Resale Value MacBook Pro Retina 13 Mid 2014?

What's the resale value for a macbook pro 13inch mid 2014 retiba, 256gb hard drive, i5 2.6ghz, 8gb ram?

I was thinking about $1300-1400 is reasonable? Have done under 100 cycles so it hasn't been used much.

    HI,

I'm seeing these go for average $960 used, so any more would be a bonus.
Does it have any Warranty left or is it eligible to extend via AppleCare…
I thought yours would be 256GB SSD as opposed to HDD.

    • Sorry I meant ssd.

      • Still within 2 year warranty period but no apple care

  • I sold my early 2015 256gb recently for $1200 if memory serves me correct. Mine had 200 cycles or so.

    • Sure, but that has a Intel Iris Graphics 6100 inside.

      • I meant it as a yardstick. I can't see it going for more than $1000

  • seems like under $1000 on ebay.

edit, actually Ebay says the price is Trending at AU $1,040.38 going by the last 90 days of sales.

  • Thanks for the responses.

Ok I would have thought the price would be higher considering people say Macs retain their value. It cost about $1800 back in 2015 so that would be quite a large drop.

    • A Windows laptop with the same specs/years would be roughly $500 now. They do retain their value.

      • That's true an XPS 13 would probably drop alot more.

I'd rather keep the macbook then sell it for sub $1k though. Works flawlessly and is like new, doubt I can find similar specs and build quality from a windows laptop for $1k.

Shame about macOS… I just can't seem to get used to it.

        Thanks all!

This is a myth. You bought at $1800, sell for $900. You can get an XPS 13 for around $1500 (on sale), sell for around $600. Sounds like the same cost of ownership to me.

I'd rather keep the macbook then sell it for sub $1k though. Works flawlessly and is like new, doubt I can find similar specs and build quality from a windows laptop for $1k.

Yes, second hand is always better value. You can never sell something second hand for $X and then expect to buy something better new for $X as well. Not really a valid comparison. That said, plenty of Windows machines around that price that would be competitive with your Macbook, e.g. Lenovo T460s (that's regularly on sale for $1k). You can also get a Dell XPS 13 previous generation (Skylake) for around $1200 or so when they have them on their outlet.

Shame about macOS… I just can't seem to get used to it.

          Install Windows?

        • @psterio:

I have but it's not the same. The track pad starts having a mind of its own and the battery life is horrible.

The windows experience is quite horrible on a mac.

        • @Circly: How long ago did you try? I remember when I tried it for the first time about 1.5 years ago, it was pretty bad, but I have Windows running on my Macbook Pro Retina Mid-2015 (i5, 8GB RAM) model and it works fine. You're right, the trackpad isn't as good, but it's not bad - tracking accuracy is fine, clicking is good and two-finger scroll works well. That said, I almost always use a mouse unless I'm not at a desk.

Battery life isn't as good as macOS, but not horrible. On macOS, I would have gotten around 7 hours or so, on Windows, I regularly get 4 - 5 hours just fine. That's enough for me, it lasts for longer than my concentration span anyway.

I use Windows for statistics/analytics software that are only available (or significantly better) on Windows, and it works really well for me. You should give it a try again some time soon. The updated drivers are much better.

  • Heck I sold my 2012 retina macbook pro for $1400 last month.

Bought it new for $2900 in 2012. Held its value pretty well.

    • Probably a 15in at those prices.

      • +1

Spot on. Was the 15" top of the line model at the time.

        • Got a mid-2012 15in pro retina off ebay in 2013 for $1250. Perfect condition. Thought it was a good deal at the time, but have since learned it was an amazing deal.

Any suggestions on a resale price if I were to sell it soon? Has had heavy use and the battery needs replacing. Noticing a few very mild performance issues, but not sure what is causing that. 256gb ssd.

        • @littletinyasianman:

Ah, mine had a 512gb SSD and a brand new battery. That must have added quite a bit to the price.

The battery and performance issues is probably going to kill the value of yours tbh.

But if you only paid $1250 for it, even $800 is still a great deal!

The issue you'll find is there has recently been a complete redesign which are lighter and have that touchbar thing which would have had a big impact on resale values of the older design.

But the redesign isn't necessarily better. Losing ports is a big thing to me…and I'm sure there are others that feel the same.

      • I definitely agree about the port thing. I'm curious exactly what about the macOS you are having difficulties with though? It seems very user friendly to me.

  • Thats very easy. Check what they are selling for on ebay - Search for that exact model but select COMPLETED LISTINGS in the options
