1620

Thought this may deserve its own post. You can get Saints Row 2 free @ GOG for PC. For those with Saints Row games in their Steam library you can claim them at GOG Connect. See here
Here's the spiel:

About: Saints Row 2 brings true freedom to open-world gaming. Players can play as who they want, how they want, and with whomever they want in this sequel to the much acclaimed and tremendously successful Saints Row.
Set years after the original, the player finds himself in a Stilwater both familiar and strange and challenged with bringing the Saints back as the rightful kings of Stilwater and bringing vengeance to those who wronged him.

Limitless Customization - Play as fully customizable characters that are male, female or something in between. Vehicles can be visually customized as well as performance tuned. Cribs and even gangs all have an amazing degree of detailed customization options.
Multiplayer - Co-op full story campaign has seamless integration (for example one player drives while the other shoots). Competitive MP pushes the boundaries of immersion in a living Stillwater environment fully populated with police, innocent bystanders and rival gangs.
Killer Combat and Awesome Vehicles - Planes, helicopters, motorcycles, boats and cars can be piloted and used as weapons. On the ground new combat options include melee, fine aim, and human shield.
Freedom to Explore - More missions, activities, diversions, races, weapons, vehicles, cribs, city districts, and interiors than ever before. Over 40 story missions with additional bonus missions take place in a transformed Stilwater that is over 50% larger than before.

Awesome game! Probably one of my favourite co-op games of all time. I really wished that they stayed with the serious storyline and occasional funny tone of the 2nd, it got really cringey and over the top by the 3rd and 4th games.

    thanks OP!

God damn this game was the shit in the day. One of the first things I got for my PS3, used to play it all the time with the ex, before we got GTA IV online up and running.

  • +1

    The best of its series.

  • Saints Row 2 is one of the best sandbox games, totally loved it.

If you are buying this make sure to download Gentleman of the Row mod. It will improve performance by a lot considering the PC port for this was trash.

Easily one of the most fun co-op experiences I've had. The gameplay and the campaign was designed for it, it's amazing and I'll never forget my time with it (and friends).

The optimisation for the PC version on the other hand.. not so great. Occasional hitching and the odd crash is to be expected and you'll never get amazing fps on even the very latest PC. The Gentlemen Of The Row mod (available from here - http://idolninja.com/sr2.php) somewhat helped me with performance when I had my playthrough, but it still wasn't anything praise-worthy.

Honestly, in the end it speaks a lot to the quality of the gameplay that I'd put up with all the performance nonsense and play it all the way through. If you have the patience there's a very rewarding (co-op) experience to be had.

  • Is there any way to transfer this over to Steam? GoG client won't even work on my computer, some bullshit about a runtime dll file not found.

    • +5

No there isn't. But you also don't need to use the GoG client. Just download the game files and install them. DRM free! If that doesn't work, a Steam version won't either because it's the same version of the game.

I just checked the steam page and it's apparently free for a limited time. I don't know if this means you get to keep the game after that limited time or it's yours forever if you pick it up now.

      • +2

Once you click install. The game is added to your library and its yours forever. Even if the game is removed and no longer available for purchase on steam. It will always be available to you if its still in your Steam library.

What's the point of this when you already have it in your Steam library? Seems stupid.

    • +10

      Because it's DRM free.

      • -2

So? You already own the game. I just don't see the point of this when I can just log on to Steam and download the game to any computer I want.

        • +12

It's for people who don't want their game tied to a service. This way you actually properly own the game.

          @BTRaynes:

Right, that makes sense now. Thanks!

          @BTRaynes:

You never own a game. You always only have a license to use the game. That license can technically be revoked by the licensor.

        • @BT Raynes:

To the people who negged this: you can do this all you want but it still does not change the facts. Funny how some people don't like to hear the obvious truth. Maybe read a whole software license once. Neg away. ;-)

        • @Lysander: But does it matter? What are they going to do, hack into your computer and delete it off your hard drive?

        • @steelpanther:

Of course not. But here people often state they want to support developers - if those developers chose to exercise their rights that should respected.
Also, hacking is not necessary if it is an online multiplayer game - if the license is invalid and you keep the game and connect online that can be detected and boom you are busted.

None of that practically really matters but saying you own a game is simply wrong as that is going against what the developers and publishers gave/granted you.

Anyway, have a nice evening and a nice weekend.

        • @Lysander: You're right of course, subject to the specific clauses in the license. And it's also by this mechanism that pirating software isn't stealing - it's copyright infringement… Once again, subject to the terms of the license.

        • @airzone:

Correct. At the moment piracy is a civil wrong only, not a criminal one as often portrayed in the media.

is this game 10 years old?

  • +8

It is free on steam for a limited time too http://store.steampowered.com/app/9480/

  • If anyone is getting this, you're definitely going to want a controller to play it, I played it back in the day and any time you get into a car the game is unplayable with a kb/m. The only reason I didn't get to play it more than a couple hours.

  • Excellent! I get a free copy of Saints Row 2 plus I get a drm-free version of Saints Row 3.
