Giant ebike $3199 (Was $3999) @ Giant South Yarra via Bike Exchange (VIC)

100

So first off this is not for everybody.
If you find it cheaper than this then great, link it. But if you find a cheap MTB Ebike then there is no shortage so don't compare them as they aren't comparable with at least service. I have seen this on sale for $3499 to $3799 over the last month but not $3199. That's low.

Next for those into their MTBs and don't agree with ebikes then that's fine too. But this has it's place and can be a good commuting bike too.

I have not called Giant South Yarra but all other professional bike companies won't allow their ebikes to be shipped. So I am literally flying to Brisbane soon to pick mine up. So this is for people in the Melb area. Unless they tell you they will ship.

If you lived in Melb and wanted a legal pedal assist bike then I would head in for a test ride.

Specs:

Giant SyncDrive Sport, 80Nm torque, 250W powered by Yamaha
-Giant PedalPlus 4-sensor technology
-Giant RideControl information display
-Giant EnergyPak 400WH Rechargeable Li-ion battery
-ALUXX SL-grade aluminium frame
-Shimano Deore 2x9 speed drivetrain with Shimano M315 hydraulic disc brakes

Battery full charge should be less than 15cents and would go over 30kms with pedal assist on high mode. On eco should expect 60km or more depending on hills and user weight.
Bike weight would be around 21kgs which is standard for ebike MTBs.
These are one of the few bikes in the Aus market that have the battery integrated so it looks like it is in the frame. Not as obvious that it's an ebike. The battery is removable and lockable with a key I believe.

You would need to call the shop to check your sizing. The website says they only have S,M,L frames in size. So if you are over about 190cms you will likely need the XL frame which they may not have in stock. So test ride for sizing first.

Ebiking is not new but is still growing. It has the fastest growth in cycling. Unfortunately I haven't really found many reviews and I have looked for a few weeks for this model.

This will give you some sort of build quality idea: (It is a better model that isn't stocked in Aus)

This is a Merida ebike video but will give you an idea of using it to commute in Melb

They also have the commuter version on special too.

So those who are keen on an ebike I would give them a test ride. Good warranty and support and legal requirements for Australia.

I have looked. If you look at ebikes you will see a few camps. 1. Ebikes are great. 2. Ebikes suck and people should use normal bikes only. 3. Why pay more when you can get an ebike on ebay for $1200 or a kit and bolt on.

I was just trying to avoid people linking to kits that don't have the integrated look. Might not happen here but I know it happens elsewhere.

        1. Ebikes suck and people should use normal bikes only.

I wonder how much of that is the fear of a electric assisted cyclist cruising past them more or less effortless and how that makes them appear :D

        • uh duh…theres a motor in there doing all the work.
how it makes them appear…? less fat than the guy on the ebike… :D

What about the group 4. I can get a decent motorbike for that price :-)

  • The so called reviews at the bottom of the page appear to be pretty fake, calling the product a garment etc.

    • The so called reviews… There is one review to a Giant ebike from an ebiking website. There is another random video to a motorbike blogger in Melb who happened to buy an ebike.
I really don't mind your views but I don't know where you are clicking. Those keen on this will go to Giant South Yarra and test ride one. Then they can take their money and go to Myer and buy the garment that the reviews state.

    • Most reviews on the internet are fake. If the site is able to be edited by any user then it's probably fake.

    • The reviews are for the store, not this specific bike :v

Not surprising a bike store would sell exercise wear ('garments') and forks

      • @Merlict got what I was talking about, though when you click thru it appears as if the item has 7 reviews and 4 stars not the store as is correct.

@Bargain Seeker your a happy snappy cat this morning aren't you? No idea why you feel a non positive comment is a personal attack on you but it isnt.

Any bargains for normal sized people?

    any deals for ants?

  • the irony is that its an expensive bike that comes with pedals…yet you dont need them :P

    • +4

Yes you do. With pedal assist eBikes you still need to pedal lightly for the motor to work. Stop pedalling and the motor also stops. There's also usually a cutout speed such as 25kph. Once you reach that speed you're all on your own and you must pedal to go any faster.

These bikes are great for where you want to still be able to 'cycle' on bicycle paths away from traffic unlike a road registered electric scooter.
For where you may have an injury or simply have some big hills along your journey that you wouldn't otherwise consider cycling up. For a daily commute you have the option to arrive at work without breaking a sweat. Alternatively you can "dial down" the motor assist and get a bit of a workout.

If eBikes help people move away from contesting roads with cars then that's a good thing. Also, a bit of light physical activity is better than none?

For those into salary sacrifice, there is a clause allowing you to salary sacrifice e-bikes, making them a lot more affordable.

3k on a bike is too much. Easy target for thief. Take less than a minute to break through the locks with boltcutters grinder

  • Shows as $3,199 for me

For those with an ebike that has a Bosch or Yamaha motor, this might come in handy too ;)

  • The price is over 3k, where is the discount? Do you have to call them up for the discount?

    • +1

Price is in Eneloop currency so you will need to convert it to AUD

250W should be enough to help you up a small incline.
