Asus 3D Gaming Laptop G51JX-3D-IX012X ($1999 + $20 Delivery)

240
USEOZB3D-$50OFF

I really hate putting up Catchoftheday cos every man and his dog seems to, but this is a damn good price for this baby. $2400 is the best I've seen on staticice.

So if you're after a lower res, reasonably good GFX card and 3D gaming this is pretty cool.

EDIT: By popular demand, seems like a bit of a long post now though.

  • Are you supposed to price in title…

  • Both price and specs might help.

  • price in title matey, what do u think we are? some sort of alien click bots that know to click on the link to get the price.. GTFO

    • -2

u dont have to be so aggressive matey.

btw the laptop is nice if u r looking for a gaming laptop. espcially with the 2 years warranty and heaps of bonus… I'd buy one if I weren't looking for a gaming desktop :P

      • +5

He voted positive on the deal, he's mocking the many requests for prices, not the original poster…

  • I tried one of these laptops at a recent LAN party and was impressed by the 3D effect. It's very noticeable.

The only drawback I saw concerned interaction between the traditional fluorescent lighting in the venue and the 3D glasses. The lights were the traditional 50Hz ballast fluros (not modern CFLs), so observing anything outside of the LCD produced a horrible flickering effect of about 10 to 20 cycles per second. Something to keep in mind if you intend to use this 3D laptop (or any other similar model) at a venue with incompatible lighting.

The 1366X768 was the deal breaker for me. I have that on my current one and it's far too small these days, the one had before this had a 1280 X 800 screen and I miss the height.

    • Yep, that's why I have the G73JH. The 1080p was necessary for me, but some on the WP forums swear by the lower res so they don't have to squint.

The G73JH is the most awesome laptop ever made, but may be a little big for some.

      • +1

Because I'm interested but too lazy to read entire WP threads: why don't they have to squint?

        • Because the fonts are bigger. Some people find the font too small with 1080p. I don't, but I had an argument with some guy who thought 768 was better.

          • @casey2: I thought you could control the size of text using DPI settings, so regardless of what resolution you're viewing at, the font size would remain relatively the same.

          • @casey2: Thanks. I'm with you.

You can't have too much money, too much memory, too much processing power…or too much resolution!

Edit: And scrimshaw is right, font size is adjustable.

    • +1

The 1366 x 768 screen seems like underkill on an otherwise useful spec.

      • +1

That resolution is more suited for that graphics card if you want to play with high settings. The 360M won't be able to play games with high settings smoothly at 1920x1080.

I have a G51 which has a GTX 260M and 1366x768 res screen but from comparisons, I've found that performance is about on par with the HD5870 (found in G73JH) and 1920x1080 res screen on the same settings. The fact is that resolution makes a difference.

Though I do agree that with all that tech, a 1920x1080 screen would probably be the better option especially since it has a blu ray drive.

        • I don't think the human eye could perceive the difference between the two native resolutions on a screen that size beyond cross-eye squashed-nose distance anyway, if at all! ;)

Same goes for 1080p vs 720p movies…gotta be a real big screen, real close to actually see a difference! Just google it, plenty of resources out there on human perception & cognition! Interestig topic! :)

    • agreed…. crap res…. anything smaller than 1600h (preferably 1920h) is a no go for me… but I guess old people with rubbish eyesite might like this…

  • I like most of the COTD deals, but they are super slow in delivery. I bought the Toshiba LED Digital media frame, and after payment was received, they took 7 days to dispatch the item. I am still to receive it :(
I am wandering, what will happen to the pearl set, its been . It will also take more than 10 days to reach.

From ebay, I have been getting things from China or Hong kong and it took 7-9 days to reach my place.

COTD excuse was due to too much rush, it is delayed. I dont know, for how long, they can give this excuse and do not improve their service, as most of the times their deals are inviting and rush will always be there.

    • -1

CoTD has fantastic shipping, maybe you've just had some bad luck.

Normally their products will turn up on my doorstep within 1 or 2 days of cleared payment which is blazingly fast.

  • +5

So all that extra stuff probably adds up to $500

Which means this Core i7 beast with 8 gigs of RAM, GTX 360, BluRay and 120hz 3d screen is $1500.

Not bad… would buy this if I could find 2 grand in my couch somewhere.

  • +2

This looks like an awesome laptop.
The bundle is awesome, only thing lacking is a 1680x1024 screen.
    Otherwise a great deal!

Where's QQQ to give us a nice little bonus, how about 10% off for OzBargain hunters :)

edit, ok, 10% may be excessive, but I just looked at the bank account and 5% will probably sway me

Oh man, do I have to put in the title now? :P

Oh, and seeing as you're on here, do you want to change the name of it?

        G51X-3D-IX012X should have a "J" in there.

        • +1

edit your post, put the code into the coupon box as well.

      • +2

QQQ is here to save OzB with further $50 off! thanks :)

  • The G53 is just around the corner, potentially maybe 2-4 weeks away. It's going to be noticeably quicker and with much better specs.

Having said that, if you're desperate, then the G51 might suit you.

  • Nice, though i see basically the same thing with the 1080p lcd for 2400, i'd probs take the extra res.

  • +1

Correct me if i'm wrong but this website sell this model for $1897.00 AUD http://www.mailordersoftware.com.au/loadShopSingleProduct.do…
And the funny thing is i pulled this one out from the comparing price list that COTD put in there website :P, don't know how much is the shipping cost, also the ram in the title is 2GB but in the spec it is mentioned 2GB*4

    • $25 for Victoria; $45 outside Victoria. $1942 delivered if you are outside vic - it includes the 3D glasses but doesn't mention any other accessories.. I think the cotd deal is still better.

  • Has anyone who ordered this from COTD received it yet, or even had it marked as Dispatched? I am still waiting, I sent them an email on Thursday and they replied stating there'd been a delay with the supplier and it would be shipped in a couple of working days.

    • Mine was marked as dispatched after 5 this evening… So could be another 9 business days thru Australia Post :(

  • Yeah mine got marked as Dispatched this afternoon too, really hoping it arrives by the weekend

  • +1

I received this package in the morning and did not receive the headset and the Bioshock 2 game that was originally advertised. Has anyone else had this same problem? BTW I have already emailed COTD and got a reply saying that they will mail the game to me and they are chasing up Asus for the headset…

    Any comments would be appreciated

    • +1

Same with me - got mine this arvo, no headset or bioshock.

  • +1

Same, missing the headset and game. No response to my query yet, although I only made it at about 8pm last night. Assuming their response will be the same as yours

  • +1

no bioshock or headset - email sent to cotd on 4th sept. still awaiting response. good luck to everyone they better come through with everything as promised. :p

  • +1

Same as above. I am starting to think that no one got them. I've emailed a second time now (no one replied the first time). Just then I emailed every department in hopes of a reply this time. Don't give up people. Keep this group updated if they reply to you :)

  • +1

I got the below today regarding the missing components:

"We have been in contact with Asus and are awaiting their response on how to proceed. As these are generally pre-packed, Asus do not have the headsets readily available. Nevertheless you can rest assured that this will be sorted along with the Bioshock 2 - 3D edition game. We however ask for your patience and understanding while we work with Asus to resolve this for you."

    • Just got the same email verbatim. I haven't had a problem with catchoftheday before so I'm expecting they'll come good with the promise :)

  • Discovered that the wireless-N is only N-150 and not 300… pretty poor for such a high-end laptop :(

  • Anyone heard or recieved anything? I'm considering emailing again?

Hi all, decided to register to give you all some info, i too have purchased this product and never received the headset or bioshock 2, We have ALL received the wrong mouse that was advertised as well we SHOULD have received the copperhead, instead they have sent us the Abyssus, now i feel very wronged and have given them an ultimatum as they have breached the trade act, now in my quest to get justice i have found the customer service managers phone number and name, Name is Pooven thier customer service landline is 02 9764 7740, i have basically given them a legal declaration stating that if this problem isnt solved by friday then i will be issuing a complaint to the ACCC, and lodging a form with the local office of fair trading whos number is 1300 558 181. I have already outlined the laws they have breached so Pooven is aware of them here is a link in case any of you also want to follow my course of action (the more people who do it the quicker we will get a response) http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/815335 , clearly states that if a Supplier advertises a product, they are legally obliged to provide product advertised. COTD's excuse is ASUS gave them the wrong info, that is NOT our problem, we are legally entitled to the goods as advertised.

    • Seppia, Could you please reconfirm the phone number you posted for Pooven. I tried calling it, and it went to AWI. Thanks.

  • sorry just to clarify, Pooven has said they are working on the headset and software, but has said there is nothing they can do about the mouse, as an MMO gamer and graphic editor the 7button mouse was a huge factor in deciding to buy this laptop, so the abyssus, two button mouse just wont cut it for me, and i feel i have been ripped off on this

  • +1

    Hi Seppia,

    Thanks for the info.
This is really getting a bit ridiculous now, it has almost been a month since they were sold and we're still yet to get any solid information on how our orders are being corrected.
I notice the page is no longer accessible at:
    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/past_product.php?past_produc…

Did anyone print it to pdf?

  • +1

Hi all, good news, after much debating and threats of legal action, i have received an email from Pooven stating that Asus has agreed to not only provide us with the headphones and software but to also replace the mouse. Please let anyone else you may know of to give them a call and report the missing/wrong items.

Also if you have received an email stating otherwise let me know and i will link you the statement that i made which outlines specifically which laws were in breach, so hopefully everyone can get this sorted out, and i agree matt, 4weeks to sort out a simple problem is a bit ridiculous.

Well good luck to everyone in getting what you're entitled to as well

    • This is just a quick update on the missing items before the weekend. We are pleased to inform you that Asus has managed to source the headsets. We are just waiting on the delivery before being able to resolve this for you.

Rest assured that the missing items (headset + bioshock 2 game) will be with you very soon.

We will also follow up with another email when the missing items have been dispatched.

Your patience and understanding on this matter is much appreciated.
      Kind Regards,

      Pooven

      No mention of mouse?

      • Also the email only came through at 4:57pm today so I';; have to call tomorrow I guess :(

      • mouse was in the box that came with the laptop minimonti ;-)

    hi all,
received email from pooven (COTD) today regarding the missing headset and game. It reads as follows:-
    Hi there,

We have just received the delivery for the SteelSeries Siberia v2 Full-size Headset. It appears the USB version wasn't available for the quantities we require and had to be imported which would take over 3 months. Therefore the regular V2 Headset (white) was supplied. This model doesn't include the additional sound card or USB connectivity. Nevertheless you can be assured that you are receiving the same quality headset, where every element of the v2 has been optimized for pro gaming, making the headset a preferred piece of equipment for the worlds' best competitive PC gamers - the most demanding headset users in the world.

This has been a very messy transaction, and we would like to bring this to a closure just as much as you would. As a goodwill gesture for the delay and not being able to send out the correct set of headsets, we are happy to offer you 2x Village Cinema Gold Class vouchers (off-peak). Each Voucher (valued at $30.00), valid Monday to Wednesday, entitles one adult to attend a movie session at any Village Cinemas, Birch Carroll & Coyle, or Event Cinemas- expires 30 SEP 2011. Please accept this along with our embarrassed apologies for the error.

To summarize, we will be sending the following:
    1) Bio Shock 2 game
    2) SteelSeries Siberia v2 Full-size Headset (White)
    3) 2 x Village Cinema Gold Class vouchers (off-peak)

The above items will be dispatched over the next couple of days.
Please feel free to email us should you have any further queries.

    Kind Regards,

    Pooven

The lowest price I could find on eBay for the 7.1 sound card portion was about $60 delivered, so the gold class tickets might be an acceptable substitute if you happen to live somewhere that has it. Not suitable for anyone in SA as far as I can tell…

    • Even in NSW there are only 2 and they are in the middle of nowhere. The only cinema chain in NSW is Events (previously greater union). I think they should just give us the $60 dollars. As a student my ticket is only $10 so this is not an acceptable substitute.

  • I received the same email as above however I was told they would also be sending me out the correct mouse - and this is included in the list of items they are sending.

It seems only those who have mentioned the fact the mouse that was issued was incorrect are getting it rectified - which I think it pretty poor on COTDs behalf.

I live in Sydney - the only Village Gold Glass in NSW is Aubury which is pretty much closer to Melbourne then Sydney. This is certainly not a suitable replacement for a lesser Headset.

    The headset we purchased:
    http://steelseries.com/products/audio/steelseries-siberia-v2…
Official Site has it for €99.99
    What we are being sent:
    http://steelseries.com/products/audio/steelseries-siberia-v2
Official Site has it for €79.99

    • I misread… It is valid for EVENT:

"Valid at all Village Cinemas, Greater Union, Birch Carroll & Coyle and Event Cinema locations throughout Australia"

  • Seems they aren't asking for the (incorrect) Razer mouse to be sent back either

  • Guys,

I have just come back from holidays and found my machine dleivered to me.

I have had the same issues as you guys.. But there was also one other thing I noticed. The machine is supposed to have nVidia 360M with 1GB DDR5 RAM. However mine has DDR3 RAM.

Can you guys also confirm the same?

    Thanks

  • +1

Mine definitely has 1Gb of GDDR5, according to the nVidia control panel

  • hi Minotaur, Where in the nVidia control panel did you see this? I have a tag on the top of my laptop that states its a DDR3 graphics.

  • Click the System Information link in the bottom left corner of the nVidia panel

  • I did do that already.. but sorry I'm bit computer illiterate here.. What exactly am I looking for to determine the difference of having DDR3 RAM and DDR5 RAM. It doesn't really state it anywhere.

  • Seppia, Could you please reconfirm the phone number you posted for Pooven. I tried calling it, and it went to AWI. Thanks.

  • Next to the Dedicated Graphics memory line in system info it will state the amount of video memory, and what type it is

    • +1

Mine did not display this. Installed gpu-z and confirmed it is ddr5 ram. Asus have placed an old tag on the machine. Thanks for your help.

  • YAY I recieved everything yesterday with all the items as per the original listing :D

  • Ya I got all of it too… I don't really like the Copperhead mouse though, bit too small for my hand.
Might chuck it up on eBay, as well as the other Razer mouse they sent out the first time :)

    • Was looking at this last night, I'm considering getting one.
Saitek Cyborg R.A.T. 7 Gaming Mouse
      http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

      • Nice looking mouse, I have a Saitek Cyborg v7 keyboard on my desktop PC, have been debating whether to get one of these mice for a while to match it. Currently using a Logitech G5 (Battlefield 2142 Edition)

  • BTW you can get a 7800mAh battery that fits the G51Jx for under $60 on eBay at the moment, the battery is a bit bigger than normal (it pokes out the back of the laptop about 15mm) but boosts capacity by over 50%
