Motorola Moto G5 Plus (16GB, 3GB Ram, Grey) - $322.20 @ The Good Guys eBay

861
C5AUS

Great price for a newly released phone. From my research the 32GB/4GB ram version, along with gold colour, will only be available direct from Motorola initially.

Over the G4 Plus the G5 Plus has NFC, and hopefully a longer update period.
Biggest reasons to get a Moto for me are as close to stock android as possible (without having to afford a pixel), and going back to buying a non grey import at an affordable price. Also no problems with bands etc.

I didn't want to have to root a Xiaomi phone to get a better ROM, as this would stop NFC being useful for android pay etc.

Downsides are the low internal memory, and average RAM. Plus overall a good camera but with not fantastic low light performance (although i don't think anything does unless you spend $800) Finally it still uses MicroUSB rather than USB C. It does come with a Moto quick charger though.

16GB is a bummer though. Yes you can add an SD card, but internal memory is more reliable, faster etc.

    • +15

16GB is such a joke for a phone in 2017.

      • +1

yeah this. For $300+ you expect 32gb. Its also hard to take given many sub $200 china phones have already gone to 3gb/32gb rom as standard.

      • What's the issue? It's a cheap phone so not a heap of memory but you can throw in micro SD. Problem solved

      • -1

check the android tv boxes …… most are 1gb ram and 8gb rom ……. and have s912 which is a current processor ….. they also have 2gb ram and 16gb rom options but few people will pay the extra $17..for more memory……. and the sd card will read 4 k video fine speed wise if you buy fast cards ……

how often have people found that they have a problem and run out of ram on 2gb ?

buy yes 16gb rom is a bit lean …… though with android 7 the memory card extends your internal memeory rather than appearing as a separate volume ..that can't be used for apps ….. so add 128 gb card and for apps …… it looks like a 144gb phone.

        • Can you suggest a card which can work close to the internal storage? I don't have any good experience so far. Never consider a phone with 16 GB no matter how new it is. Can anyone suggest anything to change my mind? Really appreciate any input.

        • +1

sandisk extreme , not their slower ultra (U1) or ultraplus (U1). The extreme is a U3, and has min 60mbs write speed and it's the write speed that determines how quick pictures are saved…… all cards are good on read, it's the write speed that's important.

Sandisk don't promote the write speed of the ultra or ultra plus on their web site they are so slow

          https://www.sandisk.com.au/home/memory-cards

Really notice it on 24 megapixel cameras.

The U1 cards are rated as min 10mbits ……avoid…….slow cards is why there are so many complaints from gopro owners.

          But the sandisk extreme.

      • Not if SD is adoptable.

      • Agree. Should cost less for 16gig.

    • Don't flame me bro, but how do you know this is the 16Gb version? I looked at the ebay link and couldn't see any specifications :/ I've no doubt it was the lower specced version, just couldn't see it on the page anywehere.

    • Moto SD memory is adoptable with Marshmallow onwards. If you don't know what that means then stop writing this rubbish. If you do know what it means, why are you writing this rubbish?

    • Yeah internal memory is so important nowadays. Learnt my lesson after my huawei. Even with sd card, many apps cannot be transfered over so my phone is so limited as apps are so important nowadays.

      • +1

With android 7 you don't transfer them over. You put the SD card in and tell it to use it as internal memory. Then it doesn't differentiate.

  • +1

Bought one, should be available for pickup tomorrow! Looking forward to finally replacing my Moto g2.

  • Does this version have LTE 700 Mhz Band 28?

  • this is finally a viable option for a better camera versus the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X (which is $100 cheaper but at least has 32GB internal storage).

    • +1

you can add memory, but you can't change the camera. With Android 7 you can store apps in the memory card, couldn't do it with android 5 so when you ran out of internal memeroy you could not load more apps which was a killer on 16GB …… nolonger problem with android 7 …. you can load apps and run onto the memory card.

    • The Moto g has few other advantages such as replaceable battery, performance is better (guess faster internal storage), and fast charging.

  • Is it worth waiting for the upgraded 32GB/4GB versions to hit retail?

Want to have a play with in it store before committing to purchase

My other half needs a new phone in the next few weeks

    • +9

      I'd say yes.

But then I am a completely random non-authoritative anonymous source on the internet - so it must be true!

    • You can get the 32GB/4GB model from Motorola but at $449
      https://store.motorola.com.au/product/moto-g5-plus/

      • Too close to the moto z play price.

    • I had thought about it, but for the G4 plus the 32gb version it never hit retail except for Mobileciti.
Although it may eventually be cheaper there, the combination of the Good Guys 15% and eBay 5% means it might be a while before the difference is only $50 again.

I would have totally got the 32GB/4GB version (mainly for the RAM, although the space would have been nice) had the difference stayed at $50.

    • Yes, it's a great investment for the long run and hopefully will have faster for longer.

      • +2

I'd agree for a smaller difference, but when its almost $130 I can upgrade the phone 6 months sooner and still be ahead on price once I sell second hand.

  • Two questions-
    * OTG?

    • Fingerprint sensor?
    • +1

Yes and yes. I think USB OTG is part of the USB standards but I could be incorrect on that.

      • Thanks.
        ;)

    • +1

It does have a fingerprint sensor.

      • Thanks.
        :)

        • +1

Just a tip for the bullet points, be sure to leave a space before you start them.

          E.g:
          Eneloop
          Space here

only thing i hate about this phone are the big ass bezels, looks like an s3

  • Tempting… But after getting burnt by Lenovo/Motorola when my Moto G3 was denied a 2nd major update (like the G1 and G2 got), I think I'll wait and see what the new Nokia Android phones are like…

    • the new Nokia 6's are SnapDragon 430. Low end chipsets..

  • -2

    No dual sim :(

    • Yep, has dual sim. Both Nano Sim, 1 is 4G and 1 is 3G. On the standard G5 1 is 4G and one is 2G, but with an eventual software update should be 3G as well.

      • You mean this one is dual sim? or there is another model with dual sim?

        • +1

Both the Moto G5 Plus (both ram versions) and the Moto G5 are dual sim.

        • +1

          @kulprit:

          ok. thks

  • -2

I don't think the G5 plus has NFC. All reviews I read are saying the phone lacks NFC.
Motorola US also shows no NFC.
    https://www.motorola.com/us/products/moto-g-plus

  • If it wasn't for the 16Gb I would be all over this

Currently using a Huawei P8. Nice phone but the 16Gb is a PITA

  • How close does this compare to an S7?
I have a Moto G3 which is ok for a budget phone but is coming to an end performance wise.
Was thinking of an S7 but maybe one of these will do the job.
Really wanting NFC for android pay since it doesn't look like the Huawei watch rumours of it having an NFC chip are likely to be true.

  • +2

I have G4 plus 32gb overall I'm satisfied with it but the ear piece speaker is average and it took me while to accept that and I didn't like moto interface so I changed to Asus. Before that I had an Asus ZenFone 2 64gb which is still running perfectly except for the 2nd SIM 2g no longer supported.

The other day I had to resolve my dad's extremely slow Samsung S5 - I couldn't believe how bad it was and he doesn't have extra downloaded personal apps. What a pain that was. A whole bunch of bloatware that can only be disabled and not removed. Performance did improve but still annoying that there's so much useless crap slowing it down.

  • -4

taking a risk with boot loops … you could get Lg G5 for similar price as the Moto G5 Plus (with ebay coupon etc)

  • Prices have gone back to retail!
    $299 and $399!

    • +1

Crazy that they'd change the price back on eBay.

Still available for $339.15 direct on Good Guys if you are interested.

      • They just took that off as well lul :/

        • Yep, sure did. :(

        • @kulprit:

          Yep, sure did. :(

My mother rang her local store as she was ordering the G5 and the store denied they were ever reduced or part of this sale and wouldn't sell for that price.

The email clearly states 15% off all Motorola phones except those already reduced which these are not.

They claimed that the G5 is new and would not be reduced.

      • +1

Rang my local TGG asked for $339 price no worries.. OzB you've dun it agin <G >

  • It's over already?!

    • +1

      It's over already?!

      Only on eBay.

  • "I didn't want to have to root a Xiaomi phone to get a better ROM, as this would stop NFC being useful for android pay etc."

    What does that mean?

    • +1

if u root, NFC stops working

      • Oh, didn't know that. Bummer for rooters- no problem for me.

        • +4

NFC keeps working, just android pay stops working. Part of the security measures, as once rooted it would be possible for other people to collect that data.

        • +1

          @kulprit:

I believe there are apps that can hide root status from android pay

  • I just bought a mi5. Hasn't even come yet. Damn it.

    • Same here but i think the Mi5 is a better phone IMO

      • +1

Better phone but lack of local warranty makes it a bit of a gamble. My previous redmi note 3 survived a year without issue before being stolen so hopefully the mi5 will prove itself reliable too

  • Can it do VR?

  • +2

That was frustrating. I was in The Good Guys, Moto G5 Plus in hand, showing them their web site saying $339. The salesman got me to refresh the page and it went to $399! …. No sale. :(

  • +1

Picked mine up earlier today. No dramas. Sucks that they ended the deal, but pretty glad that I got in before they did! It looks quite nice

  • Ozbargainers..any ideas on how to still get this deal or are all stores denying it?

    • +1

Ozbargainers..any ideas on how to still get this deal or are all stores denying it?

Send them a complaint via their website and all the ACCC to complain regarding their deceptive advertising. Take a screen shot of their website showing 15% off all full priced Motorola phones.

      • I'm sure they aren't the first one who did this..like jack up the price then advertise a sale (I know apparently its illegal)..surely there is some loophole for vendors to get around it for them to keep doing it?

  • strange why some say 3GB Ram and others say 4GB if you check the specs on GSMarena.com - is it based on the country where the phone is sold? and also JBHifi selling the 3GB ram version for $399 right now on their website.

    • +3

2 version in Australia. The 16GB/3GB version, and 32GB/4GB version. The storage space and RAM are the only differences. RRP difference is $50 which means the 4GB is worth it usually. But that version so far is only available from Moto direct which means it won't go on sale. Same with the gold colour.

Retail will only be receiving the Grey 16GB/3gb version from what I have read. Of course this will probably change and Mobileciti did get the G4 Plus better version.

  • +1

Sigh…probably better luck waiting for the next g5 plus deal

  • +3

Just got mine! What a great phone for the price!

Great screen, love the hardware button and gestures, runs Hearthstone very well.

    Feels high quality to me.

Alot better then my Nextbit Robin with the Snapdragon 808.

3GB RAM feels very adequate to me.
