Would it be possible to use this product as a wired 'dumb' 2-way intercom between rooms of a home? I realise it would be overkill considering the features this has, but is this possible? I also am aware this can be done wirelessly with today's DECT phones.

    • Not unless you are willing to set up a computer as a PBX (VOIP server).

      • OK, thanks.

      • Not unless you are willing to set up a computer as a PBX (VOIP server).

Asterisk (Free) running on Raspberry Pi (about $95 for the whole set-up).

        • Don't forget the fiddling time. Asterisk has more options than a Swiss Army Knife.

Grandad, please tell me, what is a corded telephone?

Grandad, please tell me, what is a corded telephone?

A phone that used to work in an emergency before the Turnbull government gave us a third world telephone system to match our internet and education systems.

      • Oh, I think its way below third world standards!!!!

        • I think you haven't been to many third world countries?

        • +4

Oh, I think its way below third world standards!!!!

You're probably right given the rest of the world is going fibre to the premises and Australia is "leading" the way back to the 1960's.

Look at Romania and what they have achieved with a strong telecommunications network.

          https://qz.com/763630/one-of-the-poorest-countries-in-the-eu…

In Estonia I had a 50/50 connection in my hotel room! And it was full speed all the time. In Russia for US $9 you get 100/100 fibre in St Petersburg and Moscow and some other large cities. US $32 gets you a gigabit fibre and this is all unlimited. In the remote areas you get a 8/8 connection for US $6.

Turnbull has put the knife into Australia's back, there's no way Australia can catch up now. In the next ten years most of the NBN will need to be replaced but the NBN Co will have been sold off to private interests so the costs of replacing large parts of the network will see our internet costs double or triple from what they are now.

        • @Maverick-au: Even though Romania is one of the poorest in the EU it's not a third world country, neither is Estonia, I agree Australia is far behind a lot of the world when it comes to telecommunication, but it's also girt by sea which makes it less competitive for decent telcos to want to invest in our sunburnt country. My experience with real third world countries is I would rather have bad internet than water that is 100x worse than Flint Michigan.

Grandad, please tell me, what is a corded telephone?

A phone that doesn't bombard you 24-hours-a-day with damaging microwaves.

They required no separate power supply, so if the power went down, you could still make a phone call. They relied on no rechargeable batteries to function, nor required a battery to function as a back-up.

Rechargeable batteries need to be disposed of after some years because they no longer hold suitable charge. At this point, most users would just toss their old phones into the e-waste pile and buy a new one because electronics is so cheap. But there are so many other costs we don't see. We are at peak levels of e-waste despite all the propaganda about 'caring for the environment' that corporations and governments spew forth. Often this environmental propaganda is used as a tool to steal more from you. Like global warming & solar scams siphoning off billions from you while restricting your rights and blinding you from your off-grid sustainable instincts. These scams are designed to keep you reigned in rather than free. Reigned in paying the highest cost of electricity on the planet, for example. Some sunny places have outlawed sustainability as we speak.

The financial fraud (and subsequent waste) has reached epidemic proportions. If we go back far enough, we see it all starts with the debt-slave monetary model that demands more and more debt and wasteful consumption and widening inequality. It's time for you to change it. I'll expire before I see it, but I'm counting on you, grasshopper.

      Regards,
      Granddad.

        @cheepwun
Fantastic rant Grandad, with sharp insight and attitude that made me feel better. Comment of the day to you.
I was going to ask you what a pay phone is, but I'll save that for after you've shown me how to make a go-cart

      • Here's one, reproduction 1970's rotary telephone. No batteries or external power source required. haha. Not sure if it will work on the NBN though, maybe, maybe not.

Grandad, please tell me, what is a corded telephone?

Something I used to strangle your grandma, son.

  • Is it possible to make this unit "wireless" or "hands free"? I need to replace my VOIP phones, but not really a fan of the Siemens Gigaset for price vs quality/usability.

I had a <5mins Google and it wasn't immediately apparent.

    • Well it can be a speakerphone according the feature list above, is that what you mean?

    • Sangoma (the owner and developer of Asterisk) has some phones.

  • Also looking for a deal on a cordless set too but not too keen on DIY solutions.

  • Anyone know of something exactly like this but with WiFi as well as, or instead of, the Ethernet ports?

    • +1

Check out the Cisco spa525g phones, they have both bluetooth and wifi settings. They're an older model now and support ceased last year as the new series it out but these are perfect anad you can usually pick up second hand ones cheap from ebay, gumtree etc.

      • Thanks! Will check it out.

  • Does his also work on an old school telephone line/account?

  • Mine was delivered today but it's a dud.
The LCD backlight is on but it's completely blank so can't access the menu or identify the soft keys to set it up.
    Anyone got theirs to work?

  • Hi philo. Im trying to call you mate but your contact number is disconnected.

send me a contact number via email asap so we can sort this out as it might be the contrast .

    cheers

    • Sorry about the disconnected number, recently moved to Mal's Mishmash and didn't bother porting landline.
Thanks for your call and for the arranging a replacement so promptly.

      • Brilliant service from GadgetCity, he immediately sent a replacement (which has just been delivered) after checking it first and even managed to post it that afternoon despite the late hour.

Anyone can offer bargains but it's how disputes are handled that separates a trustworthy quality merchant from the others, well done!

Now for the fun of setting it up with my VoIP accounts.

  • Phone easy to set up with my two accounts.
Good selection of ring tones and good high ring volume that can be easily heard when outside.
    Phone has a quality feel.
    Rapt with the purchase!

    • A ringing endorsement then.
