  • Games I was not that interested in playing - but for that price why not?

Star Fox Zero is just ok… the controls suck. Nintendo really dropped the ball.

      • +9

They didn't so much as drop the ball as they did pelt the ball at its audience's feet as hard as they possibly could. Same with Metroid.

People told them as soon as the first footage was revealed "Hey, I'm worried about the motion controls and the slow gyrocopter sections" and Nintendo said "Eyyy don't worry about it.", and then they rang up Platinum Game's C Team and said "Lol are you done with Legend of Korra yet cuz we wanna make a bad Starfox game and know Platinum has no experience with shooters but we're giving you this anyway, then we can conveniently blame you when scores are bad lol ty here's a copy of Lylat Wars, make this but bad kthxbai"

        Ye I'm mad.

          Hahaha, +1 for the description.

I love the visuals and all, but god, the game sucks so bad!! I remember getting up to the bit where you battle 1 on 1 with pigma, then gave up cause the controls suck so bad.

Give me an n64 controller anyday over this motion-control bs

        • @montorola: As much as I agree with you, I'm not sure the 64 controller was totally innocent either.

"and know Platinum has no experience with shooters"

Never heard of Vanquish? One of the best shooters of the last generation.

        • @DoomsDave: Gah, oh dang, I forgot about Vanquish lol. I always felt like they re-used a lot of Vanquish's assets for Wonderful 101 lol.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: that reminds me - I have Vanquish for PS3 - still shrinkwrapped…

  • Both now sold out :(

6 Star Fox and 2 Animal Crossing at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast, none of anything at Helensvale.

    • Animal crossing is behind the counter, not actually out.

  • Awww original Star Wing on Super Nintendo as a kid was the best! Lol

I wonder if people have played Star Fox Zero? Instead of slamming a game, go and play it. It's awkward at first, then the controls become easier to master. Fantastic game, not the best in the series but a whole lot of fun!

AC Amiibo Festival, this is about right in terms of price. Could have been a great game.

    • Havent played Animal Crossing since the Gamecube days. Even then, I really wondered what the fuss was about.

      • Not much has changed since GC days. The game nails the freedom you have and impressive AI (characters grow with you). You feel like you're in a town with personality with so much variety, people get addicted to that.

        • Except for Amiibo festival, which is just MarioParty with no minigames and monopoly with no hotels. And it literally has Amiibo in the title so you know what they intention was when they made it. Animal Crossing games are so charming and beautiful, and definitely the most relaxing videogame on the market, yet still has enough challenge and addictive mechanics to keep you coming back. Amiibo Festival and Furniture Who Gives A Crap are disappointments to the franchise because they exist solely for monetary gain from dedicated fans, as I'm nearly positive the phone game coming later this year will be too.

I've played Star Fox Zero, and I have to side with the people dissing it. The gyrocopter sections (Especially the toxic planet) are totally flow-breaking and awkward, the controls straight up don't work, and some levels suffer from major inconsistencies.

However, the Star Wolf fights are absolutely fantastic, and is the point where the controls really work FOR the game. The score and graphics are as polished and on point as ever.

All in all, it's not as insulting as what Ninty did to Metroid last year though lol.

        • @FrankMcFuzz:

Regarding SFZ, I had no issues with the controls when I learned how to use it. It has a learning curve, but it's awkward at first.

The problem I found with amiibo Festival is that they tried to sell it at a high price point, even with the Amiibo included.

The game seemed like a demo to me. I enjoyed it with a second player as I had the Amiibo and cards. There's several mini-games. The reviews slammed it for exactly what it is, which is deserved.

But, its appeal doesn't live long. It should have been a free game, so $9 is about right.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: Absolutely nailed that description of both games. Overpriced, underworked on. Both games were an insult to their franchises with SFZ at least being slightly redeemable.

        • @scarecrow1990:

Way to go insulting the developers. SFZ was in dev for about 8 years! And it was a great game. Not to mention you got Guard as well in the LE!

          Overpriced? Only AC was.

AC's purpose was for Amiibo, and at best functioned as it did. But it had far too little content at that price. Still enjoyable, but short lived.

        • -1

          @justmiike:

SFZ was in dev for about 8 years

With all respect, if it was in development for that long, they should've gotten it right.

Legend of Zelda BOTW has been in development for 5years and they nailed it.

Apart from that, one of the standout games for me in terms of fun has been Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze.

        • @montorola:

I agree, but SFZ had a small dev team (hence the time), nothing like Zelda.

DKTF is the most underrated Wii U game to date, never got the recognition it deserved.

        • +1

@justmiike: DKTF is the most underrated? Sorry, Wonderful 101 is still a thing :O

I think most of the weirdness of SFZ comes from using Platinum as a dev (who doesn't make shooting games) and forcing them to make a motion sensitive game (which isn't their strong suit). The whole thing was, mathematically, stacked against the project from the beginning.

          As for DKTF, it's absolutely fantastic but even that is a little less fantastic than DKCR on the Wii. Mostly, I just want to know what Nintendo has had Retro Studios working on for THREE YEARS NOW and we still haven't heard a thing. C'mon guys, I need to know ;_;

        • +1

          @FrankMcFuzz:

I forgot about Wonderful 101! I'll agree with you there, since it's such a unique and colourful title.

I would like to know too, it's not good enough for a dev who has had an amazing track record!

        • @justmiike: Platinum has multiple teams; the biggest and most famous team is directed by the amazing Hideki Kamiya. But he was busy working with his A team on the (now cancelled) ScaleBound exclusive Xbone title, so he was not working on Star Fox Zeroes.

Platinum has been in Nintendo's eyes since the popularity of Bayonette, however I don't think Nintendo understands that Platinum has a very specific genre they excel at. Regardless of your opinion of Zeros, it's pretty evident that it was a bad move to call in a hack'n'slash dev team to work on what was primarily a shooter… With… weird Gyrocopter stealth sections in an action on-rails game…

        • +1

@justmiike: 8 years and they served up a pile of steaming crap. Guard was better than SFZ. AC was a kick in the balls to people that support Nintendo, what a joke that 'game' was.

    • +1

I wonder if people have played Star Fox Zero? Instead of slamming a game, go and play it.

My kids like it, but they only play it once in a while…

    • -1

Starfox was always a tiny bit overrated, but SFZ was great. Aiming system makes sense for what the series was based on initially. Flight/sim dogfight games.

Amiibo Festival is very good for what it is, but it needs the cards to play the arcade style games. Without 3-6 cards and an amiibo, you need the other few things to access part of the game. The original bundle had most of that stuff. All of it is cheap, why they're charging less for the disc only version.

      • +1

Spot on, I really wished amiibo Festival was a full blown game. Multiple boards and double the mini-games, I would have been absolutely loving it! But, there's always Mario Party 10 for that which is a blast multiplayer!

        • -2

Problem is it was only shown briefly and not explained, it isn't just a board game, its more of a Animal Crossing version of "Nintendoland". It actually was a clever arcade influenced NFC game, with a board game as one of the bigger games.

The boards were customizable, basically designed to be changed by the player. The "seasons" work as different "boards" with different events.

It does have constant "events" / "festivals" which are sort of like minigames with more of a sim game twist.

I think if it was actually marketed and explained, it could have done a bit better. It was influenced by the main game alot.

If it was on the Nintendo Switch it probably would have had better marketing. Wii U marketing was quite bad and non existent at times.

      • -1

Aiming system makes sense for what the series was based on initially. Flight/sim dogfight games.

I get what they were trying to do, but in reality it was a complete PITA having to look at the TV, then suddenly look down at the gamepad and quickly regain focus on what you're trying to do.

The whole back and forth thing from the TV to the gamepad is what annoyed me the most. At the end of a hard days work, I want to just sit down with a controller in my hand and play - I don't want to be stressing my neck back and forth or putting up with silly motion controls to have fun.

This is where games like Donkey Kong and Mario shine - they are simply just easy to pick up and play.

        • -3

Nah, honestly it was fine. There were far more involved 2 screen games in other Wii U titles that required you to twist and focus on 2 screens far more.

Individuals had no problem with double screens with other systems like DS, 3DS, it became a "problem" with Wii U due to console wars and gamer insecurity. Same with simple motion controls, which work fine.

The tutorial/training areas were designed well also and basic. You get used to it within a reasonably small amount of time. Individuals should just admit they're not good or honestly just being narrow minded.

Maybe some gamer individuals should just stick to simple games on Xbox/Playstation that focus more on copy/paste controls, cutscenes, cgi and story mocap then actual gameplay if its an issue, it ain't really hard to adjust at all, i go from my Xbox to this quite easily.

If a game has too much gameplay, is more immersive and creative and that becomes a problem for the stereotypical internet gamer crowd, then I think gamers should maybe just watch a movie. Video games are for kids and these Nintendo ones were made accessible for them.

If you're getting a bit older maybe or having trouble with certain games, or just dont have the time, maybe its time to stop playing. Not every game should have copy paste me too controllers or a insta-win control scheme set. Participation trophy type a stuff is lame. Angry gamers types will spend ridiculous amounts of time to learn mediocre Dark Souls input stuff and patterns but wont give stuff like this the time for shallow reasons.

Then again, SF had a training wheels mode for those that werent that good, i would add.

        • @BNN:

Individuals had no problem with double screens with other systems like DS, 3DS

That's different because the screens are directly under one another, all you have to do is move your eyes or it's there in your peripheral vision. It's not like you're craning your neck back and forth between the TV and down between your hands.

it became a "problem" with Wii U due to console wars and gamer insecurity

LOL. I don't see how it has anything to do with "gamer insecurity" or "console wars"?

Individuals should just admit they're not good or honestly just being narrow minded.
Maybe some gamer individuals should just stick to simple games.
If you're getting a bit older maybe or having trouble with certain games, or just dont have the time, maybe its time to stop playing.

Mate, your whole post reeks of elitism. Simply because the vast majority of Wii-U gamers dislike the control scheme in SFZ you take it personally and suggest it's a problem with everyone else?

It's got nothing to do with insecurity, console wars, or being narrow minded. The control scheme just sucks, plain and simple.

Conclusion: There is a reason why the game is now selling for $9.

          Q.E.D.

        • -3

@montorola: Relax, just keeping it real. Its selling at 9 because the Wii U is discontinued and not available in alot of places. The system is still getting games but its over at retail and the Switch is the focus.

The 2 screens honestly wasnt that different, this has alot to do with the insecurity and attitude towards certain companies from gamer types (mostly on xbox, ps and insecure nintendo ones looking to fit in with messageboard angry gamers on the other two).

No elitism in what i wrote, just truth which will be lost on "gamers" that have that hive gamer mentality, games are not that important either way.
If this was something that ps/xbox came up with first, it would be a different story.

Vast majority? Spoke to regular irl Nintendo types in the real and they had no problem with it, they actually use motion controls/screens like regular folk and arent elitist, its just the angry stereotypical internet core gamer minority who lap up clickbait and fake controversy. Which was thrown at the game and system at the time. Kids seem to be able to play the game with relative ease. It also received decent ratings from players on eshops from what i remember. So given most dont vote id still say most appreciated it.

Complaints from individuals that just not very good at games anymore and need excuses to be honest. The snowflake mentality with core gamers that need a copy/paste schemes to play has simplified gaming to basic movies and repetitive genres with poor gameplay.

I play Xbox most but i dont pretend i need that control scheme constantly to fit in with "gamers", its immature, insecure and sad to be honest.

The SF game and its genre always had different types of controls.

Maybe just stick to casual open world games that do the same thing constantly with controls and interfaces, or maybe just play some mo cap obsessed stories disguised as video games.

If Xbox fans can pick it up and play no issues, anybody should be able to.

The Blu Ray game Rogue One is great right now, you put it in the blu ray drive, you hit the play icon, so immersive. GOTY contender. 10/10.
You might also like Netflix, its one of the best games at the moment. The Stranger Things level is hard but once you find the other chapters its easy, it practically plays itself. : )

        • @BNN:

It's laughable how hard you're trying to defend it (paragraphs and paragraphs - guess I hit a soft spot).

If anything, I think it's you who is the insecure gamer here. Your comment history on ozbargain is pretty much 100% on video-games lol

        • -3

@montorola: Hey Relax, video games not that important, I dont take them seriously, no need to get offended. You don't need to respond to comments, its all good, i just state the case.
Im not posting with emotion, I just point out the truth regarding gamers and topics. Its a hobby for kids either way.

I think I commented on some other things, alot of game deals come up for whatever reason on Ozbargain. There seems to be alot which is suprising.

But i generally can predict what gamer types will say about certain games/deals and there usually just regurgitating clickbait or message board junk and falsehoods. Very far removed from average joe game fans. Lol.

Its a bargain website, and we always get the gamer messageboards types commenting, and we dont need too much of the angry gamer jibber jabber talk. Average Video game fans, families looking for present ideas and the non stereotypical "gamer" minority can comment too. This is for everyday people looking for deals. So chill.

  • Sold out at Forest Hill :(

  • -4

Star Fox Zero is cool. Controls fine, tutorials explanatory. Rumors about the game were fake news angry nerdom perpetuated. Mostly insecure gamer types looking to fit with the internet gamer crowd (mostly xbox, ps console warriors) crying about controls. I like my Xbox controller but not every game systems needs the same clone controller. Those that are terrible at anything that isn't a copy paste dualshock/duke are admittedly just terrible at games, especially with slightly different controls. Alot of depth to the game too. Also Insecure Nintendo types looking to fit in too. Real talk.

If kids can understand it, aging still gamer types could. Lol. Good to see the Nintendo company try new things.

Amiibo Festival is a decent spinoff game, but without the card/peripherals the more creative games cant be played. Not as good as Mario Party 10.

Angry nerd types complain about these games but they're fun. I guess it reminds them that games are for kids and that makes them mad.

Definitely some strong exclusives on the Nintendo, Xbox platforms. Looking forward to Crackdown 3 and Arms. 1 2 Switch is good for a game that gets angries off the couch or playing outside the house.

  • sold out highpoint.. damn it!

  • +8

A big thank you to the staff member at eastland target for keeping aside one of the 5 copies the guy in front of me was buying. A big "get stuffed" to the guy that had a stack of 10 games and didnt have the common decency to offer 1 copy of starfox even when i pointed at the shelf and said "dam no more starfox games…my son will be disappointed". Be nice to each other people. No bargain is worth being heartless to one another.

    • +1

So did he take one from the guys pile and give it to you?

      • +4

Its a bit of a long story but basically i asked at the counter before he got there and the guy got the disk from the back for me. So the staff member thought, well, this guy has sort of got in for 1 copy before the other guy. He told the other guy he only had 4 copies not 5 and kept one aside for me. I thought that was a pretty nice thing for him to do, he didnt have to. I dont blame the other guy for wanting to make a $$, but gees. Don't let greed get in the way of being a decent person…i only wanted 1 game of his stack of 10…its just greed…

        • +2

Ahh glad to hear that outcome!

Yeah they really should limit it to 3 max per person to save it for the other people.

  • +1

7 copies of Amiibo Festival left at Elizabeth, SA if anyone is interested. Price is listed as $64, but scans at $9.

  • still like 5 copies of starfox left at Tweed City.
Didn't look or take note of the Animal crossing one sorry.

  • +1

Great deal on SFox but I'll pass, only because I know it will just get added to the 'pile'. Will leave it for someone who will actually get to enjoy it.

  • About 5 of each in stock at Grafton NSW

  • Both Starfox and Animal Crossing are gone at Melbourne CBD.

  • +1

Anyone who wants animal crossing - it is on clearance at the gamesmen

    https://www.gamesmen.com.au/wiiu-animal-crossing-amiibo-fest…

also just out of interest - i saw guitar hero live at my local target last week for the wii u for $15

    • +3

It's also available at EB Games as part of their 2 for $20 sale.

  • Are these games any good?

    • Plenty of reviews online for both - choose a source you trust. I've not played either.

      • And I don't think you'd want to play either lol.

If you haven't played donkey kong tropical freeze, try it, brilliant game!

  • Animal crossing trades in for $15 at JBHIFI

  • The limited edition is $50 @ Target that edition contains Starfox Guard in Disc format.
That is the only way to physically buy a copy of Starfox Guard. Other territories got a download code.

  • How long does target usually take for click and collect?

    • Depends on how the order is fulfilled.
If a store has sold out or does not have the facilities to fulfill a click and collect order, they are then sent from their Melbourne warehouse to your chosen store. It can then take up to 10 working days to arrive once it has been dispatched.

  • They got a few of the Amiibo boxed sets for $9
About 4 left at Vic Park

  • Some jerk came into my local target and bought them all in one batch.
    Clearly a ebayer taking advantage.

  • Plenty of Amiibo Festivals at Doncaster Shoppingtown. Unlike the idiot that bought out all the copies at Eastland, i only bought one. Because you know…im not a greedy DH.

  • Picked up a copy of Starfox Zero at Mackay Target on Thursday. Still 4 copies left. No Animal crossing left

  • +1

I picked one up for the poster above but they bought one. So I have a star fox if someone wants it.

  • Picked Animal Crossing up at Target at Elizabeth, Adelaide but it was the last copy. No sign of Star Fox there though. Also saw Animal Crossing at Mawson Lakes but oddly there wasn't a clearance sticker for it so it was marked at the usual price. Might be able to talk them down though if other stores are doing clearance.

    • Price sticker or not will still scan lower in the system.
My target had all there copies of The last guardian sill at $47 I think and it's actually only like 29 or something similar. Scanned to check because I thought it was wrong and I was right. dunno why they didn't mark them down though they still had like 8 left on the shelf.
