Digital DAB+/FM Radio at Kmart for $14

1230

Marked as $49 (I think), but scans for $14. They had a newer model with a different box branded as "Home & Co" instead of Audiosonic, but essentially looked like it was the same unit. Link to newer model: http://www.kmart.com.au/product/dab--fm-mantle-radio/1217812

It sounds reasonable for the price. Has aux in as well for connecting your phone, etc.

  • $14 is very cheap, considering the usual KMart offering is a radio with a tiny single speaker for $29. I'll drop by tomorrow and have a look.

  • No line out. :(

    • That's what TuneIn's for… ;)

      • What's a tunein?

          @sav11:
          Requirement: Internet.

          facepalm

Bought a LG Stylus DAB+ phone from Aldi last friday, initially just for the DAB. Will use the phone as wireless remote control as well for my newly obtained Pioneer VSX-1131. Also got a DAB on my iRiver S100 but it's dying. Couldn't find a replacement unless I'm willing to fork out $250 & buy it from Israel Ebay. iRiver S100 is a piece of art I tell you that.

Though thanks for the link. Will try that app now. :)

        • @Yummy: I feel that way about my iriver b30. Battery is cactus

        • @Yummy:

Bought a LG Stylus DAB+ phone from Aldi last Friday

hope you got it for $249

        • @CVonC:

I am afraid not. Been looking at different Aldis but they sold it here locally at $270.

        • @Yummy:

There were 3 at Chatswood yesterday.

Dang. Pity it's abit of distance for me unless I take train, but not a fan of public transport.

          And a correction, I paid $279 for it. D'OH! $30 difference, I'm hurting inside. >_<;

        • @Yummy:

1 @ Eastgardens on Friday too if that's closer to you and still available.

I would totally refund and rebuy ^^

          @CVonC:
Would love that but I've installed a lot of appz already. :(
          Thanks anyway. :D

I'd get one. Usually them and Target have their 15 to 20 dollar DAB radios every few months and had no issues with the ones I've bought. Even their record players too

        • SLAMMAA, Putnum, adrian

          Let's end this conversation here.

      • +2

why not? I currently own about 6-7. One in the Kitchen, at my desk, in the bathroom, one on the bedside table, in the shed, the alfresco dining area…. i can go on

        • Now that's awesomeness right there :)

        • +1

@adrianhughes1998: under 10 bucks a pop, why not

Fine print: not all the ones i have were the under $10 kmart ones, some are actually quite good

        • @Matt P: drug dealer!

Jkz. I got a Bush one for 18 bucks from gift cards from my work leaving lol.

        • +1

@adrianhughes1998: all discounted of course ;)

    • Debating whether to pickup a record player from Target. They feel super plasticky, but they would be for thrift shop/op shop vinyls.

      • +3

You'd be better off listening to Pip farting on a snare drum

        • Where can I get this? I would like to use that as my ringtone.

      • +7

If you call records 'vinyls' then this player would be perfect for you.

      • Would be great for playing Kamal records.

  • Thanks, these are great for the beach.

    • +1

      Lol. Beach in Tasmania

      • +17

"the beach" is slang for his woman

      • +1

There are so many great beaches in Tassie.

        • Sheep?

          @Diji1:
          So you prefer 🐑 sheep 🐑, Diji1🙉
          Each to their own😀

        • ..show us the map Tassie & these beaches you speak of!!

        • @ja72: You don't want any sand on your map of Tasmania.

    • +1

Just double check they are battery powered first :-)
The replacement model is mains only I think so this one might be too (I had a quick look at K-Mart locally, they didn't have the model that OP posted, only the new one).

      • 5V socket on back of new model.
Much cheaper to use plug pack for international sales from factory.

  • -1

Is that one the same as this?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/229286

    • +5

Do those two really look the same to you? Click on the deal links of the two posts and have a look at the images + descriptions on the images.

    • Bought 4 of those. Had a few issues. Installed 1 in car dash fed to Aux of head unit.

      • Broden, is that you?

        • +2

          Definitely NOT😯

As I posted in that deal, it was necessary to buy around 3 just to get 1 that worked correctly.
(Only wanted 2. Bought 2 - tested & posted review here, bought 2 more but returned 2 immediately as faulty, bought another 2 as spares just in case, returned 2 as faults arose later - so bought 6 to keep just 2.)

Switches, volume control, headphone socket, etc failed on most units I bought.

Posted photos of circuit boards, possible mods, & details of model faults I found .

Brodens don't put that sort of (or any) work into a deal to help others😯

        • @Infidel:

Nice! Sounds like a pretty suspect device, if the failure rate is that high…

        • @warwickjames:
As I posted in that deal.
Similar failure rate to some Aldi electronics (supplier to Aldi contacted me after my detailed reviews elsewhere - to help improve quality control & design). Best to buy more than you need when some stock is likely to be faulty.

Still got 2 OK radios at $9ea & fair bit of fun playing with them.
But 1 is a fault-free newer $39 model I convinced Kmart to replace under warranty. (Building power bank into it) Other one is modified in car dash, as faulty volume control is not used there.

Had suggested a use for 2 of those mono units - a simple rewire of audio into internal amp of one should give stereo - space the speakers as desired🙉 Now this deal delivers stereo cheaper & easier.

Hopefully this model will be better, but probably has poor quality control.

      • @Infidel, that's what I want to do in my car, do you have a guide or a general set of steps? I'm not paying another $150 to get DAB on a head unit…

        • +2

          Basics are…
First use a DAB+ radio in car to check it out. Power from USB charger, output of headphones to AUX input of head unit. Used this setup for years with radio on dash or seat with antenna extended. Still can unplug & use as portable radio 📻

Modifications are mainly to take that working portable setup & fit radio into dash. The $9 one had a circuit board that fits a single DIN in dash & had single DIN free - lucky.

So simply removed speaker (undo screws on back, unplug), & cut section of case with switches & display to correct size to fit dash, fitted in dash. Output board that is wired to main board provides audio output (3.5mm socket) & power in (micro-USB) - so fix in DIN space & run wires out. I left battery attached, but will revisit that.

Other issue is antenna - unsoldered shielded cable on circuit board, soldered longer shielded cable with suitable antenna at other end. I had a basic car TV antenna (suction cups attach to top of windscreen) & tucked cable out of sight. Antenna isn't ideal, but works well. Otherwise could try a longer shielded cable between circuit board & existing antenna laid on top of dash.

Main issues with using radio designed for other uses - display is hard to read (low & middle of dash), push button switches need several to be pressed to select Preset station (Preset, up/down to station, Select). Those combine to mean selecting all but first 2 or last stations are a chore.
So selecting a suitable DAB+ radio for car use is important. (Kogan were selling one to mount on dash of car around $80.)

Using a portable DAB+ radio is far easier than installing😯

        • Bluetooth stream using TuneIn. It doesn't use much data.

        • @Infidel: The kogan one is an epic heap of shit, i bought one for a second car. OK if you have a rubbish factory sound system, but in a high quality system (heck, even the standard system in the 2015 VW Polo it went into) there is a lot of background noise etc.. I'm still using my OG Pure Highway from like 2008 every single day, nothing can beat it. (well.. except for maybe a newer pure highway)

  • Oops 😬

  • +2

    sounds reasonable for the price

Yes, but how's the audio quality? ;)

    • +2

Sound quality is reasonable. It's somewhat boomy at the lower end, but overall looks good and sounds OK. DAB reception is good and stable.

They are also clearing the small mono black ones for $10. The sound quality is really poor and the reception is much less stable, but I wanted a small, compact DAB for the office. I'll replace the 2 inch speaker if I find a decent one. It has a stereo phones out but only the left channel has sound. A possible deliberate downgrade. Still a good buy.

I only came across a few open boxes and returned units so I did not bother to post. I think they're clearing all the old line DAB units in the black boxes. You need to scan the price to verify.

      • So is this actually stereo? If so then great! It's amazing to see all these radios around but hardly any in stereo.

        • +1

Yes, the $14 one is in stereo. Totally agree with you, it's hard to find these in stereo. It's a good buy.

Unfortunately the small black $10 one is in mono, but still good for a small portable DAB.

        • Hi, yes, it's stereo.

  • Awesome going to get one for the shed. My 10 year old iPod dock died recently. I reckon that's a pretty good run

  • +1

Does this suffer the same problem as there other model that was on sale last year for $9? Where the volume jumps all over the place when adjusted, instead of smoothly moving up and down.

    • I have never had that problem with that one. The battery only lasting 5 hours isn't that big a problem either. Using the line-out gives excellent result if I want to listen to music, and the speaker is more than adequate for "it's just not Cricket".

    • Yep, sound adjustment is crap on that one. I still use it though. Might visit Kmart today.

    • They fixed that problem & relaunched that model @$39. Convinced staff to upgrade me as a warranty replacement.

Fault was converting volume ◀▶ to rotary dial (for retro look) - rotating dial did not press up/down switched correctly😯

    • This one doesn't suffer from the volume knob issue the $9 version does.

  • I'd grab some as presents if was online …..Might call and see if they hold until weekend though usually they just do 48 hours.

  • Cheers mate, going to grab one this afternoon. Kmart also have the price check stations I believe.

  • +7

My local Kmart doesn't have check-outs anymore, you just grab what you want and walk out.

    • +5

Yeah they ring up your sale down the cop shop :)

      • +1

You must be fun at parties.

        • -2

well he is funnier than you! so +1 from me.

        • I take that literally because his comment was pretty funny!

  • Does it have earphones output?

    • +2

i hope so. It will be perfect for when you go for a jog.

    • No, aux in only.

  • …so i presume no way of knowing whether stock available without visiting a store?

    • +1

I called the store in South Morang (VIC), they didn't have any. Cheapest was some other radio for $29.

      • ..might try calling my local but not really optimistic

  • +6

In VIC, Chadstone and Brandon Park have none. I've given up

    • +1

thanks for posting….i dont really bother with these kmart deals anymore as there has literally never been any stock at my local

  • +3

    Scans at $49 in SA.

    • did you show them the pic of the receipt & try to price match?

    • +1

      Which store did you try?

      • also curious, was gonna try cbd at lunch

      • +1

Kurralta Park Kmart. They had about ten, but all the new brand, not Audiosonic, so no deal.

    • +1

OP stated must be old Audiosonic stock (black box). New stock will be $49.

    • Did you scan the old stock or the new stock? Only the only stock with the Audiosonic brand is $14.

      • It was about ten boxes, only with the new branding. I had just seen that the box looked like your pic, so hence the mistake. The OzB image crop got me.

Still can't get digital radio where I live in regional Victoria or nbn……

    • +2

…it makes a great paperweight too!

  • If you're a baby boomer, 3mp has gone modern and magic is now only talk.

  • We hardly ever listen to radio other than FM drive time… Will DAB+ be beneficial? Never having a digital radio before, what are some of the things I may have been missing out on?

    • Why not check out the stations that are broadcasting on DAB+ and see if the programs suit you?

      http://www.digitalradioplus.com.au/

      Will DAB+ be beneficial?

Don't think it has any health impacts. :)

      • Thanks so much for the link.

My main concern was what sort of radio programs I could expect out of it… Turns out the link was even more helpful! Apparently I don't have coverage in our area!

        • +1

Best thing about DAB IMO is clarity of sound and that old am stations are now clearer than fm

  • +3

    no stock parkmore VIC…
i hate these kmart deals…theyre only ever usually at the OPs store! :P

  • +1

Is this AV or battery powered? Can't tell from the Kmart website page.

    • +2

      It's mains powered.

  • No stock at store I check for old black boxed stock in Brisbane - "sold out ages ago". Just new white stock at $49😢

  • scanned in at $49
    :(

    • Found one in Victoria Gardens but scanned at $49 too.

      • was it the the one w/wood paneling…? thats the 'new' one as far as i can tell and is indeed $49 (checked at my local & its also online)

    • Did you scan the old stock or the new stock? Only the only stock with the Audiosonic brand is $14.

  • +2

    Who listens to the radio?

That's what I want to know!

    • triplej and local ABC for the cricket when it's on.
