Belkin WeMo Light Switch - $39 at Bunnings, $39.95 at Myer

130

Found through Price Hipster that the Belkin WeMo light switches are back at $39. Took me 3 JBHIFI stores to price match in Brisbane CBD, but finally got there (I get 7.5% discount on purchases through a corporate program, hence the reason for price matching).

Did have a look at Office Works as well, but they only seem to sell them online, not sure if you can get them to price match through their website.

I saw that Myer also has them at $39.95 if you want to go there instead.

Really good price considering lots of other retailers have them for around $80.

  • Considering getting one for the deck, Anyone has these can share some feedback on them?

Have a few installed. I actually quite like the build quality. They have a satisifying click and also a little white LED so you can find the switch in the dark.

They have got lost only once, but you just need to take off the face plate and hard reset to get them back online.

Plenty of integrations with Alexa, IFTTT, etc.

You will typically need an electrician to modify wiring if this will be used to replace an existing switch. That's because there is usually only a pair of wires running to the switch (Loop at the light method) and these switches require power to work (Loop at the switch method).

Other than that I've been using the Belkin switches and motion sensors for about 5 years. The software has always been problematic (slow to launch, buggy, problems updating firmware using Android - works on iOS) but I mostly use it for automation so once that's done you don't have to touch it. If I do want to switch a device on or off remotely I use a third party app called Wemo Home on Android which has been great.

      • Do the lights turn off automatically when no motion is detected?

        • +1

If You have the Switch + Motion detector, you can Get the motion detector to trigger the light switch for a specific amount of time e.g: 5mins.

A new addition in the rules, if you only buy the light switch, you can make it turn off automatically by setting a timer.

    • I have one that I have had for two years, I use OpenHab on a Raspberry PI to control it (and other Wemo light switches), it works great if you want to automate your lights when you are away

  • So they let you price match and use a discount card, super.

Corporate discount - I can buy JBHIFI gift cards at a 7.5% discount through an internal rewards website, then just use them as normal at JBHIFI stores.

Even with a fancy switch I still can't turn her on…

lighten up its not the end of the world

  • I want these, but I need one that can replace a 4 gang switch, and I'm yet to find any company that does that.

    • I've done it with 2 gang switches, as long as they are both One way switches.
I have 2 light switches next to each other. 2 doesn't look too bad on the wall, but i guess 4 is too much.
Unless you are willing to combine 2 zones into 1, then you can have 2 Wemo light switches.

Last option if you really want the 4 separate zones, and don't care of having any physical switches, you could bury them inside the wall cavity.

    • There are a few 4 gang alternative options from Chinese imports. Not sure how compatible they are with other stuff though:

  • You can also use a custom server to make these available via Apple Home. I've done it for other Belkin WeMo series and might grab this to do lights as well.

      Nice find mate!

  • Are there stand alone, battery powered remotes that work with these? I have an x10 network and use a remote wall plate or key fob remote to trigger lights. I don't want to use a phone/tablet for such a simple task but can't find anything that will do this?

I stumbled onto a 'remote control for wifi light bulbs' a few weeks ago, but now I can't find it.
If I remember correctly, one of the lesser-known brands of wifi light bulbs also make a battery-powered remote to operate them.
If my brain or web browser history end up finding it, I'll let you know.

      edit:
It appears Philips Hue have one, but I don't think that's what I was remembering:
      http://www2.meethue.com/en-us/productdetail/philips-hue-dimm…

      • So the philips one would only work with hue is that right? Gather belkin don't offer something like that?

        • You might be able to automate them together using the ifttt.com service.

  • Are they getting replaced soon?

  • Would it fit the standard horizontal light switch? From the picture, it looks like thin vertical switch and do I need to patch/reconfigure the wall?

  • BTW.. a recent firmware update has now enabled a long press of the switch to turn other Wemo products on or off. This has saved me from grabbing the phone to turn the outside LED lights on and off where the switch directly controls the garage light. Awesome stuff.

    • Heck yeah, sounds good!

    • Does that mean all wemo products or just specific ones that you can somehow link to that switch?

      • Even your Wemo slow cooker.

  • Hoppers Crossing bunnings have no switches in stock. Myers at Werribee plaza is useless. Jbhifi at Werribee plaza would not price match. $72 was their "best" price.

    • Do you have a Myer near by? Mine only had one in stock but at least it was $39.95 and I am sure they would price match Bunnings as well.

      • Myers at Werribee plaza is useless.

Update : been searching for these and went to Thomastown & Hawthorn , on the system it shows 10 & 6 , but apparently stock numbers were the empty boxes !

By luck, went to Chirnside bunnings and bought the final two .

  • Got mine connected yesterday and updated to the latest firmware. What a mission that was!

Anyway, now I use a different app on Android to control them (much quicker/better than the WeMo app) and have my old Windows 10 Mobile stationary at home with IFTTT connected with Cortana. This enables me to say things like "hey Cortana, trigger the kitchen lights". :)
