THESE DO NOT TAKE ENELOOPS :(

    • Are you sure? The old ones do, and I notice the tiny 800 mAh battery. AAA in series would give you 800mAh.

  • It's a generic coupon, all have the same number. My email

      Roger that, neil.

      Over and out.

  • Would anyone know if this would be any good on a cruise ship? I saw someone using a radio like this at our last cruise…but not sure if it would work in case one is at the top deck and other one in the cabin.

Edit: I saw this at the gearbest website, which looks fancier (and more expensive) but I can't justify the price since I only want it when cruising ~once a year http://m.gearbest.com/walkie-talkies/pp_615657.html?wid=21&u…

    • That is such a random problem to have (no mobile-to-mobile comms.) The ships don't have wifi so you can WhatsApp txt each other?

      • +2

First World Problems are very important sir.

      • Internet is unbelievably expensive and charged per device, so that's a no-no.

Unlikely to work with that much steel between you and the receiver. You're basically inside a giant Faraday cage.

      • Yeah…makes sense…thanks

    • Would anyone know if this would be any good on a cruise ship?

Yes, if you're doing a Splinter Cell mission.

      • Don't forget the throat mic.

  • Pick up unavailable $10 delivery charge

  • Good units. Note that Costco have these for around $100, not sure of the exact price. Slightly different SKU but the same units.

  • Might be worth checking out the BaoFeng UV-5R Walkie Talkie as well.

These consistently receive fantastic reviews and are around the same price as these

Well respected unit and a good option.
But has a steep learning and setup curve and may not technically be legal, so that may be an issue for some.

      • +2

        may not technically be legal

Not just technically, they're just plain not legal unless you have an amateur radio Foundation Licence. If you're caught using one without that licence then it can be rather expensive - https://www.typeapproved.com.au/fines-for-illegal-radios/

I got some of these Uniden radios from Dick Smith just before they closed down as replacements for the Baofeng radios I bought before I knew they weren't approved. The new ones work well, but I doubt the 10km range is achievable in most situations.

Seriously, don't (profanity) with the ACMA.

  • Range: 10+ km
    Power: 1 Watt

HAH! Maybe if you're transmitting from a geosynchronous satellite and have line-of-sight to the receiver.

    • +1

You have to throw it as you speak.

      • Maybe they mean if you set up 50 of them as relays.

        • Should I give you time to repeat that… radio jokes…

@Tuba: This comment thread is over over.

    • Did try with a 3W from JayCar in connection with 5W Boafeng, and reception went crap after about 800m. Sydney North Shore suburbia.

      • Watch out for those Boafeng, you'll get into a lot of trouble if they catch you using it.

        • I don't have it any more, it fell in the water while fishing.

  • +2

Its actually 1.5w going by Uniden specs. JB must be keeping the 1/2 watt. http://www.uniden.com.au/australia/p_uh515_2_index.asp

  • what's the audio quality like

    • +2

It's a UHF radio so it's meh at best. This isn't designed for blasting Daryl Braithwaite across the trailer park.

blasting Daryl Braithwaite across the trailer park

Or way up in the sky, little darlin'.

    Or this Oricom 2W?
    https://www.emgstore.com.au/magazines/australian-4wd-action/…
Know nothing about the seller, the deal arrived in my junk mail. We have a set of Oricom 1w for caravanning (backing in without screaming at each other and amusing all around) and they're great for that.
