    AyyMD for life baby!

AMD is really kicking ass now!

      • +1

Its taken a while, this AMD fan got tired of waiting and got a system last year of Blue and Green… sniff.

        • I'm sure she runs a lot cooler though lol

        • @The Gent:
Got RX480 and it pumps out heat. Will be great for the 9 months of winter. So that heat isn't always bad 😀

        • +1

          @tessel:

Considering we seem to be in never ending record heat/heatwaves I wonder how many times you have told yourself that?

        • @kasp:
No heatwave where I live. It is cold 9 months of the year here. Another 2 are cool and 1 is warm at best.

        • That will pass too

  • This or a GTX1060 6gb?

      Radeon RX 480, the best @ 1080p | Good @ 1440p

      http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-radeon-rx-480-polari…

      • should i be going for the OC version on Shopping Sq? or would this suffice? infrequently play games as it is and would only be 1080p.

        • Depends on do you want OC? Personally, I will stay with normal version.

        • @windrunner: nah not really. as long as it plays today's stuff like bf1 and titanfall at 1080p id be happy, though was thinking the OC version as future-proofing/insurance.

Also; ideas on Ryzen? i know its not released yet but, Currently have an i3 3xxx series and am thinking about overhauling the mobo/cpu for abit of future-proofing whilst im upgrading the gpu

        • +1

@Neilgero: If that is the case, then go for OC version even I don't think there will be obvious difference. I am keeping a close eye on Ryzen 5 as well. 7 is beyond my budget.

        • @Neilgero:

Ryzen looks amazing but all the hype stuff is usually bullshit. They test it on something that the other guy will fail at but the Ryzen seems to be holding it's own on benches traditionally neutral which is impressive.

I don't think you will be disappointed getting a Ryzen and intel has dropped their prices recently as well.

        • @kasp:

Thats the crux of my thoughts. Do I go the yet-to-be-proven Ryzen, or go the down in price intel.

Think ill need to wait for these official reviews before doing anything on the CPU front

          Thanks guys

    • Both are good.

      RX 480!

I got the 1060 3gb for $249 from umart using the amex deal.. so depends on how much you want to spend.

  • +2

    To the moon!

  • No warranty?

  • How does this compare to the 970 gtx G1 4GB I got years ago and never got to use due to poor health. Anyway interested to know if the extra 4GB makes a big difference? (Out of the loop bigtime) Cheers

    • +2

      Yes and no…
GPU power wise is very similar, no need to upgrade.
8GB will make a difference at 1440p and/or when you use heavy AA and high texture settings.

Overall, not worth it, unless you plan to buy this and sell GTX 970 for ~$250

    • +1

Only a few games cap out 4GB and it's otherwise perfectly fine at 1440p or 1080p. 970 is about on par with the 480 too. You should be looking at a 1070 if you want an upgrade.

    • +1

      RX480 is on par with a GTX980/1060.

An 8GB frame buffer is much more useful when playing at 1440p…you'll rarely run into the 4GB (or 3.5GB full-speed memory) limit on the 970.

If you can get ~250 for your 970 then YES buy it. If not, it's only an upgrade of about 25% and I'd wait till the 1080ti is released and buy a marked-down 1070.

      • +2

480 is not on par with a 980 overall. It sits between a 970 and 980 but I'd say closer to a 970. It depends on the games though, 480 will be ahead in titles that support Vulkan or favour AMD hardware but it's closer to a 970 in games that favour Nvidia hardware. It's a pointless upgrade in my opinion, a 1070 is a better option.

  • I've never ordered something like this from overseas since getting here. Don't you still need to add GST to the final price?

    • +1

      Under $1000, no.

      • Damn, this is good to know. Is is the same for any PC hardware from anywhere overseas for under 1000? Or are there some limitations?

        • +3

          From governement website:

For goods that are worth equal to or under AUD1,000, there are no duties, taxes or charges to pay.
For goods that are worth more than AUD1,000, you will need to fill out a special form called an Import Declaration, and pay duties, taxes and charges.
You will need to pay duties and taxes on some goods (like tobacco or alcohol) regardless of their value
Certain types of goods are not allowed to be brought into Australia, or else need special permits.

          @FabMan: Haha, thanks mate!

        • +1

@FabMan: IIRC, end of this financial year it changes… I seem to recall that after that $100 is the upper limit… or did they come to their sense and kibosh the plan? Gerry Harvey tried to convince Julia Gillard to axe the $1000, she said no, but Tony Abbot/Malcolm Turnbull said good idea.

      • +1

Unfortunately come 1 July it looks like the $1k threshold will be removed and GST will apply.

        • Cheers

  • Add the Free DOOM to post, however can't confirm newegg is a promoting supplier. http://www.amd.com/en-us/markets/game/featured/doom

    • Some of the cards do have Doom voucher, not sure why this one does not

    • Pros: 8GB RX 480 for $200, what is not to like? Update; after a couple of days testing I can confirm that this card is outstanding for the money. It runs circles around my R9 280X.

Cons: I wish I had read the fine print. No free Doom and no RGB on this card. Oh well, it is still a great deal. Update; This card gets very hot. I am having trouble trusting the automatic fans, but it does seem to be working as intended. I will probably adjust the fans for more cooling, this is fine for me because I don't care about noise.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you know which card you are getting. This is the 8GB with no lights. Update; I love it. Smaller and uses less power than my R9 280X.

    Shit price.

    Here's a better deal.

Do I need to put the /s? Are people that dumb?

  • +2

    From the new egg listing:

    "Return Policies
    Return for refund: 15 days
Return for replacement within: 15 days
    Restocking fee: Yes"

    Nope.

  • +2

This is a good deal, and a good card. Just be careful of warranty. From memory (feel free to correct if I'm wrong) EVGA is the only manufacturer with international warranty. So if something goes wrong with this card after the return period, you are screwed, as you won't have warranty from the manufacturer to cover it.

So just keep this in mind if wanting to purchase this.

  • Anyone know how loud this card is? I understand it may produce noise but It would most likely beat my Sapphire 290 under load.

  • +1

This card has more RAM than my computer
