Can we install windows on it?

    • +3

in 32GB of storage? Almost 400 bucks gets your plenty of native Windows options albeit without the FHD screen.

    • +20

You get a chromebook to get away from Windows so why install it. Possible but a waste of effort IMHO

    • +7

Yeah, but it's wonky as all (profanity).

Various versions of Linux (with Wine support) will run without a hitch though. I have Vice City and a fair few older games running flawlessly on my Toshiba Chromebook 2 with only 2GB of RAM. Steam games with Linux should run pretty well too, Hotline Miami is a good example of this too.

More importantly though, for the last few months they've been phasing in more and more Android OS than Chrome OS and the menus are changing slightly and shit too, soon enough hopefully all Chromebooks will have proper Android OS support and access to the Play Store, a fair few already do at the present moment as it is. Anyway, with Play Store support, considering most Chromebooks' specs are at least on par with high end Android phones, there should be a metric (profanity) load of apps coming over in an ideal setting.

    • +1

+1 if windows compatible, so you can run just about anything you need on a semi decent peice of hardware. Add a compact USB for storage.
I'd like to see what comparable windows device is available with a FHD IPS screen for the same amount.

  • +2

Nice that it has FHD screen. Chrome book are very limiting though.

    • +7

Whats very limiting? For specialized software and gaming a no-no, but for most users, a Chromebook is much a better and sensible option.

      • What about Microsoft Outlook and Word/Excel?

        • That's Gmail,docs and sheets

        • android versions work fine on chromebooks

        • +3
        • -1

@TightBottom: Sheets is pretty pathetic compared to Excel but you can use the Excel online version for some light work I guess. For any more complex spreadsheets you will need the full desktop suite though.

      • +4

Sold my Macbook Air and downgraded to Chromebook. I've never looked back.

  • +6

Nice price for an aluminium body. A light machine with a good screen, perfect for the average student just taking notes, or as a couch web browsing device.

      • +3

any decent laptops with an good build, FHD screen, and more powerful CPU for a 'bit more'?

        • -2

$550 for Dell Latitude E5470 Laptop (i5-6200U/4GB RAM/128GB SSD/14" HD) (Refurb but 1 year warranty)

~$160 more for a i5 6200U, 128GB SSD, Windows 7 and most importantly local warranty is a no brainer for someone after a decent machine.
Weight wise 1.76kg compared to 1.54kg for the Chromebook, so not too far off.
Battery life wise Dell lasting over 7hrs real time vs over 9 hrs for the Chromebook according to online reviews.

Not everyone needs a FHD screen

So to answer your question, there are better options if you are willing to spend a little bit more and do some research.

          @easternculture:

If I wanted a laptop for an 'average student just taking notes, or as a couch web browsing device' I'd think I'd rather the FHD screen, longer battery life, and lighter weight than to pay the extra $160 for i5, SSD and local warranty. the n3160 is enough for notetaking and general web browsing.

Plus regarding your local warranty argument, everyone puts different value on how much extra local stock should cost vs overseas stock. I can also argue that this is brand new vs refurb as many people would pay a lot more for new than refurb.

Also re battery life, acer claims a 12 hour battery life, go to Amazon reviews and do a search for 'battery,' and and you'll find that there are just as many people who claim that it has over 12 hours of battery life as those who claim that its only 9-11 hours.

Also 1.76kg is not really impressive and around standard for 14" laptop, hell even the Lenovo Thinkpad E450 is 1.81kg. 200g can be the difference between a ultrabook and an average laptop.

Honestly if want a laptop for a 'just taking notes, or as a couch web browsing device,' and also after a faster CPU then this chromebook, then just get the Dell 11 3000 for $320. $230 less for a brand new laptop thats smaller, lighter and longer battery life, can't go wrong.

I just don't see the value in a $550 refurb with a HD screen.

        • @lyl:

          well you asked for a

decent laptops with an good build, FHD screen, and more powerful CPU for a 'bit more'?

          And i got you one

          :)

        • @easternculture:

Only missing the FHD screen and the 'bit more', 2 of the 4 criteria lol

        • @lyl:

And FYI, the Dell e5470 price Starts from $2,282.501 for a brand new one without an SSD, only a 500GB HDD but with windows 10

        • @easternculture:

Wow thats an insane RRP, don't think it will make ozbargain front-page even with 50% off that.

        • @lyl:

Its a business Laptop, hence the inflated price

        • +1

@easternculture: fair enough, but an FHD screen is nice. Unfortunately if you don't have one, that usually means you have 1366x768 which is quite a big jump down and very noticeable. I spent years with a 1440x900 14" screen and it was actually great, but below that I believe is definitely a compromise.

On the other hand, I am definitely in the camp that quad HD isn't necessary, just sucks battery life

Time for my generic "I love Chrome OS post"

. Lightweight OS, does everything lightning fast
. Doesn't require much power, which then leads to great battery life
. Microsoft Office and Google Docs work great online, and for free
. Android and Google Play Store integration on it's way
    . Linux support and whatnot

I can't be bothered actually getting into huge details, but I use DOSBox, JS Torrent, and VBA on it perfectly fine and mine's one of the lower end 2GB Chromies, in addition to this, Linux is running fine for shit like Hotline Miami and the sort via Steam.

    • +1

I would soil my pants with happiness if they made a palmtop chromebook with a six inch screen or so that could make phone calls. A true convergence device.

        GPD Win with Chromium OS?

        • +2

No. better off going with it's sibling, the GPD Pocket here:
          https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-pocket-7-0-umpc-lapto…

          Natively with Linux now..

        • @bchliu: would love one of these…. ill go the linux varient.

Currently i have a dell 8 tab funning win 10 with its bt keyboard.
Only problem is with win 10 battery life is a bit poor and having only 1 micro isb port i constantly change between the otg cable and charge cable.

I have an old eee pc 1000h running peppermint 6 and works well bit the battery life is poor for its age but is mobile for a few hours.

A bit sluggish even with the 2gb ram upgrade but it still retains the ol spinner 16gb hdd , which i have been told by putting an ssd it will give it a new lease in life.

      • Something like this as well?
Hopefully something remotely similar to the concept when it finally goes into production.

    • I've had an opposite experience with a chromebook
      - skype doesn't work (last version has no video chat, no screen share etc, only voice chat)
      - video payers doesn't play 70% of offline video content (even vlc player)
      - you could find absolutely nothing in store. Only some unusable trash software available, similar as in the windows store
      - it is very hard to open more than 3-4 tabs in a chrome without lags or crush

I've had an acer 11", older model than in the topic
only one good thing - the battery is really good - 8+ hours and charged in couple hours in full

    • can you connect to a windows network [i need to copy files from server to laptop sometimes before travel]?

  • Is there an RDP client?

  • Looks not bad, anyone has any comment on it's keyboard?

  • save $1 by buying silver…

actually silver doesn't ship to aus. shame

  • Friends, It does not have an ssd so be wary. Its emmc storage so it will be slower and more prone to failure (essentially an sd card soldered to the board)

    • Its emmc storage

Probably will not matter for ChromeOS, but for people wanting a full Linux/Crouton install, better to get a different chromebook with real ssd.

(essentially an sd card soldered to the board)

      Hardly! Its not that bad.

      • Friend, in terms of speed its closer to an sd card than an ssd. Obviously to those using chrome os it will matter little but the title was misleading.

About the closest replacement I have seen for a Toshiba Chromebook 2 (2015)

    Just needs a backlit keyboard!

On that note, got to give a big tick to Amazon. My Toshiba 2015 failed (battery charge/fail issue, common problem) after 11 months. Refunded me the total cost, inc postage (both ways), basically no questions asked. Only catch though, they wanted it returned via economical postage, so used seamail. Took 3 months to arrive!!!

  • Quick question on RAM on these things. I find Chrome on windows a real memory hog and wouldn't get a windows laptop with less than 8gb RAM. Is the Chromebook version of chrome less memory intensive? Thinking of getting this for the wife to use with online MS Word and a fair bit of xero useage so there is often alot of open tabs, is 4gb RAM enough. Thanks in advance.

    • +4

4gb will work great for that use. 4gb on chromeOS is the same as about 10 or 12 on a Windows laptop.

  • Cloud offerings continually grow, plex is one of those FYI https://www.plex.tv/features/cloud/

  • I'm still waiting on the Samsung Chromebook Pro.

  • I love Chromebooks, they are especially ideal if you have friends or family who just want something that works and won't ever break for no reason.

  • As someone who works with Chromebooks on a daily basis, don't go Acer, cheap build, falls apart quick, get a Dell if you are serious about getting one.

  • Does chromebook handle 4G wireless dongles does it do torrent and file manager to check the saved torrent.

  • +1

Bought one (with shipping, it's currently around AUD$400). I've tried and failed to dual boot Linux on my desktop PC so this will be a suitable alternative that will probably replace my ageing Nexus 7 tablet in the long run as well. Hope it's as good as all the reviews say!
