Great deal. I just bought a 16TB WD Mybook Duo for $700 Delivered.

Cheapest way to get 2 8TB WD Reds and a free HDD case!

  • +1

    EUR 773,98

    • +1

Just fixed the link, it's out of stock now but you can still backorder for the same price

  • +1

Looks like they've fixed the price. I'm seeing €773.98 not including delivery.

  • Ok, what the heck are yuz doing with 16Tb?

    • +9

I'm keeping my porn collection digital so this doesn't happen.

      • +3

        Now that's using your noodle

      • Jeez, when you see photo's like that, makes my own mild hoarderism seem ok.

      • There were also clippings from erotic magazines where it appeared the man had cut out his favourite articles, and thrown away the rest of the magazine.

Obviously, he just bought them for the articles…

    • +2

10 mins of DCI 4K RAW 16 bit video uses up almost 2tb. And then of course you've got the monthly porn quota which is almost double again.

    • +2

      You mean 8tb right?
I mean… is anyone crazy enough to not use one drive to backup the other?!?

    • "linux iso's"

    • Don't be a fool. Buy a NAS. It's not worth the risk of storing it all the old fashioned way.
      https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=ne…

  • One can never have too much storage! Awesome deal!

  • Plan on removing these HDD from the enclosure of other NAS use.. anyone comment on handling warranty for the HDD in these?
    - do they need to be returned overseas?
    - is there a disadvantage if the HDD is out of the enclosure for purpose of proving warranty entitled?

    • Any warranty would be through seller, i.e no Australian Warranty.

      • Warranty will be via Amazon, so will need to be returned to them.
      • The HDDs are user accessible so no issues there. If you need to warranty I expect the entire unit will need to go back (Both 8TB Disks)
      • This may be different now, but a few years ago, when needing to RMA one of my WD green drives I still had to send it overseas. There was no local place to send it to for warranty (outside the first year where you can send it back to retailer)

        • Sounds about right. Doing any warranty where overseas shipping occurs gets expensive quick. I've done a warranty to Amazon US before and at least they did a partial shipping refund which was nice.

  • Great product..great Price. I have the EX1 6TB version.

  • are these the reds?

      • +1

Ultrafast filetransfers. Equipped with WD Red NAS drives for continuous operation (only available in preconfigured models)

  • I ordered one , all in German , could not understand much , but the final screen said ( Translate from German to English ) " Many Thanks. Your 1-Click order will be processed." , don't know OK or not .

    • +3

Clearly not! In German, Danke means you're crazy spending so much on a drive! Um?!?? Just go to the orders page to see your order.

      • Yeah, word borrowed from english for describing noob technophiles - Derived from

        Wet (dank) behind the e(ars).

  • Thanks , I go to my account , order history and yes , it is on order list , thanks.

  • +1

it's 400+ dollars per 8 TB red drive at MSY, so cheap way to get 2x8TB drives…. over $200 saving.

  • +1

    Thanks OP!

Ordered for €452.70 shipped. First time I've ever paid over $45 for shipping, but this time it seems worth it!

    I hope they honour it!

Fair whack cheaper than the same product at JB at the moment.

  • Any problem getting this from Germany though? Just need an Aussie plug?

    • +4

Experience with the 4TB bought last few years , it came with interchangeable plugs , just fit the Aust plug into the power adaptor ( 12V) and simply discard all other.

  • how does this work? just plug and play?

  • betcha they cancel all the orders citing pricing error.

    • I'm thinking thats a possibility.. my credit card hasn't been charged yet even though the order is sitting there in my Amazon account.

      • That's always the case, Amazon doesn't charge your card until it ships.

        • Oh cool, thanks!

          Fingers crossed!

  • +2

I have no idea why I just bought one!

  • Pulled the trigger #CrossingFingers

  • 499 EURO"s now.. darn!

opps, got it, vat removed at checkin.

now: This seller does not deliver to Australia. Learn more

Agh… FRQ IT, worked… great price!!!!

  • +2

not sure if I needed one but bought one, now I have to gumtree the old drives!!

  • Do these actually perform ok? I'm thinking of getting a Synology and 2 drives… same price only gets me 6TB…

    • +2

Synology are very nice, I run a DS413. The benefit of Synology is the software and capabilities provided.

  • Am thinking of getting a networked storage solution for a small office of 5.
Is it possible for all computers to connect and backup to the device, but Control the access that individual computers have? I.e. Bookkeeper and salesperson both autonomously sync, but restrict access so salesperson can't see the bookkeeper's files?

    • Yes, you can use WD app to control permissions to specific users

  • You bloody legend

  • worth getting over a Synology ?

    • +1

I've just ordered one for the WD Red drives, which I'll put into my existing Synology. It's cheaper than buying just the drives by themselves, so you probably can't go wrong getting one and seeing if it's any good. If it's not, just get a Synology later and stick the drives in.

  • The international transaction fee of my CBA Credit card is a deal breaker…

    • Get yourself a CBA travel money card. Link it the CommBank app and you can transfer AUD to EUR instantl; admittedly it's not the greatest Fx rate but saves on the international fee.

    • +1

      Citibank Plus card.

The account and debit card are completely free. There are NO international transaction fees charged and the exchange rate used is VISA's rate (which is about 1% off the XE rate)

      • This is a fantastic card, but needs cash (so 1 day to transfer money) great for when you need to use an ATM overseas. I use BankWest Platinum Credit Card for the same low fees for online purchases as it doesn't need cash sitting in the account.

    • 28 Degrees Mater Card? or are these not worth it anymore?

  • So if im just accessing the NAS to play videos from my media centre (nuc) , and using VLC or windows media player to play the file then this would be fine?

    • Yes.

  • +4

FYI if you plan on using the cloud function:

    https://www.engadget.com/2017/03/05/wd-my-cloud-security-exp…

    • Thanks for the heads up!

Will probably run this as just a local cloud for media streaming and general storage at home.

Beats the 3 x external USB drives I have connected at the moment… haha

    • Great. Another device with afterthought-level security that could be aiding criminal gangs' botnets. Saving in one sense, paying in another.

  • +1

I have bought a few of these units now from Amazon purely for the hdds for my NAS. Starting to amass a fair old collection of spare enclosures which I don't use (FYI They will only recognise WD drives) Just be aware if you are adding a 8TB drive to an existing NAS it can take 4 days or so to rebuild the RAID.

    • really? only WD drives when replacing them… thats interesting…. but not a show-stopper.

    • Would you be willing to part with one of your spare NAS enclosures?

    • Do you know if you can throw different size WD drives into the enclosure together, say a 2TB and 3TB? Or do they need to be matched?

  • Price increased. Does somebody want to report this as expired?

    • +1

curious to see if they honour those that already purchased. although i doubt theyll honour the any that were placed on 'backorder'

      • +1

From previous dealings with amazon (US) they came across as having very good business practices. I would actually be surprised if they didn't honour it.
They also do crazy offers every now and then so advertised price might actually be intended.
        Guess we'll find out soon.

        • amazon UK cancelled something for me like this citing pricing error not long ago. lets hope ze germans don't cancel this one.

next best is $499USD for mybook duo on amazon.com (US one). still cheaper than buying individual drives locally.

  • I guess any internet features can be assumed useless until fixed (properly) http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3005875/hackers-fin…

  • I ordered one but thought about getting one 8TB drive out for my existing NAS and run this as a backup.
Does anyone know if you can take out just ONE 8TB drive and put in a 5TB instead … so run it with a 5Tb and 8TB to make it 13TB? Not sure if the drives need to be the same size …

    • +1

Should be able to run them as two seperate drives (with different shared folders on each).

Or, you should, in theory, be able to set them up as a spanned drive with no redundancy but it shows up as one big drive. It's a pretty common feature.

        • @ihbh: I think so, mine will take 2-3 weeks to ship
