Just got back from Asia, good reception in general but they smashed me for one day in Macau. $11+ dollars per MB there and no uasabple service on the day. Lost $70 before I finally gave up - lucky I did not keep trying! They are currently refusing to give me any kind of refund. See how it pans out but BEWARE!

    • $11+ dollars per MB ? you can grab a 5 day pass sim card in HK/MACAU which include China, HK, Macau & Taiwan for around A$15 with 1.5GB data and other credits, also there are plenty Asia countries combination sim available to pick around that price range.

      • We started in China with a local SIM. I kept this one from woolies as backup. It was handy as we got ripped off at pudong airport, Shanghai where they sold us a SIM that was meant to have 5GB but gave us 500mb; was meant to work in multi-regions but didn't; was meant to be pre-paid but they used our passport and photo to sign us up for a contract - meaning they keep charging you after you leave and the company gives you a credit blacklist if you ever come back. All in all, buying in hk, Taiwan, Macau might be ok but rather than go through all that again (if starting in China) I'd likely just grab something like this and avoid the heartache for a few bucks myself.

Update: these guys gave me 2/3 back on Macau which I can live with.

        • Just return from HK, from my experience when you buy SIM in CHINA/HK/MACAU/TAIWAN you don't need to show them your passport, only in Japan Airport where there is a sim counter but other shopping mall you don't need your passport for the SIM unless tax refund. But well, at least you get something back.

  • what's the point really when you can always just buy a local sim when o/s?

It's handy if you're only going to be changing countries every few days or so. I found it especially handy in South America where activating a local SIM card might require you to call a Spanish-speaking hotline.

Plus if you're backpacking and trying to stick to a strict budget, the price of getting local sims can quickly add up, again, I found it handy when I desperately needed something translated or needed to look up information, but was also trying to stay off social media and just experience the moment. It served as a decent back up for 'just in case' moments.

        Agreed.
I've bought SIMs overseas and wasted precious time on a holiday when I could be sight seeing. I've also had problems with roaming SIMs I've organised in advance.
You have to weight it up for yourself. Every trip is different.
