  • $500 off a 2.5grand laptop ;)

  • You beat me to the post ;).

But now the question to the wise Ozb community - how good is this deal?

  • I got the same coupon, so appears to be generic.

    • Same here.

For slightly less money there are actually quite many choices if you're looking for the exact same specs. Though honestly $2k for a U cpu isn't worth it IMO.

    • What other ones are good?

      • HP ENVY 13 x360,
        HP ENVY 15,
        Asus UX330UA,
        Asus X541U,
        Dell Inspiration 13,
        Acer E5,

        Etc etc…

A few that I mentioned have multiple screen configurations as well and can range from 1080p to 4k.

Especially when you can get a Xiaomi 13 for under $1K. Unless you NEED 4K and i7.

The build quality is beyond compare. It has Infinity Display, which means a smaller form factor, making it lighter and more portable.

It is not cheap, but you're paying a premium because it's more upmarket than a Xiaomi or Inspiron.

        • The build quality of XPS' is horrible though, so many horror stories.

Good thing is Dell warranty is not bad, but that'd be the same for the Inspiron line.

        • @clse945111: The XPS series usually come with ProSupport which is leagues better than any warranty I've ever come across in the tech industry.

  • I got the 'exclusive' coupon too

Just bought this for $1749 from Dell outlet, another deal posted a couple of weeks ago.

Beware of QHD screens on a 13" laptop though - I myself got one of those 4K Asus convertibles from a deal some time ago, and if I have a chance, I'd definitely go for the 1080p version instead. There is hardly any discernable difference to my eyes at least. Things look vaguely sharper. Who would bother downloading a 4K video onto an SSD though? They are gigantic. Plus the battery life takes a significant hit. Plus Windows has shitty support for HD. Sometimes an application sends a window the same size as my thumb, with all menus crammed into a corner. It's just too much trouble for a visual improvement, yet most of those scenarios where the improvements matter shouldn't be performed on an ultrabook anyways. Just my 2 cents.

I have 1440p on 14" and would swap to a 1080p display in a heart beat.
Windows scaling sucks and on a 14" display anything over 1080 is a waste.
I am a resolution whore, would change my tune if the scaling wasn't so poor.
For now would rather have a display that is easier to see and easier for the GPU to driver with less power.

        I am a resolution whore …

Scaling, by definition, reduces effective resolution from native resolution - at 2x scaling, any bitmap of size x*y, will be drawn at 2x*2y=4(x*y) - so, you're using 4 times pixels to draw same bitmap.

For now would rather have a display that is easier to see …

The whole point of high DPI is to increase (vector) rendering quality, particularly for fonts, so, no, it won't be "easier to see" at lower DPI.

        • I think you've totally misunderstood me and/or misunderstand how scaling is supposed to work.
Totally different to 'pixel doubling', it doesn't just increase the size of everything, just uses bigger fonts etc to increase readability.
It's broken in Win10, in some case so badly that some menus go missing etc..
Works great in Win7 on our HTPC, easier to read from the couch whilst maintaining res for movies and photos.

        • @virtual81:
Sounds like you either need to read more carefully or understand the different affect scaling has on bitmaps (raster) and vector rendering.

        • @AlexF:

No idea what you're trying to say.
All i know is with scaling in Windows enabled video and images are not effected, just UI elements.

Would you like to clearly state what the issue is?
Is it with the term scaling being used wrongly?
If so then i agree with you, but i'm just calling it what Windows calls it.
          You're not making any sense.

The lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 460 is similar to this.
The Yoga has 6th gen instead of 7th gen i7 (not much difference).
Thinkpad has Nvidia GTX940 graphics (much better than this)
Thinkpad has full wacom digitizer (including rechargeable stylus with internal storage) with vs the plain touchscreen in this.
Thinkpad also has the 2x2 mimo WiFi, not sure about this one, but 2x2 isn't exactly mainstream yet, nice to have.
Thinkpad also has a more sane resolution, 2560x1440 usually, though occasionally you can get hands on a 1080p version which i'd prefer (1080p in a 14" display is plenty and windows 10 scaling sucks)

All up the Yoga often specials for under $1500
It's usually the middle one at this link..
    http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/professional/thinkpad-y…
The i5 is also excellent value, no real difference between i5 and i7 CPU's, bit of an intel con, they're all dual core with HT and restricted to the same thermal envelope when in a notebook.

Won't vote neg, just offering some info on a great value alternative, not a real apples/apples comparison either.

  • windows 10 scaling sucks < somehow everyone is saying this. Has the windows 10 creators update fix it?

    • +1

I'm still downloading it, but from what I've seen so far, improved scaling hasn't been highlighted so I won't hold my breath for it. The update window itself looks blurry af which makes it even less likely. Will update once I finished installing.

    • +2

Windows 10 is not the problem but rather some of the applications which don't properly support scaling. It is up to the developers to implement scaling properly.

    • i have updated my imac bootcamp … frozen a few times in 2 hours :(

    • +2

I don't use any screens that require me to use higher DPIs, but the Creators Update does have some improvements with regards to scaling: https://blogs.windows.com/buildingapps/2017/04/04/high-dpi-s…

    • With the exception of some GUIs and fonts, it's fine. And I'm not on creator's update.

  • Decent price. How much are they when ebay does a 20% off? Do they normally have a few hundred off on top of the 20%?
