David Jones American Express Card - $99 Annual Fee, 30,000 DJ Membership Rewards Points or 22,500 Qantas Points

230

David Jones American Express Card. A seldom used card, but could be beneficial for many users and purpose of the post is to bring it to your attention as it can fly under the radar, yet provide good value for some.

Key points of the Offer:

  1. $99 Annual Fee
  2. 30,000 David Jones Membership Rewards points as a bonus once you spend 3 times outside of David Jones (no minimum spend - just 3 transactions)
  3. You can opt in to earning Qantas Points, at a conversion rate of 4 DJMR = 3 QFF (75%)
  4. First supplementary card free for first year, each and every card thereafter is $29/year.
  5. Free Standard Delivery when shopping at David Jones online or in store.
  6. Complimentary Gift Wrapping when shopping at David Jones online or in store.

Probably the biggest point: Customers applying for the David Jones American Express Staff Card or Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other David Jones Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

This means you qualify for the sign-on bonus even if you hold another American Express Issued Credit Card (eg. Amex Explorer)

Earn Rates of DJMR Points:

  • Earn 3 Reward Points per dollar spent at major supermarkets and petrol stations
  • Earn 2 Reward Points per dollar spent at David Jones
  • Earn 1 Reward Point per dollar spent everywhere else

DJMR Points convert relatively poorly to most FF Programs (2:1 in most cases), but the conversion to SPG Points is the same as Ascent Premium at a rate of 1 DJMR = 0.5 SPG Points.

A better option to convert to FF Programs is to convert to SPG first (2:1), then convert to your airline of choice at 1:1 (35 partners - Asia Miles/Krisflyer/Velocity/American/Alaska). Convert 20,000 SPG Points, and you'll receive an additional 5,000 airline miles.
* So for 40,000 DJMR Points, you'd get 25,000 Airline Miles, being a better redemption than going direct from DJMR.

Effective Earn Rate if Opt-in to QFF:

  • Earn 2.25 Reward Points per dollar spent at major supermarkets and petrol stations
  • Earn 1.5 Reward Points per dollar spent at David Jones
  • Earn 0.75 Reward Point per dollar spent everywhere else

So naturally, its going to be beneficial to those with high super market & petrol spend.

Why do I think this is deal worthy?

  • Many OzBargainers might not know about this card - it is a cheap source of bonus points that majority of users would be eligible for (14 referral links exist today which is the smallest for a consumer Amex)
  • Many OzBargainers might have considerable Amex Gateway Points from the Explorer Card offers that have been widely taken up by users on this site. Gateway Points & DJMR Points convert at 2:1 to SPG, and SPG converts to Marriott at 1:3. There is extremely good value to be had from these redemptions… an example or two to demonstrate.

Example of a Business Class Return Trip + 7 Nights Accomodation in Vietnam using Explorer + this card for 1 person

  • 100,000 Gateway Points from Current Amex Explorer Deal + 40,000 DJMR Points from this deal (see below for bonus) = 70,000 SPG Points (2:1) = 210,000 Marriott Points (1:3)
  • Redeem 200,000 Marriott Points for a Flights & Nights Package which gives you 7 Nights at a Marriott Category 1-5 Property + 55,000 United Airlines Miles.
  • Buy 5,000 United Miles for Approximately $200 AUD (can do this direct with United)
  • Fly Thai Airways Business Class to Vietnam (or anywhere SE Asia) + minimal taxes for 60,000 United Miles for the return trip.

Total cost of Vietnam Holiday = $395 + $99 + $100 taxes + $200 United Miles + $200 flights to Phu Quoc = $994 for a week in Vietnam including Business Class Airfares & Accommodation.

Example of Business Class Return Trip + 7 Nights Accomodation in Japan using Explorer + this card for 2 people.

  • 2 x 100,000 Gateway Points from Current Amex Explorer Deal + 30,000 Referral Bonus (because you'd refer your spouse/friend) + 6,000 due to minimum spend of $1500 each + 2 x 40,000 DJMR Points from this deal + 15,000 Referral Bonus (again, because you'd refer your spouse/friend) = 165,500 SPG Points (2:1) = 496,500 Marriott Points
  • Redeem 360,000 Marriott Points for a Flights & Nights Package which gives you 7 Nights at a Marriott Category 8 Property (Eg. The Prince Sakura Tower Tokyo) + 132,000 United Airlines Miles.
  • Redeem 72,000 Marriott Points = 30,000 United Miles.
  • Fly Thai Airways Business class to Tokyo + minimal taxes for 160,000 united miles for the return trip for you both.

Total cost of Tokyo Holiday = $395 x 2 + $99 x 2 + $200 flight taxes = $1,188 for a week in Toyko for 2 away including Business Class Airfares & Accommodation.

So yeah. I feel there is value to be had from this card if you are wise in your use of the points bonus.

I don't quite understand your maths:
"360,000 Marriott Points = 7 Nights at a Marriott Category 8 Property (Eg. The Prince Sakura Tower Tokyo) + 132,000 United Airlines Miles."

Where did the 132,000 UA miles come from?

"56,000 Marriott Points = 25,000 United Miles, leaving you to buy 3,000 United Miles direct from UA (maybe $200 total cost)"

Where does this 56k points come from? The left over Marriot points should be 61,500

    • Sorry, you redeem 360,000 Marriott points for a 7 nights and flights package. This gives you 7 consecutive nights at a Marriott property + a bundle of airline miles of your choosing. I should have made this clearer.

Different properties are ranked into different categories, so a category 8 property is more points than a category 5, etc.

Same as the airline miles - different airlines give you different amount of points with the flights and nights package.

Lastly, you convert the 56,000 Marriott into 25,000 United miles directly. I don't believe you can convert the full amount of 61,500 Marriot you have leftover as it's not a ratio, but rather a set amount you can convert.

        I'm still not understanding

      • "360,000 Marriott points for a 7 nights and flights package"
        Serious?? Show me!
This sounds too good to be true.

        • Well, it's your lucky day, it is true:

          http://www.marriott.com/rewards/usepoints/morepack.mi

        • @robbo135: Wow that is quite amazing.
Do UA miles transfer to any other airlines that do business to Asia for 80k points?
Just looked up a review for Thai business class syd to bkk, and they still do angled flat seats. So don't think I'm going to waste points for that.

        • @talismansa:

UA is part of star alliance. Some singapore flights can be booked with UA miles, but has to be done over the phone.

      • Note that the 7 nights must be booked consecutively at one property, cannot be split up.

OP, the example you posted for the return business class trip for 1 person is no longer relevant, the explorer is no longer offering 110,000 as a sign on, so anyone silly enough to sign up to both cards today isn't going to have enough points to redeem the package you have suggested.

They will only have 120,000 (80,000 from Explorer and 40,000 from DJ) Amex points = 60,000 SPG points = 180,000 Marriott points which isn't enough to redeem any of their packages…

    • That's correct - it was an example for those who may have taken up the earlier offer looking for something to use their bonus on.

I think there is sufficient detail to give someone who may not know about these redemption offers 'a taste' of what's potentially out there and worth exploring and learning about.

If they want to chase that option, there are still ways to obtain that many points with one card (plat charge will do it), but at an increased cost. Is that cost too much? That's up to the individual to assess.

  • Thanks OP, I reckon this post should be permanently enshrined on ozbargain wiki!!

This card can only be used at petrol stations which I think is kinda pointless.

Platinum edge card has better earn rates and if you used it to buy WISH gift cards at CR you'd get 3 ascent pts per dollar and also 5% off your petrol when filling up at caltex.

So really this is for the 40k signup bonus and possibly AMEX card numbers for Amex promos BUT they charge $29 per supplementary cardholder after the first year.

This would really be a signup and dump card.

  • Shame about the 18 month cool down period after other amexes as I was considering switching from the Platinum Edge since they ended the included flight - guess I'll be forced to find a replacement just before the fee is charged.

Out of interest how do these points/earn rate compared to the Ascent MR points?

    • Only those that held a David Jones American Express are excluded from getting sign on bonus.

Platinum edge holders will qualify for this deal provided no DJ Amex held in last 18months.

So yeah. Carefully read the condition - it only excludes David Jones cardholders of last 18months :)

QFF stacks up quite well compared to edge. DJMR rewards is 1:0.625 when converting to airline miles via SPG. (Normally 1:0.5 going direct direct from DJMR)

  • @tizey I think there's also the issue of combining the points of 2 different card accounts.
For my platinum card I can't transfer my points into my wife's FF program because it's not under the same name.
Can you confirm that you can actually combine these points with your partner?

    • You can transfer SPG points to family members residing at the same address as you, provided you have had the same address with SPG for 30 days. There is no limit of transferring miles with SPG this way.

Edit: you can also transfer 50k amex points per year to another person. But has to be same MR program, so she would have to have the same card type in her own name.

  • Max explorer card bonus is now 80,0000:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/290168

  • If you targeting points from supermarket spend the Platinum Edge is a better deal. Also has a1:1 transfer rate to most airlines.

  • I am quiet keen to apply for this card and any other card which help earns SPG points (already have the explorer, not sure if there are more in the non amex cards in the mkt earning SPG. I think US has some great SPG signup bonuses). The only thing holding me back is that I recently applied for the ANZ FF Black, exactly a month ago. So not sure how long I should wait before I apply to A. get an approval and B. have minimal impact on my credit score.

Post that - I am keen to get those 50K ff on the westpac card. Read on one of the blogs - that it makes sense to apply for 2 cards on the same day.

    • I reckon you'd be OK to apply for both in one day, given a month rest.

On average, I've applied for one card a month without issue. My record over a 7 day period is 3 - all approved. Credit score took maybe 100-120 point hit (hard to assess exactly as that particular month had a total of 4 credit card applications for a total of 156 point drop, which recovered 93 points the next month), so yeah - thats what I can add that may be of value to you.

righto - does give me some confidence…wud apply soon :)…sme points cmin ya way…

Note - I've updated the original post to reflect more accurate numbers if you combine this offer with the Amex Explorer (which you qualify for the bonus points for as there is a difference in T&C's that allow it).

    • Hi Op, where did they mention the 2:1 conversion rate for DJMR Points to FF points? I have read the T&C for DJMR, couldn't find any conversion rates for it.
It says "1 David Jones Reward Point = 1 Membership Rewards point" in the description of DJ Credit card page. I assume "1 Membership Rewards point" normally have 1:1 conversion rate for most airline partners?

      • If I login to the rewards page for the card, that is what the options are. They are DJ membership rewards points z not Ascent membership rewards points or gateway membership rewards points that have higher conversion rates to FF.

They said, the conversion to SPG is the same as Ascent/Gateway, which I believe is great use of these points.

  • Just applied - seems like a great offer - used a random referral link as somebody did for my AMEX Explorer and I thought all my Christmas have come at once!

  • Me too
