  • Worth?

    • If you're looking to pay ~$2000 for a laptop with the specs of a ~Dell XPS15, sure it's worth.

      ????

      • Last time I bought an xps lx502 I was pretty disappointed
So not too sure this time around
Probably reason I'd consider this is because of its look
And a razor blade is too hard to get 😄

        • yes, they have made anything that can cause an injury hard to get in australia

  • +1

These get good reviews. Sure, costs much more than a standard build laptop with equiv specs, but its an ultrabook!

    • +1

Just wondering is 8 gb is enough and

      • Really depends what you want to use it for. I would generally suggest at least 8gb, that would be general web browsing, light gaming, office applications. If you were looking to do video editing you would want to look for something bit higher end than this, but it would still work.

Bought this using the previous ebay deal. Laptop shipped late but arrived earlier than the ETA they gave me (ETA 15/03..arrived on 08/03).

    • Right GPU fan makes a crackling noise every time it starts running. Sounds like the fan blades are hitting something within the enclosure. So every time something resource intensive starts up, it gets noisy.
    • Haven't noticed the infamous coil whine so far. Probably because of the fan.
    • Laptop stops responding every now and then. Although, I do feel this might be something to do with the OS. Will do a fresh install of Windows 10 once they fix the fan.
    • Dell Support has been quite good with the responses. During the first call they made me run a diagnostics test. I recorded a video of the fan noise/thuds and sent it to the second person. During the third call, they agreed there is an issue and have now booked me in for an onsite tech visit to replace the motherboard. Hopefully, that fixes the issue.

Overall, not a good experience with a brand new (premium?) product. Especially when the missus went "Tch tch, told ya not to get a Dell". Fingers crossed that the tech can resolve it when he/she comes in.

      Get a business laptop.

Why do people spend so much money on consumer stuff only to end up complaining?

      • Why do people spend so much money on consumer stuff only to end up complaining?

because equivalent business laptop is more expensive?

      • Is the Lenovo T60 a business laptop? Work gave me it and it's garbage.

        • It is a business laptop. It is also 10 YEARS OLD!!!

    • Haha not gonna get it now 😄 Saved me 2k

    • Update #1

Dell tech failed to show up yesterday as promised. Since I didn't get a call to reschedule, I called them up to check what's the issue. Turns out they were having problems procuring the parts required for the repair. An 'escalation' later, I get another email asking me to schedule another appointment. So I booked it in for today.

I got a call earlier today from the local tech that the parts are still not available and they won't be coming in till then.

Me: So when will you come to fix the laptop?
      Them : ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Me : Is there an ETA for the parts?
      Them : We're not sure.
      Me : Thanks!

Called ProSupport again and they were bewildered that the local tech informed me that there is no ETA for the parts. By this point, I'd had enough. I told them I would like them to take back the laptop and give me a refund. He tried to convince me otherwise but I didn't budge. So he pointed me in the wrong direction and asked me to contact customer support to get a refund. When I did, they pointed me back to ProSupport. After I got confirmed with CS that the correct procedure is to go through ProSupport, got transferred over to them.

This time the agent who picked up was more helpful. He has lodged a refund request which will take their Resolution manager 4-5 business days to get to. He was kind enough to send me a written confirmation that the refund request has been sent through.

I get it that I got unlucky and got a dud. Wish they had a better QA process.

  • Mine from the previous ebay deal has a stuck pixel on the screen, going to call dell today to either arrange a replacement or return

  • +1

mine arrived on the 8 March as well. love mine, I think it is a a good product.

I got my $100 from powerbuy almost immediately too. And will be flying out in 2 weeks time to claim the GST back.

All in all, this laptop only costed me $1,530.20. Happy days.

Keyboard is a bit small, however I get used to it rather quickly (at one stage I keep getting a 2 when i typed 1, so that gives you an idea of the keyboard's size).

It is quite too, no noise whatsoever, either that or I have a really high noise tolerance LOL.

    • just a query

how did you use a powerbuy?

i thought u need to buy direct for dell for this

      • Same? I didn't think you could stack Powerbuy with the Ebay deal?

        • did some more research

dell had a promotion that ended feb 28

you just email them your receipt if you spent more than $1500 and they give you $100 back

now they've grown wise and issue coupons for use on their own website

        • @YLD1: so if i bought this I'd get 20% off + another $100 to spend nxt time?

        • No, it is valid for ebay purchases , as I got my $100 in my account today. I was thinking it will take couple of months like cash rewards. But uploaded the receipt on Thursday. But I reserved the cashback before 28th.

      • Hi there

The promotion seems to have ended on 28 Feb. But I think they still have the 3% cashback thing.

When the item is shipped out, you get a DELL Australia invoice.

You just have to upload that to powerbuy.

Yes, you bought the item through ebay, but it is Dell Australia that sells it.

        Cheers

  • Always avoid what Graysonline is flooded with.

  • Do notice it has the much smaller battery, that's what ruins this deal for me

    • but it allows you to install a second hdd i believe

you could do it on the previous xps 15 9550

  • +1

its a great deal and I'm about to buy it

however, has anyone had experience in replacing the FHD with the 4K screen
ie if i buy a screen off ebay and replace it
    it should work right?

    • I doubt the colour gamut will be as good as the original though, or even a lot worse than the 1080p that comes with your laptop, might as well as get a decent monitor

  • +1

Got mine from the previous deal. No problems at all, solid machine that's relatively easy to upgrade. Yeah it's pricey, but if you need these specs for whatever you do at a decent weight with good build quality, hard to go wrong with this.

  • so the big question

    do you get this model

or get last years 9550 with 512SSD, 16GB ram and 4K display for $1799 refurbished?

    http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…

i'm leaning towards this one purely for the GPU

    • if you want that, you gotta act a bit quick. they tend to sell out quickly.

      • +1

they've been there for a month

        always coming back in stock

  • Last year I got the previous model: 9550. 16Gb RAM, 4K, 512GB. It was a nightmare. Thankfully I bought it from the local JB-HiFi and those guys have been very patient. I had it swapped 3 times. Coil whine noise, keyboard issues, sound crackling issues, I spent hours on the phone with Dell, reinstalled the system a few times even had the power adaptor swapped by Dell. I really wanted to keep it but I could not justify all the issues for over $2.5K

A couple of weeks ago, yet again I went to a local JB-HiFi store and had the latest 9560 512GB 4K price matched with Ebay, 20% off (surprise surprise!). Well, they were running their own 15% off of all laptops at that time.

I was so excited, hoping that the latest model will stay with me for much much longer.

I was wrong. Flickering screen (graphics driver issues), yet again crackling sound on both external and internal speakers, the system was slower than my 7yo Asus, it would freeze every 10 minutes or so. It was absolutely rubbish. Oh, and the whine coil noise was still present, not as loud as on the 9550 but it was still noticeable. On top of it, my Service Tag for some reason was not active and Dell Support wasn't able to… provide any support until this was going to be fixed by their IT team, without being able to provide any timeframe etc. Outrageous!

I am so glad I got it from JB, returning it was easy and took no more than 7 minutes at the counter.

What a disappointment though. The laptop is absolutely stunning and I love its 4K screen (despite some minor dramas with scaling). I really wanted to keep it.

    Another day Dell, another day…

    • did you factory reset the machine or did you install a fresh copy of windows on it?

      • +1

The 9550 - plenty of times.
The 9560 - I could not be bothered. I do not think that buying a new machine for 2.5K should involve spending time reinstalling the system, hoping that it might isolate all/some of the problems.

        • -4

Did you ever install the official drivers in a specific sequence from the dell site after reinstalling windows?

Maybe that was the only issue here.

        • @ozdesi: Yes I did and no it wasn't the only issue. Actually some of the drivers on the Dell website are not up to date. For example with the latest machine, the 9650 I was advised to download the latest driver directly from the Intel website.

        • @7es7ash: That sometimes happens with newer machines and these drivers are updated with time and become more stable.

        • +1

@ozdesi: I'd rather have a stable machine from day 1 😊 Especially if I paid for it so much money.

  • +3

I have the previous generation Dell XPS 9550 purchased in July of 2016. I love it but it does have the following issues.

Sound drivers are flaky. Basically default sound driver has average sound particularly when listening to music (it lacks depth). To compensate you can install Dell Waves Maxx Audio which basically enhances the sound (I'm not a sound engineer but the software acts as a software equaliser) to make it sound surprisingly good (I'm talking out of the speakers but also the headset port)…however, you have to make sure that you have particular settings otherwise it makes it sound quite unnatural. (see: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/xps-15-9550-do-not-u…)

More importantly, these Maxx Audio drivers have a bug whereby you get sound conflict, music will repeat itself and CPU will start to max out, requiring you to kill the Maxx Audio process and lose all sound on the system. A restart fixes this…until next time. I've ended up uninstalling Maxx Audio and living with inferior but reliable sound. I mention this sound issue because a previous poster also pointed it out. I've tried the "latest" drivers and latest Maxx Audio app a couple of times but can't get around this issue.

More importantly, if gaming, there is a known overheating issue that apparently exists with both my previous gen model, but also the current model. The GPU and CPU have crap factory installed Thermal paste. In addition, the Heatsinks on top of the CPU and GPU are apparently often bent when being installed and do not sit flush (and therefore do not conduct/draw as much heat as they should). Net effect, when gaming I can often hit 90+ degrees at which point the CPU will throttle down and I lose lots of FPS in game (Overwatch). Solution is to open it up (at which point I will then break 4 clips which are apparently impossible to NOT break) and reapply thermal paste, and re-sit Heat Sinks. I can also Undervolt the CPU which should also reduce heat.

To get around this at home and whilst playing games (Overwatch), I have reduced settings to make my GPU not work as hard, and also taken the novel approach of turning on an external fan and blowing air into the intake and exhaust ports of the laptop. Think of it as a Laptop Cooling stand without the stand!

With all of that being said, it is a pretty excellent laptop. At this price point and given its specs, it is a pretty good deal. I would purchase again, but wanted prospective purchasers to know the full situation before making a decision.

I tampered with my bios settings (9550) and tried to get the fastest boot time possible. Each time I did it, I bricked the motherboard. It got replaced 3 times over 3 weeks. I decided to leave the bios settings alone and it's been fine ever since. I love using it and it's a beautiful laptop. I'm waiting for thermal pads and paste to arrive to lower the temps.

I have no regrets despite the hiccups. It is a great laptop.

    • +2

Maybe it's just me but if I am spending this much 💰 on a laptop, I'd expect it to have zero issues. I shouldn't have to reinstall the OS just to make it usable. How this laptop ever passed quality check baffles me.
@shiny1 I'm trying to wrap my head around how altering BIOS settings caused your mobo to fail. What settings exactly were they? Should those options even exist in the first place? I wonder if their Alienware products are equally plagued with these same issues.

      • That's exactly what I thought. If it's in the bios settings, then it's user changeable. And they were tweaks to make things load faster, like adjusting POST behaviour. I suspect that it has something to do with the USB/Thunderbolt config, but that doesn't make any sense. Anyway, I gave up trying to play around in BIOS and just left it.

        • BIOS settings are mostly for power users who know what they are tweaking, just saying.
Stay away from tweaking settings like voltage or overclock if you want your system to be stable.

        • @ozdesi:
I changed one thing at a time, and I think it got to a point in the USB/Thunderbolt settings where things got messed up. I read online about other people getting 10 second boot times, and mine was 20 seconds. So if we had the same laptop, why is mine slower? So I just copied their bios settings. That didn't work as I thought.

        • @shiny1: you may have something connected to usb/thuderbolt port(s) when booting whereas your friend didn't. There can be other reasons like your boot order may have USB before HDD and so on causing delay in boot time.

Generally speaking, POST happens very fast nowadays. Older PC with FDD's took a while at POST not the modern laptops.

        • @ozdesi:
Nope. No inputs engaged when doing BIOS tweaking. Boot order was in the correct order as well. I forgot to mention that I replicated what I did in front of the tech guy who replaced my motherboard. He was as confused as I was. I'm pretty good with my way around computers, so this problem was quite strange.

  • Hi guys, quick question please - does this apply to only the one configuration? Can I adjust the options e.g. change to the larger battery? Thanks.

  • Hi, can anyone confirm whether Dell issues the invoice at the pre 20% discount price or at the discounted 20% price?

    • +1

Dell receipt will show the amount without the 20% discount. It will show the ebay amount

  • Do Cash Rewards not have Dell discount?

  • anyone dell xps 15 have been shipped yet?
