  • Would a 2.5 star energy efficiency rating be really bad?

    • SRF533DLS is 525kWh per year.
      RF522ADUSX5 is 414kWh per year
EHE5267SAD is 368 kWh per year

Shouldn't take long to do quick economic calcs for operating costs using your $/kWh (from electricity bill), over the fridge life (say 10 years). IMHO the better energy efficiency rating fridges are fat more expensive presently. This will change in the next few years but if you need a fridge now, Samsung is way attractively priced.

Hi thanks, I was doing some googling to see the costs.

If anyone else was interested http://www.energyrating.gov.au/calculator has some costs on it.

        525L Fridge - 10 year running cost

        2.5 Star : $1,726.41
        3.5 Star: $1,329.33
        4 Star : $1,166.48

Considering the 10 year cost is a series of future cashflows incurred quarterly, using 5% discount rate (same as the cost of money/typical home loan), it would look better to save money upfront.

        • @quasims: yep, future value of a dollar, i wouldn't say 5% per year, but to have 5-600 dollars now is worth more than in 10 years time, also 10 years is a hell of a long time for an investment… better off to go for the 3-6 year pay off period.

IE if you could invest that 500 dollars now what would you have at the end of the investment period.

        • @wisc: I thought for people considering to buy smallish fridges the investment should be in their offset accounts. I've bought one and put the $1000 saved in my loan to offset the interest. I've assume zero salvage value for the three fridges while assessing.

        • @wisc:

Those calculations assume electricity costs won't go up.

They also ignoring environment damage. Still, the environment is just an 'externality' ignored by most economic models 😒

        • @tightwad:

People are entitled to have their opinions on environment/climate change.

A bit off the topic but clearly people at the lower end of the food chain cannot afford to buy expensive cars that turn off at the signal just to give a 'feel good' factor to the owner that they're saving the environment. Also newer hybrid cars that use same old brown coal electricity vs the petrol. Kind of defeats the purpose, IMHO.

        • @quasims:

people at the lower end of the food chain cannot afford to buy expensive cars that turn off at the signal

Being lower end of the food chain does not mean lower level of common sense. People can turn off the cars by themselves, if they are keen on saving the environment.

        • @ms:

does not mean lower level of common sense

Depends what you call common sense, IMO stopping engine at signals introduces unnecessary start cycles which in turn can exponentially reduce engine life… I'd still call it feel good factor… if one can afford the luxury to renew his car in 5 years time (remember more GHG intensive manufacturing of the new car than what he'd have saved during the life of his previous car)… IMHO, the prestige car manufacturers are smarter than us all by selling us more cars than we actually need.

No point trying to have an intelligent conversation with you!

  • We have similar but with lower drawer rather than door (SRF583DLS). Four years old now, the fan coil unit was replaced under warranty after two years, was a common problem with the model. Otherwise no problems, we'd buy again .. :-) .. !!
