  • A 4TB portable for not much more:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/298199

3.5" drives used to be double the capacity for the same price, but no longer. Not much point in buying them now.

    • Not much point in buying them now.

Not voiding the warranty when opening the external case?

    • +1

      This is better $/TB
      4TB portable - $41.155/TB
      3TB Desktop - $39.67/TB

Obviously different form factors as well, each with their own advantages and disadvantages

    • That's from USA though, for those that care..

    • +1

That deal is expired, now US$125.92 = $164.62

    • Not much point in buying them now.

      The 3.5" have their advantages.

For example, if you have a portable one connected via USB to your TV, it will always be on even with the TV on standby.

Whereas this one has a power button.

      • external hard drives of either size automatically sleep on idle.

        • Sure, they're supposed to "sleep", but the LED still blinks like mad.

My Seagate's LED almost never stops blinking with the TV on standby.

          Extremely annoying.

        • @Scab:
Something wrong there. Is it spinning down like it should?

        • @manic:

Yes, but the light still blinks randomly, I even used the Seagate software and set the sleep delay.

It does go to sleep properly when connected to my PC, however.

Something to do with my TV's USB power, as I can charge my phone via USB with the TV on standby.

The 4TB you pointed at has some truly horrid reviews. More than its fair share. The WD Elements desktop drives have been much more reliable for me than the Seagates I own. I'd get this 3TB over the one you linked in a heartbeat.

  • Shipping is
    Aus Post, Couriers ($11.45)
Aus Post, Couriers + Insurance Cover ($17.95)

If you pick the first, they apply code EASTERWD-1 automatically and shipping is free.
If you pick the second, the code is automatically unapplied and you cover the full shipping and insurance cost.

I don't like that at all. I can just see it getting lost or damaged and them saying "sorry, no insurance. You were given the option.". And $18 for insurance is steep!

  • Personal suggestion: Don't buy from Shopping Express

I bought this WD 3TB HDD and it only last for 2 weeks.

Shopping Express took near 2 weeks to replied and ask me to do the quick format and all will be good. Yes quick format is ok but normal format is not and it hang in 10%. Obviously that HDD is damaged.

When I asked for return to get refund, shopping express ask to return all in original package. Weill any one keep the box after opened? No, the box already recycled. When I asked for return with the box from Post Office, they don't respond at all.

That is a dodgy and irresponsible seller.
