What to drink when I get home?

Hi All,

So each night I get home after work and have a beer or 2. I like it cause it is cold and refreshing. I am going to stop drinking for a while and need to replace my after work drink with something.

I don't want to drink soft drink due to the sugar content, don't want to drink hot drinks so I guess I'm stuck with water or cordial.

Any suggestion from the people out there?

P. S I do not like ginger beer

    flavoured mineral water is good.

    • +2

Why not save some money and drink watered down fruit juice? :)

      • +1

still has heaps of sugar (fructose) in it! just as bad as soft drinks!

        • +7

Watered down as in one part fruit juice, 3 parts water.

        • +8

          So does cordial:

I don't want to drink soft drink due to the sugar content, don't want to drink hot drinks so I guess I'm stuck with water or cordial.

          :/

        • I think fructose is better than what they have in softdrinks wouldnt you say? Well for something like freshly squeezed that is

        • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: Not always… You can buy no added sugar varieties (though granted the availability compared to places like the UK is dreadful).

I prefer to just squeeze some lemon juice in water though anyway (then leave the lemon in water in the fridge - it's surprising how long the flavour lasts). I also don't know why so many people suggest buying coles water - it just tastes like tap water! If your water is bad then just buy a filter jug instead of wasting so much plastic/energy.

        • @callum9999:

Not always… You can buy no added sugar varieties

Of course, just like sugarless soft drinks.

If your water is bad then just buy a filter jug instead of wasting so much plastic/energy.

Agreed and add money to the list of waste.

I see discussions between users in the US, and there seems to be so much more variation there for flavoured mineral water. Wish some more of it could make its way here.

  • +13

    Give mineral water a go.

    • +1

Tried it tonight, not bad. Will source some flavored stuff next.

      • +12

Soda water with ample fresh lime juice - yummy! Could even add other fresh fruits or mint for flavour.

      • Just add maybe 10% fruit juice to give it different flavours :) Much better than all juice, or that fake sweetener crap in cordial.
You could also try making iced tea, just brew lots of tea, water it down or ice it, add some fruit or honey, done. Make a big jug, lasts a few days.

      • +7

Squeeze some real lemon juice in it. Google it's health benefits.

      • +1

        Don't buy the flavoured stuff!

Go buy some Ribena. Put a small touch of that + Cole's 75c mineral water. Add ice + lime. Yum! And really freakin cheap!

      • Another alternative is the Pump/Powerade/Lqd+ flavours that you spray into the mineral/soda/plain water.

        They're sugar-free (so have artificial sweeteners instead… :-?)

    • +1

Yep just got onto mineral water.
Cheap, healthy and satisfies that itch for fizzy drinks.

Plus I swear it gets colder in the fridge than normal water.

      • +5

Plus I swear it gets colder in the fridge than normal water.

        Not possible.

Aside from spatial variations within the fridge and perturbations, everything in the fridge asymptotically approaches the same temperature.

        • +10

          Thank mr science man

Obviously it doesn't actually, it just seems colder.
I've had other people confirm they feel the same way.

        • +16

          @theguyrules:

          HOYVIN GLAVIN!

        • But we're talking about carbonated drinks. I also find that drinking freshly poured soda water from the fridge is much much colder than still water from the fridge.

Doesn't air pressure etc have something to do with it? Same reason why fizzy drinks can freeze over the instant you open them when they're super chilled?

        • +5

          @blue-dinosaur:

Doesn't air pressure etc have something to do with it? Same reason why fizzy drinks can freeze over the instant you open them when they're super chilled?

Yes. Carbonated beverage bottles are pressurised. When you open them, the CO2 gas inside is released to atmospheric pressure consequently undergoing adiabatic expansion and cooling approximately in accordance with the ideal gas law. The pressurised concentration of CO2 dissolved in the beverage is then supersaturated at atmospheric pressure and due to the agitation of the abrupt pressure drop, the CO2 rapidly effervesces which, as an endothermic process, absorbs heat from, thereby cooling, the solvent — the beverage.

@Scrooge McDuck:exactly what I was going to say.

        • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: well someone did thermodynamics…

        • @Scrooge McDuck: I new you worked for coke. Quick tell me the secret formula

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

But wouldn't this mean that once opened, these drinks are cooler than the fridge temp? So the above comment was correct.

So…all bottles in fridge at same temp. Open pressurised bottle, endothermic reaction, cooler drink…

        • @moza:

But wouldn't this mean that once opened, these drinks are cooler than the fridge temp?

          Yes.

So the above comment was correct.

There are many comments above, to which are you referring?

          This comment is incorrect:

          @theguyrules:

Plus I swear it gets colder in the fridge than normal water.

In the fridge it is approximately the same temperature in accordance with:

          @Scrooge McDuck:

Aside from spatial variations within the fridge and perturbations, everything in the fridge asymptotically approaches the same temperature.

It only becomes cooler after opening, not "in the fridge".

        • @Scrooge McDuck: prove it

    Milk? Yogurt?

    • +3

Errrr Milk, give me a crab juice.

Maybe Nesquick would be a good option?

I don't like Milo either, malt, no thanks.

      • +2

Maybe Nesquick would be a good option?

But aren't you trying to avoid sugar?

How about a protein shake? They're nutritious, gentle on your metabolism and satiating.

I'd recommend WPC for economy. Bulk Nutrients and Venom Protein are both excellent value and produce a range of flavours.

        • -1

Except the bioavailability of their products sucks :/

        • @Jules_d1:

          Why?

        • -1

          @Scrooge McDuck:

It's a lesser quality protein. Not as purified and filtered as other products that have been through hydrolysis.

For example, if you compared 2 proteins that have the EXACT nutritional content except one has been hydrolsed and the other hasn't, the body will absorb more of the hydrolised one where as a lot of the nutrients from basic protein will be passed through the body. Even though a protein may say there's 26g of protein per serve, if its a crappy protein your body might only get 16-18g of that whereas a top quality on will be 24-26g.

Its not a huge deal for the average punter but for those looking for performance it makes a difference.

If you compare the bottom of the barrel cheap proteins to the fully hydrolised proteins, you can argue that even though the price tag is much higher, it works out cheaper if your comparing how much protein actually gets absorbed.

Bulk nutrients is better than venom though.

        • @Jules_d1:

It's a lesser quality protein. Not as purified and filtered as other products that have been through hydrolysis.

Hydrolysis is the breaking of larger molecules into smaller ones by adding water. In the case of whey protein hydrolysate, some of the proteins are broken down into shorter chain peptides. This is what your digestive system naturally does with protein, so this pre-digestion speeds absorption.

Hydrolysis is not purification nor filtration.

If you compare the bottom of the barrel cheap proteins to the fully hydrolised proteins, you can argue that even though the price tag is much higher, it works out cheaper if your comparing how much protein actually gets absorbed.

          So show me the protein content, BV and price of your cost effective source of hydrolysed whey protein;

and we'll compare it to WPC from Bulk Nutrients and/or Venom Protein.

Bulk nutrients is better than venom though.

          Why?

        • @Jules_d1:

          Well?

      • Honestly, get a half decent hand blender, get some frozen berries or whatever fruit (bananas etc), blend them up with a bit of milk and some ice and you are sorted.

You end up with something that actually tastes good, and is actually good for you for the most part with just the natural sugars. You can even make whatever flavor you want.

The downside is that it takes a little longer (really not much though, hand blenders are easy to clean/rinse these days). You don't even have to use milk you can try yoghurt, or even your soda water.

If you do this for a while you will form a habit and the hassle of making it won't even be an issue.

    • Ayran or sweet Lassi. Yum

Coconut water. Soda water with lemon or lime juice.

    • Coconut water has been my savior recently. No better way to feel refreshed while being hydrated. Look out for the brands that have less or no sugar.

    • Coconut water is great - make sure you try a couple different brands though to find one you like some taste sweeter than others - and if you want to avoid sugar don't get the fancy flavoured ones.
I like Cocobella, Pure Tropics (Aldi) & Cocomax (Asian Stores)

    soda water
    tonic water (better with gin)
    mineral water
    diet soft drinks
soda stream with half-mix of the flavoring
    iced tea

  • Iced coffee?

Caffeine input late at night is a concern

        • Thanks some good ideas. If the marketing guff is true, ill be drinking my way to 0.00

      • +4

        What about a herbal tea?

I'd recommend 麦茶 mugicha, a Japanese roasted-barley tea. It tastes toasty with slight bitterness and is warming hot or refreshing chilled.

You can buy a box of large bags for ~$5 from an Asian supermarket which should last a while.

        • Thanks Scrooge! I'm going to try this - sounds delicious.

  • +6

    DIY iced tea +/- lemon/honey?

All the goodness of tea without the added sugar found in bottled tea.

    • Ice tea sounds like a good idea. The only problem is I like the ice tea sweet, which I guess isn't a huge deal.

I use to eat at a place called Nudo back in the late 90's near the crn of Lt Bourke and Russell Street. Greatest ice tea ever, I have never found that exact flavor again and all ice tea since then has played second fiddle to that tea.

      • +1

I've just started home made iced tea, mixed down with mineral water! Add in some lemon and maybe a tiny bit of sugar, it's delicious.

    • Yeah black tea w/ lemon, or blackcurrent/fruity herbal tea. Great when chilled, zero sugar.

    • Can also get some nice teas from T2, for iced tea usage

    • This.

My recipe is Teabag with enough hot water to cover the tea bag and let soak for ~2-3mins or depending on desired strength. Add honey (?) or 2 tsp sugar now then fill with cold water. Sugar/honey optional I guess. Tastes almost like Lipton iced Tea and was my go to drink at an old work place.

  • +2

Brewed tea and store it in jugs in fridge.

  • +16

Why not just water? Get a water bottle and you will be set. That's what a true ozbargainer drinks

    • +3

I do drink water, all day long actually, but after a while it gets a bit boring. Want to celebrate the fact that I'm home with a tasty beverage.

      • +7

        Add mint leaves to water

        • +1

          And lemon/orange peels :)

  • -2

Coke. Oh wait - you don't drink that!

How about that Daily Juice company orange juice that's got the pulp in there?
(Be careful of laxative effect if you drink too much in one go!)

    • No I love Coke and drink it almost every day. Just don't want to drink 2 cans of it at 6pm when I get home.

      • +17

I strongly recommend you drop the coke from almost everyday to once and a while or a treat.

Seen the side effects of too much and when i did i dropped it in a heart beat.

        • Like? Rotting teeth?

        • +8

          @bennos:

It's just pouring highly refined sugar with zero nutritional value into your body. Anyone who has ever been a daily Coke drinker and stopped will tell you they feel better as a result.

        • @bennos:
My brother used to drink Coke everyday, until he went to the dentist and they told him he had burned all the enamel off his teeth and a couple of cavities. He thought that drinking it through a straw would bypass his teeth.

He ended up having to use enamel toothpaste to repair the damage and get fillings. He stopped drinking Coke altogether after that!

        • @LockieF:

The sad thing is it's nothing more than habit. Once you stop drinking it, after a while you don't miss it, and eventually you get to a point where it's too sweet to drink very often and you will wonder how you did it all of these years.

I think I have 1 can of coke a week max these days. I still enjoy it sometimes, most other softdrinks are too sweet though.

  • +7

What about cold tea? I do that in summer, brew a pot of green tea, and have it cold the next day.

  • +9

Pepsi Max. 20 minutes in the freezer, and you're good to go.

    No sugar.

    • +2

      Nah mate coke zero

Pepsi Max is the superior beverage

      • +5

Look at Mr Rich over here, I bet you drink your coke zero in a solid gold cup.

        • @Putnum: I spell it exactly the same way! Sometimes I'll splurge maybe with a few more -eu I enellinelinyines for good measure.

        • @Putnum:

Yeah well i have lost 30 Kgs on having pepsi max and vanilla and none of the full sugar based drinks…… For diet wise they really do help. Granted i also use a straw so they don't ruin my teeth.

        • -2

@sithsylar: phenalenalynenaleinelenyignenaline eats away at your spinal cord so you would be losing weight.

  • +3

A pint of raspberry lemonade cordial with a dash of bitters served with crushed ice is nice and refreshing, definitely hits the spot!

  • +2

    Green tea.

    • Slightly concerned about the caffeine levels.

Also I don't consider green tea as a drink I smash down at 6pm at night to refresh me. Sure in winter I will drink jasmine tea, but I don't think green tea is a "beer" substitute. Saying that I could be wrong.

Herbal Tea.. No Caffiene and no sugar.. simples

This is a funny thread about a yug that doesn't want to drink water, alcohol, Tea, coffee and soft drink when he gets home.

    Milo in cold Voss water.

    • +6

      Milo in water? Shudder

      • +2

Milo is meant to be had standalone or with a touch of milk only.

  • I don't want to drink soft drink due to the sugar content, don't want to drink hot drinks so I guess I'm stuck with water or cordial.

I am quite sure cordial has sugars as well.
What work do you do? If you are indoor all day for work then you could go for a stroll/walk in the park. It might help you avoiding the beers…

    • Office work. Though i ride to and from work each day, about 5km each way.

Understand cordial has sugar, guess i meant didn't want large amounts of sugar like soft drinks. Also cordial doesn't have the carbonation like beer.

      • Why does carbonation bother you?

        • +1

I want carbonation. Bubbles are exciting

        • @bennos:

Ah, I understand what you meant now.

  • +3

I was like that for a while, started out as 2. Then became 1 before dinner, 1 during, 1 after, then became 2 before….etc etc starts to add up and you can be downing 4-5 a night quite easily.

I replaced it with a SodaStream. Now I drink sparkling water with a squeeze of lime or lemon juice and some ice.

    • Yes, 1 has turned into 3. I can see 3 turning into 6.

  • +2

Chamomile tea (probably can get flavoured ones as its pretty strong ), helps wind you down :)
