Want this, but need it to come down to <$2K.

    • 16gb is on AOC store with GST back.
Doubt 24gb will for a year.

  • it's almost the price of an M3 MacbookPro 36GB RAM (last week). Which one is better? I've never used an ARM Macbook Air, but an Intel Macbook Air was far behind a Macbook Pro

the M3 MBP is definitely better, I missed out on that deal and OW said they won't be restocking the M3 MBPs anymore. So this is my 2nd option.
Depending on your use case, for my workload/tasks (saas config/development, teams calls, minor excel, powerpoint etc) the performance gap is irrelevant.

      • Thanks.
Recently there were some sub $1500 deals for the 16GB M4 MB Air. Would $750 justify the 8GB difference? I know 256GB would be a bit tight these days, but I guess the SSD is replaceable, and not expensive.

It's way too dependant on your use case.

My work macbook pro non pro chip has 16gb of ram and I'm constantly in memory pressure zone/swap. But I run a small vm (totally not to bypass works proxy and security controls and bridge mode it straight to my router…) and it uses 3.5gb ram on its own. 24gb is great for anyone who knows they need it.

If you don't know. You probably don't need it. If it's a general or basic device for daily use, save the money and grab an m4 air next time it's sub 1.5k imo.

Buy an external m.2 to usb c drive and nvme drive for extra portable storage tbh. Ceebs messing with changing storage lol. Or just use cloud/local nas

        • would of been 13" not 15"

        • +2

IMO, the difference justifies the ram for longevity and my habit of having 40 different tabs open.
The SSD for M chip macs aren't replaceable, because it's soldered into the board. One might say it's technically possible but I'd say that it's not worth the risk.

My current work provided laptop a thinkpad x1 with 16GB ram and i7 gen10/11 is struggling to keep up with my workload esp when I have to screen share on team

      • I've been using a 24GB MBPro for a few years, and for the similar works as yours, I've never had any complaints about the performance. Supprisingly, in the past few weeks, I switched to use my daughter's i5-8th gen, 8GB Lenovo Thinkpad for my daily works, and it's still ok :P a bit of clumpsy coming from Mac-Win differences only

got the M1 MBP and M2 15 inch Air,
ended up sticking to 15 inch Air,
it depends what youre using it for it

SSD is very very far from replacable lol its soldered in since few gens.

i doubt you would tell the difference since youre asking , and Intel macs are not in the same ball park, not even same planet :)

      • thanks. May I know the reasons you chose that 15-inch Air over MBP? Was that MBP 13 or 14 or 16"?
I had used different 14" MBP: M1 32GB, M1 64GB, and M3 24GB, and could hardly see any performance differences.
The only thing I hate about my current M3 is that it's the entry-level chip, which only supports 1 external monitor.

        • Doesn’t the base M3 support dual external screens, in clamshell mode (lid closed)?

          https://support.apple.com/en-au/117373

          • @Orrelljet: Correct. Two external monitors (lid closed) or one external monitor with lid open (external + macbook screen)

          • +1

@Orrelljet: yes, it does. I should have said "3 screens" instead of "2 external screens".
Our office has 2x24" external monitors setup, so I wanted to use both of them and the MacBook screen.

I have M1 - 2020 model, still rocking. Battery is 92%, might last another decade lol
Anyone upgraded from M1's to 3 or 4 and see a lot of difference?

  • Thanks, grabbed one…..

missed the earlier deals and cant be bothered monitoring for a new deal that ill likely miss again. This is a good discount from retail and a little under Education price as well
