Mazda 626 Won't Start

Hey Everyone!

So my Mazda 626 won't start and trying to suss out what the possible faults could be.

The vehicle has been running fine until this morning where it won't start;
I have an audio clips here

Lights, radio and power windows all seem to be functioning so i think i could possibly rule out the battery.
When i attempt to start the car, i do get a whiff of petrol.

Any ideas what this could be? Any easy trouble shooting steps?

I don't know car stuff : ((

Thanks!

Might help by mentioning what car you have.

no fuel getting to the engine.

    • after some brief research and hearing similar sounds off youtube, yeah that's most likely it

or no spark to ignite the fuel. (buts thats a very wide problem - no fuel or no spark)

Battery sounds fine as its turning the engine over and over.

I checked the fuel valve nothing came out, and no humming from the fuel pump, but yeah cheers

          @Godric:

          1. Have you run the fuel tank dry recently (hey we're on OzBargain)? Fuel pumps need fuel for lubrication and running them dry can burn them out.

          2. Check the fuses and relays.

          3. Google for the workshop manual for your particular model. Read the fuel system troubleshooting section and proceed from there.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

1: I have actually, waited for the price to dip down, damn
2: Fuses seem clean none of the prongs look roasted or anything, haven't checked with a multi meter yet

I thought the only risk of running with low fuel would it stopping in the middle of a drive some where, not destroying the pump, damn

1: I have actually, waited for the price to dip down, damn

That sounds like the problem then.

Have you tested the fuel pump by shorting terminals of the check connector?

I checked the fuel valve nothing came out, and no humming from the fuel pump, but yeah cheers

        • just to add to this.

i wouldnt short the connectors to test the fuel pump. you dont want a spark in the fuel tank.

put key and out car in ON position. this will turn on the fuel pump and pressurise the fuel rail. isolate fuel filter problem first.

change out fuel filter first, then the pump. always change the filter when you change out the pump also as a blocked filter can also kill a pump.

  • Could be almost literally anything, from bad petrol to a broken timing belt (if you have a non-interference engine).

As bagit asked, knowing the car brand and model might help us help you.

  • petrol smell probabaly means flooded combustion.check spark then fuel regulator/fuilter

It's the nurdle flange. Common fault on this model car.

Ring up "Some on who cares" RACV :)

      Even try someone who cares

Fuel filter blocked?, Otherwise fuel pump.

Sounds like some sort of a issue starting the car.

Cash me ousside, how 'bout dat!

  • Crickets are your problem.

  • Take the car to a mechanic

More like take mechanic to the car :)

  • Did you try a jumpstart to rule out the battery? Lights, radio and power windows would still work on a weak battery that just does not have enough juice to start the car.

    • If you listen to the audio clip you can tell the battery is fine.

  • Maybe spark plugs? My parent's car would start but then die shortly after,so I changed the spark plugs and it starts well now. When I took the spark plugs out, some parts of the metal were corroded…

Try a jumpstart. Lights and radio doesnt mean your battery is good. No point doing anything else until you rule out the battery.

    • If you listen to the audio clip you can tell the battery is fine.

      • You should start a business diagnosing mechanical problems over the phone! :P

I had a 1991 626 hatchback. Traded it in 2010 because it was old and it's safer to drive a new car.

Time for a new car mate.

Fuel hose split? Charge battery if needed, then startup and check with a torch for wet area or drips on floor. Check fuel flow as close to engine as you can undo a hose.
Check spark by pulling a wire off spark plug and holding 2mm off engine block while someone turns the engine over. Insulate your hand, but it wont harm you if you get zapped.
Other suggestions above are good, such as timing belt/nie. A blocked fuel filter got me once. Check fuses and for broken, corroded connections under bonnet.

Look in Gumtree for cheap mobile mechanic.

Another thing is the immobiler could cut your spark, if no spark get someone to hotwire the system. Exampe coil neg wire I think.

The sound clip sounds like you can eliminate timing belt and battery issue.

    Definitely a fuel issue….

Firstly REMOVE the fuel cap and trying starting the car.

A faulty ventilation valve in the fuel cap will cause a vacuum in your fuel tank so preventing fuel from getting to the engine.
If that works then get a new fuel cap.

If not, call the NRMA/RACV. You pay them to get you going.

  • The car is at least 15 years old. It could be anything. Get your roadside assistance company to check it out or call a mobile mechanic.

Thanks for tips and ideas, was indeed fuel pump and has since been replaced.

Lesson learned to not run on low fuel frequently :3
