      Maybe

      @ Target. Starts Thursday

  • Probably a stupid question but, somebody able to verify this handset is unlocked?

Edit: I answered my own question. As stated in title on Target web site. Perhaps adding this piece of info upstairs would be advantageous.

  • Its J5 not J5 Prime.

  • +1

    Exynos 7570

It is an interesting SoC which is paired with Mali-T720. It should be better than Helio P10, but I want to see how it fares against SD 617.

    • Is it better than the Exynos 7240 from S6?

If so, this is a good price.

      It's wasted on a 720p screen though.

But still, I wouldn't mind a spare 720p phone for watching 720p content without scaling. I have a lot of anime that looks better in 720p than 1080p due to native resolution being 720p.

      • The 7420 is still better since it has a72 cores. The 7570 only has a53 cores.

      • 720p should also scale perfectly into the 2560x1440 common on Android flagships now.

        • I'd still rather see it at native res.

    • +1

On paper this looks better than a sd617. Built on 14nm process vs 28nm. Won't perform better, but should get better battery life.

      • +1

I think this is the first local cheapish phone with a smaller process node than 28nm - and it's two nodes smaller, at 14nm. A welcome revolution. Energy efficiency seems to improve at about 30% per node, making this around .7*.7 = 50%. Double the battery life.

But I couldn't find how many cores its mali-T720 has. MP4 is fine for 720p, but has been available in cheaper ozbargains (e.g. huawei y6 elite at $9).

        • +1

Yeah Y6 has been the best bang for buck phone. Nothing comparable to that phone price wise, even if you have to pay for unlocking. Hopefully the next generation cheaper phones start getting 2gb of ram, SoC built on 14nm process and oled screens.

  • What's the difference between Galaxy S7 or S8 and this J5? Is it mainly slower processor etc?

    • +14

This is an entry level phone, its inferior in every category you can imagine:)

      • +1

I can imagine a category called "crapiness".

        • +1

          And "hipster factor"

    • +5

      quite a lot.
smaller screen, slower processor, bigger bezel, camera is lesser quality, non expandable, lower quality screen, less ram, less mAh battery etc. entirely different ball park

      • +1

It's a 5" screen so it's not a whole lot smaller. Resolution is 1/4 though.

I think what hurts it the most is the 16GB storage. That doesn't leave much for apps.

      • Storage is expandable actually.

    • +1

Why not read the specs for each of them?

  • +2

Redmi 4x is way more better than this

    • +1

Not really. Xiaomi has recently dropped their balls. (eg. SD 652 for Redmi Note 3, but SD 625 for Redmi Note 4)

      • +8

So they are finally growing up? :D

      • +1

The 652 would be Note 3 Pro/Prime. Is there a Pro/Prime version of Note 4 or Note 5?

      • -8

the note 4 has 100x better specs than this for $50 less, don't even try defending this shit brick against xiaomi who controls the budget smartphone market

      • +1

I'd rather the s625 over the s650 myself. Not a huge drop in performance, but nice gain in battery life.

  • +8

Without Samsung name on it, it;s a $99 phone

    • When a ZTE phone with similar specs is sold for nearly $200 in Australia, I reckon this is the normal price for this type of phone. Hell, people are even willingly to buy Xperia XA for $200 and that phone has Helio P10.

    • Can you recommend a similarly spec'ed unlocked local phone with 2 years warranty close to $99? Thanks

      • -2

This is currently less than $135 to your door.

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Blackview-R6-3G-32G-4G-smart…

If you wait a bit you can grab it on special, as soon as next week for Easter, seen it for low $100's or google the net now for lower, Aliexpress is chockers with phones, tweak the search to find what features you are after

The R6 has dual SIMS, larger 5.5" 1080 screen, 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, larger battery, etc etc Its easily a step above that Samsung, for near 1/2 less.

Samsung and apple are ripping us

        Cheers

        • +1

Also has a MTK SoC,IPS as opposed to AMOLED screen, less optimised android implementation, worse build, worse camera implementation(sensor, lens, software) and perhaps questionable quality. There are lots of little things that go into a phone apart from 5 numbers and a list of features.

If I were to spent more than $50 on a Chinese phone with essentially no warranty I'd at least get a well established Chinese brand (Xiaomi,LeEco,Meizu..etc) that can pump out OTAs and provide some reassurance of quality control.

        • +1

Not even a local stock, FAIL.

        • @motor89:

You can buy it local stock, but pay more x 2, "aussie tax" and GST, we are here to save $$$

He asked for a recommendation, i offered it

        • @Talsek:

Of course the phone has warranty, different sellers haave different offers

Its silly to compare a currently $135 phone to a $249 one

Be that as it may, even the Antutu testing the R6 has the J5 beat, its performance is sound, as is its real world reviews, Blackview are just like every other phone company, buy in all the bits/pieces from suppliers, they designed the frame :-)

You really need to compare a Chinese $249 with the this Samsung that's also priced $249 to play fair.

        • -5

a (profanity) xiaomi redmi note 4x global $215 on aliexpress, 1080p which looks fantastic on a 5.5" screen, a MASSIVE battery 4100mh which is nearly double this $250 shitbrick, you're paying for a brand who's completely ripped you off in specs, xiaomi has 3gb rom 32gb ram, expandable up to 128gb with 2 sim slots, a really nice camera with a bunch of filters (pano). Bezels aren't very large, really nice looking phone definitely not plastic, rather metal. Definitely one of the best budget phones out there.

        • +2

@8200: > He asked for a recommendation, i offered it

Incorrect, you claimed it was a "$99 phone" and so he asked you to recommend one because naturally with the claim you made why wouldn't you.

You then failed to recommend a phone that cost $99 and instead recommended a device from a generic Chinese supplier with a different, inferior SoC that costs $135.

        • @hakkenaidos: Poor reasoning. This price is for local stock with local 2 year warranties that people can always take back to any Target Store.. whilst Aliexpress has to send back to China and then gamble if they will even warrant it. Not everything is purely about specs and some people buy brands (Samsung, Apple, Mercedes, BMW etc) due to trust. Some people in this instance will prefer a smaller screen too to fit into pockets easier. Hence why the market has diversity to cover everyone's needs.

        • -1

          @8200:

I mean, you DID just compare them. "The R6 has dual SIMS, larger 5.5" 1080 screen, 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, larger battery, etc etc Its easily a step above that Samsung, for near 1/2 less."

I'm just pointing out some flaws in that comparison. Not every company takes generic devices slapped together on some Shenzhen shopping strip and puts their name on it. The in-house design/software work makes a big difference. Lots of Aliexpress sellers dont have a warranty policy outside of the Aliexpress dispute system and even then many are shoddy at best. Even the best of them (think Goldway..etc) only do a year of "free" warranty and get complaints of returning refurb devices to people who send phones in for repair.

By no means do I mean to steer clear of Chinese phones altogether,I'm typing this on a MI5s right now, but I'd be hesitant to buy from a lesser known brand for anything I intend to use daily.

        • +1

@bchliu: In what way is it poor reasoning? That's the best possible reasoning, you're paying $50 extra for a worse phone? Maybe about 1/1000 orders gets stuffed up but either way aliexpress will step in, everything is about specs? What's the point of paying loads of cash for a crap phone? This is ozbargain, where you look for value not where you look for expensive overpriced branded crap.

        • @hakkenaidos: Look up the meaning of "Value" and you'll find it is subjective and will be different to everyone depending on how they see things. Not everyone just wants to go specifications - that may be your requirement, but definitely not every one else's. This was why I said "poor reasoning" - because you cannot say that 99.999% of the population will think like you that Xiaomi, who is not heard of by 90% of the Australian population as being a reputable brand (even though they are).
According to your logic, then you should go and downvote every Apple deal out there - just because you can get a cheaper and better Xiaomi for a fraction of the cost. Should also downvote every Mercedes and BMW because Hyundai does it better for a fraction of the price?

        • @bchliu:

If you are happy to compromise in some areas, then sure Chinese phone can be a better deal for certain people. However I know the better spec Chinese phones aren't better in every way.

The usual downsides to a Chinese model phone
          -band support
          -warranty
          -os support
          -camera quality

Some people just want a phone that works out of the box, supports local networks, easy to claim warranty and seek support if have issues. Unfortunately Chinese imports don't offer this.

        • @Ronnnie: LOL.. you should address those points to hakkenaidos.. I'm trying to tell em that not everyone wants specs and some just wants a recognisable label with a working phone and local warranty.

        • +1

Some people can't be helped.. buying a low-end phone with "good label" only to find grief later when the phone "wouldn't work".
Worse still when their brick-and-useless local store and "recognisable label" vendor handball them around.

        • @Ronnnie: Band support please… it's not as important as people make it out to be, my xiaomi doesn't have band 28 and there hasn't been a time where I haven't gotten 4G, warranty same as any other, people with local branded phones still have trouble with claiming warranty, os support? MIUI has the best OS support there is, and I'll beat you $100000 the xiaomi redmi note 4 has a better camera than this J5. I used my xiaomi redmi note 4 out of the box? I don't know what you're talking about, you can get global versions too?

        • @hakkenaidos:

          1. I have a xiaomi and band support is a minus
          2. Warranty a minus too, don't try misleading people. You factor it in the savings.
          3. Os ships as vendor ROMs or Chinese ROM, this requires user effort to change. Most people don't want to tinker
          4. Redmi phones camera are terrible, worse than my $69 Lumia. They take ok pics in good light outside, terrible anywhere else. I can't see the Samsung being worse, but if it is then it is terrible too.
        • @Ronnnie:

          1. No it isn't you're an idiot, where do you live? the tiwi islands? Networks have more than 1 band running 4G, I have a redmi 4 myself so you're wrong
          2. Not really, find a reliable store, not that hard.
          3. No I got Xiaomi Global ROM, shipped factory sealed. Do your research, from Xiaomi store.
          4. No they aren't you're thinking of redmi note 2 or some terrible rubbish. I don't believe this bottom of the line samsung can take brilliant low light photos?
    • Yet to see an unlocked $99 phone sold locally (2 years warranty) with super amoled screen, 2gb of ram, using SoC built on 14nm process, and 13mp camera. Can you point where you find such a phone deal?

  • What would you prefer, this deal or the $167 Sony Xperia XA?

    • +1

The xa if it's a price difference of $80. There isn't much between these two phones and certainly not a 50% price difference

    • Exynos is much better than MTK. If you can afford the extra $80, I'd get this over the XA.

      • +1

Eh, I don't know about actual usage but the xa benchmarks seem to be better than the j5 prime. At least nothing seems to suggest that the J5 prime is a significantly superior phone in terms of processing power.

        • +1

The mtk chip uses same a53 cores clocked higher. However the exynos chip is built on newer process. In theory the mtk chip will offer higher performance but use more power. Battery life should be better on the Samsung phone with slightly worse performance.

  • +5

rather get myself a Redmi NOTE 4x deal and just use it on Optus with LTE bands B3/B5/B7

or find myself an old Redmi Band 28 deal that comes around now and then for $200/$239

    • +7

you can also get Motorola G4 / Moto G4 Plus

It has all the bands you want, and runs Nougat as of last few months. Weaker processor than Note 4x but it's available locally..

    • Do you reckon SD625 is powerful enough to ditch the local warranty? Keep in mind, MIUI is much heavier UI.

      • -4

Nothing is worth ditching for a local warranty.

  • +7

    Very poor specs for $249.

  • +1

I wonder if Target ever sold one for $399. Doubt it.

  • No NFC means no Android pay and no Samsung pay

  • 8.1mm thick… no thanks.

    • +2

      That's what she said.

  • +5

The specs are so normal, the price isn't amazingly good. Where does the positive vote come from?

    • +1

      Yeah, I'm baffled too.
What's more, the Samsung website advertises how this thing can play back at 1080p. That's deceiving at best unless you are using an external screen, because this thing isn't even full-HD. It's equivalent in performance to a 4-year-old flagship.

    • -1

Are there any local alternatives around this price point with Super AMOLED screen and using a SoC based on newest process?

Moto g4 play is possibly a better alternative for similar price, but then it loses out on screen and SoC is only a s410.

Specs are misleading sometimes too. I have a redmi phone that has a 13mp camera, but it performance is worse than the older cheaper Lumia 640 with it 8mp shooter.

      • -1

        its 720p…………………… you've probs got like a redmi 2

        • So are other phones at this price point. I'd like someone to post deals for comparable alternatives

        • @Ronnnie: Xiaomi's aren't 720p??? all 1080p, moto G4's are all 1080p? you're just getting ripped off by samsung

        • @hakkenaidos:

The similar Moto G4 play is 720p and uses an older inferior SoC. Also doesn't use a super amoled screen. The other moto G4 typically retail 300+

          http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g4_play-8104.php

It depends on how much you value the newer more efficient SoC and super amoled screen. These are features no other local phone (or good Chinese import) offers at this price point, xiaomi hasn't released a phone locally yet?

Do you know of similar alternatives with a super amoled screen at this price and local stock with 2 years warranty and good band support?

        • @Ronnnie:

No one gives a (profanity) about an amoled screen, it's 720p for christ's sake. An no wrong officeworks & harvey norman were selling G4 Plus' for $270 so once again your wrong. Stop falling for this branded shit.

  • A few questions:

    • Is this better than my existing Galaxy S4? I'm assuming it is.
    • Will this work well on the Telstra 4GX network (700Mhz bands and does it have blue tick)?
    • Any chance this has waterproofing?

    Thanks.

    • I doubt you'd see much of a difference compared to your S4. If you did a factory reset on your S4 it would be about the same in improvement.

    • Performance is probably a downgrade, even over a 4 year old phone. The only advantages it would have over something like the s4 is battery life should be a bit better and it's on a newer android version. The screen, and main camera could be a little better too.

    • Have a look at the specs page OP has kindly linked to in the description.

  • +4

I've got one of these. You should not get one of these.

    • +2

I am over Samsung too, going Chinese brand, vastly better bang-4-buck

  • Shame it's difficult to find the Oppo F1 these days. The 3GB of RAM makes all the difference.
