machine?

If no, then I would say this is a better deal.

Do you like tinkering now or in the future or want something ready to go put of the box? Obviously the HP is a better answer then.

    • Although I don't buy prebuilt I accept it's often a financially viable (or even superior) solution. Especially considering the warranty and prebuilt nature has varying values to different people. But they also do things I don't agree with (and which are extortionate extra $ to fix in-house), like including such a small SSD and only single channel RAM.

Even so I estimate your system comes to a bit over $600 at Umart not including windows or case/PSU, so I'm not sure it's necessary to jump on the 10% ebay deal. It will be a better performing system than in OP but will also cost more.

With regards to waiting, who knows? But the price cuts will only effect the CPUs and maybe motherboards, all the rest will stay the same. For example I've read the cost of the i5-6500 in the OP will drop USD$50 for the individual part, and I doubt this price reduction has reached our shores yet. But prebuilts will be affected differently. Waiting also allows you to consider the alternative CPU options which are being released by AMD in the near future, which appear to have disrupted Intels pricing.

      • Didnt even look at umart pricing. Wow must have a check. Assembly is easy. I could do it blind folded and have a win 10 pro license that is transferable too

        • I just used Umart as an example since it's my local, you may be able to find that stuff slightly less elsewhere.

But my point was, from the ebay $ you gave, I don't think that rushing for the 10% deal is essential (unless I missed something). Happy hunting.

Edit: I forgot to include postage. Also, if you're committed to building a new system soon, there still may be advantage scouring ebay for a couple of good deals right now. It's doubtful prices of components other than CPU/mobo will be dropping much in the short term.

@grb: >you may be able to find that stuff slightly less elsewhere.

          Yep MSY. Didn't check.

        only single channel RAM.

A whole 1% performance gone right there! ONE PERCENT!

        • I wish I'd bothered to check this earlier and correct you. But since it's too late to educate other people (I doubt they'll still be reading this) I'll try to make sure you understand.

At best, under some workloads, there is no difference between single and dual channel. At worst the computer will run half as fast. The average difference will obviously be somewhere in between.

But in any case, since I doubt you are actually that stupid, yelling "ONE PERCENT!" deliberately misinforms people who may come here for knowledge.
