WOW that's cheap! Got my MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X for $779 when it came out, was a big upgrade from my HD7970.

I'd say if you can wait a couple of months, wait for VEGA from AMD. Either way prices will drop for GTX1070 & 1080 even further, and if VEGA is around $500 imported, it will be worth it. Not the RX 580 which comes out in April, wait for Vega, but only if you're willing to wait. Otherwise this is a good deal.

    • I'm running a 7950 and really want to upgrade but maybe it's worth waiting a bit longer in that case.

    • +1

You're always waiting for the next release with this attitude. If you want/need something and it's within budget then just buy it, as you did with the 1070.

      • My plan was to switch, and I have switched to a 4K setup that required HDMI 2.0 for 60Hz @ 4:4:4

If I could have waited with my HD7970 I would have, but running my TV @ 30Hz was not an option I wanted. And unfortunately TV's don't use display port. That's why I said if you're not in a hurry, you could wait. It's not like the prices for the 1070 & 1080 are going to go up. Nor is Volta coming out any time soon.

  • If anyone can help me, I am starting to work with 4K video editing in Davinci Resolve/Premiere.

Would this be any good compared to Rx480 ? RX480 seems to be on a good deal as well : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/295711#comment-4523826

    Thanks in advance !!

The 1070 is much better than the RX480. The 480 is comparable to the 1060.

      • +7

That's pretty bullshit, the RX480 is on par with the 1060 in pretty much most benchmarks.

        • -2

Ok, i might be wrong with the 'poor competitor' bit, but the 1070 still blows it out of the water

        • +1

@jackwoz: you would hope so for 2x the price

      • +1

yeah compare them on latest drivers and the RX480 is like 2-5% faster (than the 6gb). supports vulkan, better dx12 performance, has extra gig vram. supports xfire. no brainer between those 2.

        • Yep. I just checked it out and appears to be better than the 1060. I was going off the initial benchmarks but looks like AMD have improved it dramatically.

    • ' I am starting to work with 4K video editing in Davinci Resolve/Premiere.'

For who doing what, if i may ask?

      • Purely for myself/family. casual travel and home videos. Just started exploring the world of videography.

        • I'm not too familiar with video editing but I'm fairly certain that CPU is more important than GPU in this case. RX480 should be more than sufficient for 4k editing. Just make sure you're getting a good cpu.

        • Ah i see, hope you have enough disk space and bandwidth if you ever try to send anything. Also if you add any kind of fancy effects that cannot be parallelized(unsupported by GPU rendering) you can forget using your computer for a while. A long while.

1070 is faster but the 480 is MUCH better for the price, better than a 1060 for these programs (a 1070 is MUCH faster than a 1060 yet in this vid only beats the 480 by a little bit). According to https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=4971… Dvinci Resolve scales well with Crossfire so if you need more power later on you could buy a second 480 (1060 doesn't support SLI).

Oh thanks heaps for your input.

Now the confusing bit. There are so many types/versions/ of RX480. I'v read through some forums discussing which is the best amongst them. MSI sand XFX GTR seem to be the picks.

With the latest 20% ebay deal, this one is coming at a good price : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/232209616979?_trksid=p2055119.m14…

Can I go ahead with this model ?

        • Yeah, choosing the right model is confusing… It depends on many factors, like what you want from the card like low noise/better OC's/better support/power usage/RGB lighting etc. and of course pricing. MSI Gaming X seem to have the best cooling but from what I've seen, doesn't OC as well as the XFX GTR and MSI doesn't have the greatest support whereas XFX probably have the best for AMD. Gigabyte and Powercolor have worse components than reference but if you run them at stock speeds should perform okay. Asus seems to have put an overkill cooler on and good components but being more of a copy and paste design doesn't really work as well as it should on the 480 (it was a disaster on the 390) and usually has a hefty price premium. The price on that card you linked isn't really a bargain, at least not compared to some that have been posted recently but it's still a good price, personally I'd go the GTR over MSI if they were same price.

You also need to think about whether you want to use any other media programs, since some still only support Cuda or have poor OpenCL support.

        • Apparently not a lot of difference between MSI GAMING X and MSI ARMOR OC apart from the LED lights and maybe slightly better cooling on the GAMING X. Good deal on the MSI ARMOR OC RX480 4GB on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Radeon-RX-480-ARMOR/dp/B01M368YOU about $250AU delivered.

          @AreYouAWiiizard:

Wow, thanks for your detailed response. I will be using Davinci Resolve for all my editing works which I think used cuda and open GL

I'll go the XFX way. PC gear seems to be having the cheapest local stock. https://www.pccasegear.com/products/36317/xfx-radeon-rx-480-…

          @hawkus81:

That is a superb price. Thanks for the link.

A quick question. For crossfiring when I have two RX480's, does different brand/versions cause any problems ? Do they need to match ?

        • @sundeepguntu: Different models don't matter though is recommended for best compatibility. Crossfire is extremely flexible, afaik it will run at the speed of the lowest clocked (though setting them the same should help lower issues from occurring). It's worth noting that many programs don't make use of Crossfire/SLI or can have poor scaling so it's really only worth it if you want to add it in later when the cards are really cheap (EOL/Used etc.) or you know the workloads you are going to do make good use of them.

    1-2months shipping…I think I'll wait a month and see how 1080prices are :)

    Thanks for info!

  • Ooft, these guys keep getting cheaper. They'll probably be free by the end of the year at this rate.

  • +1

    wow i paid around 400 for my 1060 about 5 months ago..fml

    • I feel ya, in the same boat. Paid $420~ for a 1060 in August. In hindsight it wouldn't have been a bad idea to keep using my R9 280X a little longer :(

      • I paid $650 for the 1070 and had issues with it a chunk of my ownership time, so don't fret. Shit happens.

      • Same here. I paid the exact same price for 1060 from Futu Online though that was a long while ago.

In hindsight though I sold my Radeon 380 card for about 250 dollars before the market price plummeted before Pascal released so it helped ease the pain of paying over 400 for a Mid end card.

It doesn't get me 60 Fps in Crysis 3 High preset but most other games will play close to 120 fps.

    • You need a CC with price protection

      • How many days do they usually cover?

        • +1

          Gomastercard/28degrees is 6 months.

      • actually i do have CC with price protection. I am fairly certain it was on the 28 degrees mastercard..

But this was on ebay 20% off sale, so i dont think prices have really dropped on futu

  • Any deal for the 1080 ??

  • Why would it take them 1-2 months to ship the product? Is that typically just a way to cover their ass in case it takes ages to send or will I really still be waiting for this thing in the middle of May?

    • It'd mean they're out of stock, and that's the timeframe the supplier has estimated. They usually try to come in ahead of that so that customers aren't annoyed with delays, but equally it's likely in that timeframe. i.e. it shouldn't be more than 2 months, but it may well be 4-6 weeks.

    • haha. so they can wait for the market price to come down before buying from their supplier and it's no longer a bargain!

  • I am thinking of upgrading my monitor in the future to at least a 34" Ultrawide 4k.

I should probably keep saving for the 1080ti, yeah?

    Games will be:

    Battlefield 1 (and 4)
GTA V (Still yet to play it)
    Just Cause Series
    Beseige

    • +2

1080Ti is currently the only card that can push 60fps at 4K at/near max settings, so I'd say yes.

      • That's using anti-aliasing, isn't it? Will anti-aliasing be completely necessary on a 4k given the performance hit?

        • +1

Without AA I believe, can't see it mentioned on most benchmarks I just checked.

    • +1

I jumped from 7850HD and now running 4k on a 1070 gtx and everything apart from strategy games run great at 3840*2160 sitting at 60 fps on average on the newer games without tweaking much.. now if your 34" is running above 60Hz then you will struggle. Tested Arkham Knight, Battlefield 1 , Call of Duty , Just Cause 3 and Far Cry Primal so far…. big step up from 720p for me especially with gsync never really realized I had so much tearing. Watchdogs 2 had some slowdown in places it was new might need to be patched and optimized. Call of duty IW was unplayable on my 7850 couldn't get passed the menu.. ran fine on 1070.

Actually had issues with Quantum Break ok at lower res on 7850, but was some tearing on the 1070 at 4k got the latest patch and the install broke and then removed it for a later install.

    • Ultrawide 4k is between 4k and 8k.. so its best to wait for the gtx11xx series or Vega … does ultrawide 4k even exist ..I though it was just 1440p Ultrawide which is amazing .. and needs to same "horsepower" as 4k .

      Ultrawide Master race! /o/

      so no .. the 1080ti can't do 4kUW .. only 4k and 1440pUW

Is there a way to filter out these deals so I can stop curling into a fetal position, sucking my thumb and crying in regret over my purchase a few months ago? 😭

  • +1

Currently running a GTX760, play mostly COD and BF. Will wait for further price drops.

    • I'm on a GTX 580.
All I can play decently is battlefield 3.

But yes, will wait for further drops.

      • Or, check the secondhand GPU market on places like OCAU if you find a good deal, get in first, and are willing to pay for postage, etc.

  • Nice deal but I just bought 1060 the other day so I need to find reasons not to buy this:
    1. This is a discontinued product
    2. Normal price is ~AUD 500 shipped to MEL in a week)
    3. Too big, coil whine, etc…

  • Don't forget the 1070 has issues with the quality of RAM chips. At $900 for SLI you're better off grabbing a 1080ti for a couple of hundred more and knowing you won't have to deal with SLI bugs.

  • No longer available, new price 354 euro delivered ($494 AUD)

    • Thanks for the heads up.
