  • Tivo external Harddrives are rip offs just like xbox external harddrives. They should make it easy to use a normal WD hard drive.

    • That is why you buy a different TV box with a drive that you can change yourself or use any external storage with.

Anyway I thought that the Tivo drive was just a WD drive?

      • It's apparently 'special'.

"Because the drive inside is a WD hard drive engineered specifically for the audio/video market, this system stays cool even in a hot entertainment center, runs quietly, and, most importantly, delivers optimized streaming for smooth video playback."

        • That just means it's an AV type drive. More likely they have some coding on the enclosures board which makes it the only one to work.

You can put a bigger drive inside the Tivo. It's not as simple as pop out the old and pop in the new, but can be done.

Yeah, but you void your warranty by doing that, and setting up the internal drive is a pain in the arse, especially if you've had your TiVo for a while and need to transfer all your data onto the new one.

I'd much rather just plug the external drive in and keep the warranty.

About time. Should be the permanent price.

Good price - installed a new hard drive myself previously but if the external drive had been $140 at that time, would have just bought one to save myself the hassle. Nice work.

  • Thanks for posting this - I've been watching them on eBay and they all sell for more than this - Cheers

    This is a good deal.

A normal WD 1GB drive goes for $72 (MSY) but an "AV" rated drive is $132 (MSY) by itself. Add an external case for say $30 and you couldn't build your own for the price TiVo are charging.

I've been waiting for a deal like this for a while.

    • I got an external 2.5" case for 11$ ….

      • Just because this is a pet peeve of mine…

$ symbols go in front of values :) $11

  • This is a great price. I spent $4 more than this just 2 weeks ago (to buy and ship) a 1TB WD AV drive which I used to upgrade a 160GB TiVo. If this deal was out then I would have just purchased this add-on.

  • I warn you all..
I have 3 Tivos.. 1 blows up so they take it back after three weeks of back and forward and send me out a second hand scratched replacement, well all it does is turn off all the time and turn on. I call them and they say can not be faulty. Blah Blah Blah so I call a guy who advertises that he fixes tivos..
He put a Drive Into see if it was the drive problem and it just turns off and on then he puts the original back and says fight them and send it back. Now they say warranty is void because there server noticed a different drive had been in it..
So be aware before you play. Or Get a whole different system.
As Tivo company are rude and useless..

I've had a TiVo for a couple of years now and have been very happy with it.

Try sending an email to Robbee "robbee (at) hybridtv.com.au" outlining your issue. She should be able to help. Be nice :).

      • Chris. Thank you for your Help.. I will do that…

  • I guess you can't PM at OW since this is a coupon offer….

  • Good deal for those who didn't qualify for the free expander deal
