Optus $20 Entertainer 24mth Plan - 2GB Data, Galaxy Tab A8, w/Video & Music Streaming Quota Free

1480

Sure its not the worlds greatest tablet or plan with only 2gb of data but for 20 bucks it includes the tablet and a plan from optus that has quota free video and music streaming.

Perfect for trips away and a cheap way to access these services data free without chewing up quota on my mobile.

If you hotspot the tablet to your laptop then connect your laptop to tv can you watch Netflix etc on your tv. I have a Chromecast but learnt from experience the Chromecast uses your data allowance to watch netflux on your tv.

      • This sounds like the only way to do it while also remaining quota free. Will have to give it a go at some stage

  • Sorry for the basic question, but can this tablet connect to wifi?

    • +1

      Yes

    • Connectivity 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4G + 5GHz)
      WiFi Hotspot Yes

As mentioned above in yow's spec details

      • Yeah thanks mate
It is just that I got conflicting advice in 2 different chats with Optus sales online

  • You can always just spend $35 a month and get 10GB of data/month plus the video/music streaming option is included. May be a better option for some of the folks here considering the deal. Total cost over the 24 months is $840.

    • Why would you want 10gb when there is already unmetered streaming?
If you were to use it for HD then as soon as you use that up you gotta switch back to SD anyway

    • do you have the link for this?

  • Would you still get $20 broadband discount with hone phone plan?

    • I'd like to know that too. Looking to change to Optus for NBN and Fetch TV, dropping Iinet and foxtel.

Would essentially be free if this happens.

  • Is insurance really worth it?
I have never needed any of those things it offers in all these years I have had my mobile phone, so I'm guessing not for me….

It says replacement is $200 but isn't this tablet around that anyway?

  • Min. Total Cost is $480 over 24 months excluding any discounts.

Is the 10% student discount available? Online chat confirmed no student discount. Anyone has any success?

    • +1

Apparently thats over, confirmed with in store member when I went yesterday.

  • Are there any other (better) tablets available?

    • Yes?

  • $259 refurbished http://www.azod.com.au/samsung-galaxy-tab-a-8.0-16gb-lte-bla…
I'd probably still go with the Optus plan though. Safer with the warranty.

  • So I assume you'd just put the SIM into a pocket wifi device and then use that network for all your media steaming?
Looks like a great deal for those who have a crap home ADSL

  • Anyone know the SoC, CPU and GPU on this?

None of Optus, Samsung nor gsmarena seem to list it… just "Quad-core 1.2 GHz".

    EDIT http://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/72d43460 says

    Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 28 nm

    ARM Cortex-A53 64 bits ARMv8
    Level 0 cache memory (L0) 4 KB + 4 KB
    Level 1 cache memory (L1) 16 KB + 16 KB

    Qualcomm Adreno 306 400 MHz

    • Good to know this, I've got Xiaomi Redmi 2 has same CPU and RAM. it still goes very strong at moment.

      • But the GPU has only 21.6 GFLOPS, half of the huawei y6 elite (same 1240x720 resolution).

GFLOPS isn't everything for graphics, but probably the best single number.

Got one yesterday. Didn't check specs deeply but already enjoying google play music and maps on road. Netflix also looks great on tablet. Well worth for the 20$/month.

It came with 6.0.1 aug 2015 security patch. It got 450mb update when I switch on, same 6.0.1 with dec 2016 security patch.

Performance looks good though I installed package disabler pro and disabled google hangout, g+, many more. Just have abc aps, Netflix and gp music (youtube also I disabled).

correct, i use this on all samsung phones. Best investment of 5$.

Wondering if the unlimited stream includes download to tablet for Netflix?

    • as per the faq, yes

    • Just be warned there is a limit to how much you can download for offline viewing. Roughly about 2 to 2 and a half seasons of shows before you have to delete some. You can change storage to sd to increase this apparently as it will store episodes on both.

  • Chromecast needs wifi, so this is not suitable for data free streaming (setting hotspot on tablet may be risky). No mhl cable support on this basic tablet. So this is mainly for travel /music.

Shop person said, sim is tied to the tablet for the free streaming.

    • Can you mirror the screen to get around this? Using Chromecast or a cheap mirroring dongle like Ezcast for example.

      • +1

No. To mirror we need wifi.

        • +2

Haven't tested yet but mirrorshare go claims to do screen sharing to a pc through usb debugging mode. Will test and report back.

Not a perfect workaround by any means if it works.

        • @dazza826:

Don't even bother with this. Vysor works but drm protected content will blank the Windows app window screen when connected via usb no way to get around it.

        • +1

@dazza826: only other way I could think of doing it outside of Chromecast is via a device that supports miracast as this does have screen sharing. Its worked on my LG with the nrl app. Had a quick look on xda looks like it works. Just don't have a Miracast device to test

  • Next day express delivery is a con. Still waiting

  • A bit late to ask this, but:

What is this older Galaxy Tab A8 like for real estate websites? (My bargain 1GB RAM phones struggle a bit with heavy websites of retailers like coles, woolworths, kmart, target, big w etc. I hope the 2GB RAM makes a difference…)

It's for an elder family member, with imperfect eyesight. So, I'm not sure if 8" display is big or clear enough. What do you think?

This would be their first web-browsing device, so I'm hoping it's relatively fast and easy to use. Especially with that 2 year contract if it's not…

    • +2

I tested it on Coles and woolies shopping sites for you.
Both landscape and portrait mode the pages takes a bit to load, around 5-10 seconds.
But once it has loaded there is zero lag browsing through the products.
The tablet isn't that big but I quite like it, just got it yesterday and so far so good.
Its very clear but I think if their eye site isn't the best then maybe get a bigger one?
Unless you or someone can trouble shoot at a moments notice maybe it would be better to get an iPad?
I hate to recommend it but I would rather my mum use an iPad instead of a Samsung haha. I feel like somehow my mum would manage to mess it up!

      • Thanks very much! 5-10s loading, then fine seems reasonable.

Totally agree on iPad but so expensive, and they like this deal. Plus, I can trouble-shoot - and clear the homescreen of everything but what they need, and show them how to get back there.

Also agreed on larger size - the only way is for them to try it, I'll get them to an Optus store to try one (or Telstra - someone mentioned similar deal there, sans $4/m streaming).

  • So, in the end..Is there no way at all you can keep in the restrictions and export the video (even standard Def)?

  • +1

Looks like a good deal, has anyone try put this sim into iPad an stream netflix on it dose it counts towards data or free streaming

  • heh comparing it with my Asus Google Nexus 2012
    800x1280 screen

3 years later and barely any improvements

    http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=7121&idPhone2=…

I'm curious about it for tv/movie watching… and some game play

    • Yup. Using my 2012 Nexus and the screen res is much better than a 2015 Sammy tab. SMH.

FYI Spotify ads seem to count against your data allowance

  • Does Optus allow plan changes?

  • Any idea when the deal finishes?

  • +2

Hi all, not sure when this ends but I just ordered it. I went in shop and they do not have the same offer. I want it mostly for the free unlimited music and netflix streaming when we are out and about. Don't really need the tablet, but hey it is chucked in for free. I will use sim in my note 2014 tablet and report back if the data does not come out of the 2gb (the unlimited part).

    • Have you received it yet? Does it charge you for the usage in other devices?

  • +2

So anyone tried using the sim on other device?

    • +1

I'd like to know this as well, I really just wanna get it for the free google play streaming for cheap and sell the tablet… Would make it like a $10/month data plan

      • +2

Only got last night , I still havent had a chance. The download speed is decent, I downloaded a high quality netflix (200mb) and (100mb) i about 3 minutes on the train. Have streamed an episode of Homeland too no problem. When I have a time I will test and report back.

      • +3

Good news I tried in note 2014 and download about 500mb between netflix and play music to try. The counter is still saying I used 1% of my 2gb and saying I used some data for netflix this morning. I haven't been charged anywhere else so it is fairly safe to say that it is working on a different tablet.
I was thinking that because the Samsung A is an unbranded tablet, nowhere it says it's Optus and I had to manually download apps. What a bargain, I will probably sell mine as note 2014 is a much better tablet and can be connected to tv if we go away.
If you manage to make $240 then only $10 for 2gb and unlimited streaming on allowed apps

Hi guys, I tried in different tablet but I am not sure as yet where it came from because it takes a few days before updating.
I also noticed that it has unlimited sms. Unfortunately i don't really need them, but it might be good to know if you were thinking of a plan for a teenager. Sure it's not a phone so you can't make calls, however nowadays kids mostly text or chat.

    • I don't think sms are included as even though account says I have unlimited sms when I try to send it says I have no credit to send sms. So that you are aware of this guys. I am now using sim in Note 2014

  • +3

First impression is that this is a good mid range tablet. If you are not fussed about screen quality and need the data go for it. I tested on train and was able to watch Homeland no problem and download a couple of different episodes at fast speed (and hd!) On Friday I used nearly 1gb between netflix and play music.
On Saturday I tried a bit in note 2014 and I still had 1% if the 2gb allowance.
Today still in note 2014 I downloaded about 500mb between netflix and play music to try. The counter is still saying I used 1% of my 2gb and saying I used some data for netflix this morning. I haven't been charged anywhere else so it is fairly safe to say that it is working in a different tablet.
I was thinking that because the Samsung A is an unbranded tablet, nowhere it says it's Optus and I had to manually download apps. What a bargain, I will probably sell mine, as note 2014 is a much better tablet and can be connected to tv if we go away. Also free unlimited sms, if this could be put in a phone it would be an ideal teens plans.(I am not going to try as no interested in that, but I reckon it would probably)

    • Thanks for reporting back!

I might get it and sell the tablet then :)

      • Hi, still using in my note 2014. The messages are not included though, I thought they were as it says unlimited however they are not.

    • @fozzie,
When you wrote "downloaded", did you mean downloading Netflix content via 4G for later offline viewing?
      If yes, it was unmetered?

      • +1

Yes thats correct, you can also download via 4g and is unmetered :)

  • just notice there's a $2 account fee on my bill which I find pretty sneaky. Has anyone noticed the same thing? Is there any way to stop this ?

    • +1

sounds like a $2 fee for a paper bill? you should be able to turn it off when you login to optus online or something

      • yeah indeed thanks mate. I actually turned it off when setting up the account though, probably need to give these guys a call.

  • Never bought tablet from mobile provider before, is this network locked by any chance? Do they do this with tablet?

  • All for use in Australia. Fair Go Policy applies. Stream SD video up to 1.5Mbps

    Sorry killed it for me
